4 THE FUTURE OF MOTORSPORT The FIA Formula 3 European Championship has established itself as one of the leading junior categories in international single-seater racing and for a few years now is considered a most important rung on the ladder to Formula 1 4 THE SERIES

5 The championship offers drivers the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on an international level. The 10 events in 2017 will be held in eight different European countries, with appearances in Great Britain, Italy, France, Hungary, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Austria. The venues chosen each year prepare the drivers as much as possible for the pinnacle of motorsport, and for this reason nine former or current Formula 1 GP or test circuits have made it onto the calendar this season: Silverstone (GBR), Monza (ITA), Pau (FRA), Hungaroring (HUN), Spa-Francorchamps (BEL), Zandvoort (NLD), the Nürburgring (DEU), Red Bull Ring (AUT) and Hockenheim (DEU). Furthermore, besides Pau, the series will visit a second tradition-steeped street circuit: Nuremberg s Norisring (DEU). On six weekends, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship will race in the support programme of DTM. Three of the other four events are held in the support programmes of FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCC), the Blancpain Endurance Series and the FIA European Touring Car Cup (ETCC) and in the Grand Prix de Pau, Formula 3 represents the main attraction. ON TRACK EXPERIENCE Similar to 2016, each event will see the drivers competing in three races, with two scheduled for Saturday and one held Sunday morning. The length of all races in 2017 will be 33 minutes plus one lap. Also similar to 2016 each race meeting will begin on Friday, with two 40 minute back-to-back practice sessions, followed by the first of two 20 minute qualifying sessions. The first qualifying defines the order of the grid of race one. The grids for races two and three will both be defined in qualifying two which is held on Saturday afternoon. The grid for the second race will be drawn up in the order of the fastest time and the grid for race three will be drawn up in the order of the second fastest time achieved by each driver in this session. The event concept has the benefit of offering drivers plenty of time behind the wheel of their single-seaters. TECHNICAL SKILLS One of Formula 3 s greatest strengths, compared to other junior categories, is the detailed work the drivers must carry out with their engineers. The technical and sporting regulations which govern the sport have been developed in correlation to the learning aspect of Formula 3. The championship is not contested with control chassis and control engines, which means the drivers are offered the chance of enhancing their cars in cooperation with the technical staff of their teams within the framework of the regulations. Thus drivers are improving their technical background knowledge and gaining the experience required for moving up the single-seater ladder. MOVING UP THE SINGLE-SEATER LADDER And the concept works. For decades now Formula 3 has prepared drivers to move to the top of the pyramid-shaped structure the FIA has put in place. Currently 15 of the 20 drivers on the grid of the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship have gained experience in Formula 3. Seven of those drivers Daniil Kvyat, Felipe Nasr, Carlos Sainz, Max Verstappen, Pascal Wehrlein, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll have graduated to the pinnacle of motorsport via the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in just the last five years. And with junior drivers from Ferrari (Guanyu Zhou), BMW (Joel Eriksson) and Force India (Nikita Mazepin and Jehan Daruvala) on the 2017 grid, a few more names will surely be added in the future. But the career path following Formula 3 does not exclusively lead to Formula 1. Tom Blomqvist, Pascal Wehrlein, Lucas Auer and Jamie Green continued their careers in DTM after having successfully competed in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Other drivers who shone in Formula 3, such as Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer, Loïc Duval and Tom Kristensen made a name for themselves in international endurance racing: winning the legendary Le Mans 24-hour race and securing the World Endurance Drivers Championship (WEC). THE UPCOMING SEASON The 2016 season promises to be an exciting one. The quality of the team and driver entries in 2016 is of a very high standard. Young talents from many different countries are competing for the trophy of drivers champion, while nine of them will also try to claim the title of best rookie. The teams on the other hand will battle it out for the coveted team title. THE SERIES 5

6 QUALITY OF EVENTS AND STANDARDS The FIA Formula 3 European Championship is a first-class product which is shown by the professional setting that surrounds the series. The DTM as one of the host events represents motor racing at the highest level and an event for the entire family. Nearly no other sport provides similarly high entertainment values for the visitors over three days. Such a backdrop makes for impressive TV pictures and attracts major interest of potential partners. DTM stands for accessible motor racing. Often, they even actively support young drivers competing in the series. As DTM is settled for the future through the commitment of minimum the three car manufacturers involved and their wish to be present all over Europe, a unique consistency of the calendar is guaranteed. In 2017 the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) visits three continents with nine races in the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Mexico, USA, Japan, China and Bahrain. As well as being an exciting and fiercely fought competition, the FIA WEC is a superb showcase of motorsport technology. The action takes place on some of the finest circuits in the world, including the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours race. The FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) has been thrilling across four continents. The FIA WTCC features cars based on well-known, everyday production models, and is renowned for its spectacular, bumper-to-bumper races that are often not decided until the chequered flag. Its motto is Real Cars. Real Racing. In 2017 the Blancpain GT Series has races in eight European countries and provides an attractive platform for ambitious racers. The production-based FIA GT3 sports cars ensure spectacular entertainment for the spectators, both with their looks and their sound. The FIA Formula 3 European Championship will top the bill at one of the most traditional Formula 3 events: the highly popular Grand Prix de Pau which stars the notoriously challenging street circuit in southwest France. In 2017 it is guaranteed to have host events that attract many spectators and media representatives and which have professional marketing concepts behind. In any direction, such host events operate on the highest safety level, therefore only famous and FIA homologated race tracks will be used. Keep in the date and adress In 2016, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship is support series of the DTM, the FIA WTCC and ETCC as well as the Blancpain GT Series and main attraction of the Grand Prix de Pau. Please find attached the dates on page 9 of this booklet. Further information to all tracks are listed on our website 2. Dress for the weather As always, we hope for sunshine but anyway scattered showers are possible. Please pack the following: rainshelters, sun screen, binoculars and ear protection (these you are able to buy onsite). 3. Memorize background information On the official website there is enough information investigating the pilots and the bolids in order to boast with insider facts in a talk shop. 4. Arrive in time The racing days start on saturday and sunday at 9:00 am and end expectedly between 6:00 and 6:30 pm. Due to the higher traffic volume traffic jams arround the racing circuits can t be avoided completely. 5. Find the place easily Use your GPS or print out the route optimally at the start of your journey! All racing circuits are optimally signposted in their close environment. 6. Abandon on snacks You don t have to worry about your creature comforts. Of course, in the FIA Formula 3 Team Lounge there is a sufficient offer prepared for no cost. Everyone who doesn t want to dispense with the classical snacks is able to buy delicious food which are sold in the kiosks on the racing circuits. 7. 12 THE HISTORY OF FORMULA 3 In 1946 Charles and John Cooper developed the first F3 cars for an entry-level formula in Bristol (Great Britain). They had 500 cc bike engines with around 45 hp and a top speed of 160 to 180 km/h. In Germany a similar entry-level formula with 750 cc engines (Zündapp, BMW) and uncountable self-designed cars was established. Originally those cars were called Minimal Race Cars. They were used to stage a championship from 1948 till In 1964 Formula Junior was taken over by a new 1000 cc single-seater class, called Formula 3 by the FIA. It spread in whole Europe. The most successful brands were Lotus, Brabham and Cooper. In 1975, the FIA initiated the European Formula 3 Championship for the first time. This series lasted until Afterwards the European Formula 3 Cup was declared the successor of that championship and was carried out as an annual single event until 2004 except for a nine-year break from 1991 to The first German F3 championship took place in 1950, but the series had to be ceased in 1954 because of a lack of events. In 1957, race driver and journalist Count Giovanni Lurani initiated Formula Junior in Italy, with up to 100 hp strong 1100 cc engines. The German Formula Junior Championship was held from 1960 till 1963 and was dominated by Gerhard Mitter and Kurt Ahrens Jr. This championship also included hill climbing. With the Polifac Trophy a national F3 race series was reanimated in Germany in The German Race Car Championship was organised as a national Formula 3 Championship in Germany for the first time in It built up an international reputation in junior motorsports till THE HISTORY

13 From 1985 the championship was open to international drivers as well. Since 2003 the German championship has been called Formula 3 Cup. On one hand the Formula 3 Euro Series continued the idea of an European Formula 3 championship, and on the other hand because of the merger of the French and German national F3 championships it became the successor of these two race series. In 2011 the FIA organised the FIA Formula 3 International Trophy with races all over the world. The trophy has been replaced by the FIA European Formula 3 Championship in In addition to these championships further F3 events took place. The prestigious races in Zandvoort and Macau are two of them. A higher-ranking series was founded in 2003: the Formula 3 Euro Series. There are further national series in other countries worldwide, e.g. Spanish and British Formula 3. Japanese Formula 3 is considered the strongest Formula 3 series outside of Europe. In 2013 the FIA created a championship governed by a new set of sporting regulations. The FIA Formula 3 European Championship consists of events on both F1 circuits and others closely linked to the history of F3. THE HISTORY 13
