1 driver V O L. 1 2 D E C E M B E R BMW M Roadster to Debut in Detroit Exclusive M design features distinguish the new M Roadster from the standard Z4 Roadster. ONE OF THE FASTEST ROAD-GOING BMWS EVER BUILT WILL MAKE its world debut next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Based on the enhanced BMW Z4 Roadster, the M Roadster is powered by BMW M s award-winning, 3.2-liter in-line six-cylinder engine. In 2005, this engine was voted Engine of the Year by an international jury a record fifth consecutive time. As in the BMW M3, the 3,246 cc engine features dual overhead cams, double-vanos variable valve timing, and six individual throttle plates. The normally aspirated powerplant generates more than 100 hp per liter, translating to 0-60 mph in less than five seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. The second-generation M Roadster comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The M Roadster features the speed-sensitive variable M differential lock that is standard equipment on the M3. It provides outstanding stability and traction, particularly when accelerating out of corners. The M differential lock enables the driver to fully experience the benefits of rear-wheel drive. Under challenging conditions such as a different adhesion coefficient on each side of the car, often the case in wet or slippery weather, the system contributes to a remarkable level of traction and stability. The Z4 Roadster and, by extension, the M Roadster, was designed from the outset for maximum chassis stiffness. At 14,500 Nm/degree of static torsional stiffness, this is the most rigid bodyshell in its class. In addition to delivering impressive agility, this also means that the Z4 Roadster provides superior occupant protection. 2 Mroadster five stars, a remarkable accomplishment for an open two-seater. In those same evaluations, the Z4 Roadster scored points for head-on collisions and 16 points for side-on collisions, both of a possible 16, the best results ever for a roadster. The awardwinning 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine from the M3 powers the new M Roadster. 2 These ratings earned the Z4 Roadster the EuroNCAP Best-in-Class Award. With the best test results in its segment, the Z4 Roadster offers better passenger protection than many fixed-roof automobiles. The M Roadster benefits from the latest developments in BMW s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system to provide the utmost in active safety. Emergency braking capability is maximized by features such as Brake Drying, which works to keep the brakes dry in wet conditions, and Brake Standby, which immediately positions the brake pads nearer the discs whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal quickly in anticipation of an immediate move for the brakes. Emergency braking is further enhanced by automatic Brake Fade Compensation, which helps to maximize brake pressure and stopping ability whenever the brakes get hot. Smooth starts and stops are facilitated by Start-Off Assistant, which holds the brakes briefly on a hill after the brake pedal is released in order to prevent the car from rolling back, and Soft Stop, which allows for smooth stops every time. M interior touches include the steering wheel, shift knob, door sills and instrumentation.

3 Mroadster The DSC system in the M Roadster is designed to take full advantage of the capabilities of the M differential lock. To further enhance its braking capabilities, the new M Roadster uses BMW M s floating compound high-performance braking system originally developed for the M3 CSL and included in the optional M3 Competition Package. With weight-saving aluminum hubs and steel crossdrilled discs, the system minimizes the risk of warping under hard use. The M Roadster uses a hydraulic power steering assist system tailored to its high-performance capability. The M Roadster distinguishes itself from the Z4 Roadster with its front air dam with air inlets to cool the front brakes, the oil cooler and the engine. The latest M car features exclusive double-spoke design 18-inch alloy wheels. And last, but certainly not least, the rear of the M Roadster incorporates a horizontal diffuser and the four round tailpipes that have become a hallmark of BMW M design. Distinctive M touches continue in the interior. As on other BMW M cars, the white-on-black instruments include red indicator needles accentuated by white illumination. The tachometer features an engine speed band; the yellow prewarning field and the red warning field show the safe operating range of the engine as a function of temperature. As the engine oil temperature increases, the suggested speed range increases, making it easier for the driver to know when it is safe to use full-throttle. Other interior elements are also upgraded for the M Roadster, including the steering wheel, gearshift knob and door sills. M Roadsters will be built exclusively at BMW s U.S. manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, S.C. Full U.S. specifications will be available shortly before the world debut in January. Mbriefing in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) under the new S2 class rules. The cars will race on Yokohama tires. In 2001, BMW s last full season in the series, M3s entered by PTG and BMW Motorsport dominated the GT class, winning the Manufacturer, Team and Driver titles. The five BMW Team PTG M3s that combined to win 17 of 25 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series GT class races over the last two seasons have been sold to two private teams that will continue to race them in that series. PTG will provide technical support for these cars and BMW of North America will enhance its privateer contingency program to support the effort. In 2005, BMW awarded more than $70,000 to private BMW racing teams in the Rolex Sports Car and Grand-Am Cup Series. BMW Team PTG will name its drivers shortly and begin testing the new ALMS M3s in January. The Rolex Sports Car Series begins its 14-race season on January 28 with the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway, and the American Le Mans Series starts its 10-race season at the 12 Hours of Sebring (Florida) on March 18. 4 Mpower BMW Finishes Second in Rolex Series BMW TEAM PTG CONCLUDED ITS SECOND season of Rolex Sports Car Series GT class competition on October 9 with a win in the VIR 400 at Virginia International Raceway. The victory was the seventh of the year for the BMW of North America-supported team, bringing the tally of Rolex Series wins for the BMW M3 to a remarkable 17 of 25 races since With 10 top-three and 16 top-10 finishes, the eight BMW Team PTG drivers took BMW to second in the Manufacturers Championship. Five M3 drivers finished among the top-10 in the BMW finished second in the 2005 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series GT Class Manufacturers Championship. Drivers Championship. Co-driving to four wins, Joey Hand finished fourth, Tom Milner, Justin Marks and Bill Auberlen were sixth through eighth, respectively. Milner and Marks each scored three wins and Auberlen, the 2004 GT Driver Champion, stood on the top step of the podium twice. Ian James, with one victory, finished 10th. Overall, in 10 years of North American sports car racing, BMW Team PTG has won 53 of 108 races entered and added 14 championship trophies to BMW NA s display cases. 4

5 Mpower M5 History: A Compelling Example of BMW Magic BMW MOTORSPORT, NOW BMW M, WAS FOUNDED IN 1972 TO operate the company s racing programs and to claim a share of the rapidly growing tuner and specialty manufacturer market. To accomplish the latter, engineers and technicians at Munich s high-performance subsidiary worked their magic on BMW production models. The 5 Series-based M5 has always been the most compelling example of that magic because it s one thing to transform a coupe into an apex-strafer but quite another to do the same to a four-door luxury sedan. In the U.S., where it was sold as a 1988 model (of the 2,180 examples built 1,250 were sent here), it earned the nickname Black Bart because it was only available in black with tan upholstery. More than a few enthusiasts personally imported European versions because of their 30 hp advantage over the pollution-controlled American model. The M88 engine powered the first-generation M5. 6

The M5 Touring (891 built) that became a European cult car was not sold in North America. The E34 has the distinction of being the only M5 to win a major racing title thanks to David Donohue and Randy Pobst winning the IMSA Supercar Championship in 1994 and 1995, respectively.
