4 Report of Principal and School Improvement Council What an exciting year it was for the students, parents, and staff members at Ocean Bay Elementary during Nothing could be more exciting for the Carolina Forest community than opening a new school. Ocean Bay Elementary was built to help with overcrowding at Carolina Forest Elementary. Our adventure began when a committee of parents and community leaders met to discuss the naming of the new school, selection of the mascot, and school colors. Meetings were also held at neighborhood community buildings to begin a Parent Teacher Organization. All students and parents were kept abreast of progress through the first school newspaper, The Bay Breeze. After input from students and parents, Ocean Bay was selected as our name and the dolphin was voted as the mascot. School colors are yellow and blue. A scrapbook was kept for all to see the progress of the construction of OBE that opened its doors on August 27th for its first annual Open House. We are proud to be a part of such a wonderful community school with a rich heritage of parental involvement and community support. More than 700 students and over 70 teachers and staff now call OBE home. At OBE, our highly qualified staff has high expectations for themselves as well as for the students. Meeting the unique physical, social, emotional, and academic needs of every child is a top priority. Teachers engaged in the use of Northwest Evaluation Association s Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). Student strengths and weaknesses were identified and charted throughout the year. This information was used to help students reach their maximum potential. Identified students were provided after-school remediation and highly intensive small-group instruction during the school day. Goals for the school year included a focus on literacy, stressing comprehension strategies and integration of literacy in all content areas, writing across the curriculum, and enhancing instruction through the use of technology. Curriculum coaches provided intense staff development, classroom observations with feedback, and modeling for teachers. Personal and social responsibilities were emphasized through guidance lessons and school-wide character education stressing "Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be Ready." OBE benefited from a very active PTO, volunteer program, business partners and parents. The PTO provided funding to support classroom and literacy room libraries, the climbing wall in the multipurpose room, student academic planners, numerous rewards for the students, and classroom playground equipment. The PTO sponsored many successful activities, such as Spring Fling, Mother/Son Dinner and Magic Show, Father/Daughter Dance, and Holiday Bazaar. Our family atmosphere reinforces that we firmly believe that "Children Come First."
