1 Volume 16, Issue 10 October 1st, 2017 Targa Newfoundland September 15th - 22nd, 2018 St. John s, Newfoundland, Canada Writer: Darren Sheppard Targa Newfoundland Newsletter Targa Newfoundland A Review Prologue The 16th annual Targa Newfoundland kicked off Sunday, September 10th, with 33 teams officially entered in what turned out to be an exciting five days of competition. A strong field representing seven countries took on the Ironman of Motorsports tarmac rally, which covered over 1,600 kms through the Avalon, Bonavista, and Burin Peninsulas on the island of Newfoundland. Garden Cove, North Harbour, North West Brook, and Hodges Cove. Competition vehicles at the Car Show/Community BBQ in Bauline at conclusion of Prologue - photo by Jonathon Murphy-Lee. Several last minute entries from local competitors made a couple of the divisions increase in size, hence creating more competition. Josh Collins of Placentia, who competes in national, regional, and local stock car series and in the NASCAR Pinty s Series, entered along with his navigator Matt Collins, in the Open division of Targa Targa Bambina winner of Marystown Andrew Warren also entered as a navigator of a 2015 Factory Five Racing 33 Hotrod, driven and owned by Albertan Daniel Bernhard. They entered in the non-competitive Fast Tour division and aimed to just enjoy the experience of the Targa. Prologue stages in the beautiful towns of Flatrock and Bauline were successful for teams, with no incidents reported and all crews returning to the paddock in the early evening. Many locals took in the car shows at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay and at the Bauline Community Centre and Flatrock Community Centre, respectively. The event moved its overnight base to Clarenville for Monday, September 11th, at the Eastlink Events Centre, with a majority of the action taking place on the northern Burin Peninsula. Stages were scheduled for Black River, Leg 1 Heavy rain and high winds welcomed the competitors to the first competitive stages of the Targa. The challenging conditions played havoc with the teams as they tried to battle it out for the early leads in their classes and divisions. The Classic division had a tie for first place at the end of Leg 1, with the 1965 Ford Mustang of Americans Jack Rogers and C.J. Strupp sharing the lead with Canadians Bryan Bursey and Martin Cadieux. Leg 1 Classic Division leaders Jack Rogers & C.J. Strupp - photo by Jonathon Murphy-Lee. The Modern division also had several teams tied for first, but the biggest story out of that division was the fan favourite entry of Stan Hartling and Andy Proudfoot, a
2 2006 Lotus Exige, had transmission issues and was forced to retire from the event. The team was extremely disappointed in having to retire on the first day of competition. In Open division, another Lotus and teammate of Stan, the 2005 Lotus Elise of American brothers Scott and Mark Knott, had a major engine issue and were also forced to retire from the event, at least in that Lotus. By Wednesday, the brothers had used their Lotus as a parts car and had gotten Stan s Lotus working again. The brothers than ran that Lotus the remaining three days of competition, but were not in contention for Targa plates or podium finishes. In Grand Touring division, the top entries are starting to separate themselves from the pack, with four teams tied for first after the first timed stages. They hoped to continue the separation on Leg 2 of the Targa, with stages scheduled for Boat Harbour, Petite Forte, Harbour Mille, Grand le Pierre, English Harbour, and Terrenceville on the central part of the Burin Peninsula. Leg 2 It was an exciting second day of competition at the Targa, with the standings starting to take shape as to which teams will be contenders by week s end. With several lengthy stages on Leg 2, several teams were able to utilize their speed and driving skills to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. In Classic division, the tie for first place continued between the teams of Jack Rogers and Bryan Bursey. However, in Modern division, a couple teams started to pull ahead. Targa veterans John Hume Jr. of Ontario and Newfoundlander Justin Crant were tied with rookie Kirk Jones of Ontario and Targa champion Corey Prosser for first place. Third place belonged to Albertans Harold and Denise Vanderschee, who were only one second back. Some of the beautiful scenery the event went through on Leg 2 - photo by Jonathon Murphy-Lee. In Open division, the team of Ontarian Mark Rittenhouse and New Yorker Mark Laitenberger were tied with Newfoundlanders Josh Collins and Matt Collins for the lead, with a sizeable gap to the remaining Open competitors. Grand Touring division had three Hume Media Inc. teammates in the top three positions. John Hume Sr. and Christina Kroner first, Ruth and Andrew Thorogood in second, and Craig MacMullen and David Jenkins in third. The Hume Team is always hard to beat in GT and that was starting to look the same for the remaining three days of competition. The southern Bonavista Peninsula was on the schedule for Leg 3, with stages scheduled for Lethbridge, Brooklyn, Georges Brook, and Burgoyne s Cove. The event would then move onto the Conception Bay North area that evening. Leg 3 Mid-week at Targa usually means changes at the top of the leader board. The 16th annual Targa was no different with veterans leading in each of the four competitive divisions of the event. In Classic division, the tie continues between Jack Roger s team and Bryan Bursey s team for first place. In Modern division, the tie for first continues between John Hume Jr. s team and Kirk Jones team. In Open division Mark Rittenhouse s team had pulled ahead of Josh Collins team by 16 seconds, with the third place team over a minute behind. American father/daughter team of William and Laura Greig - photo by Jonathon Murphy-Lee. In Grand Touring, the second place team heading into Leg 3 had to retire from the event after striking a concrete wall just after the start of the second last stage of
3 the day. Steering issues, putting an end to their Targa. John Hume Sr. s team still held first, with teammate Craig MacMullen s team now holding second, but only two seconds behind Sr. Third place then went to GT rookie brothers Paul and Mark Dennis. Leg 4 stages are scheduled for the communities of Harbour Grace and Carbonear, with four stages in each location. Town stages are very unique and exciting for competitors and fans alike, and should produce even more changes in the leaderboard heading into the final day of competition. Leg 4 A disappointing Thursday with all of the Harbour Grace stages having to be cancelled due to the request of the town council the morning of the event. This resulted in Targa having no choice but to not run both the morning and afternoon stages in the town. The stages in Carbonear ran pretty smoothly, with competitors enjoying the hospitality of the businesses and the town itself. It also allowed for changes on the leader board. Mark Rittenhouse & Mark Laitenberger - Photo by Jonathon MurphyLee. Leg 5 stages scheduled include the John Curran Memorial (Colliers and Conception Harbour), Marysvale, Turks Gut, and Brigus. Leg 5 Friday was the conclusion of the five days of competition for the annual tarmac rally. It was an actionfilled day with lead changes on the last stages in Brigus deciding the winners of classes and divisions. In Classic division, first place went to Jack Rogers and C.J. Strupp of Indiana in their 1965 Ford Mustang. Second place to Bryan Bursey of Texas (but originally from Newfoundland) and Martin Cadieux of Quebec in their 1991 Mazda Miata. Third place went to Michael Wilson of New York and John Stanescu of New Jersey in their 1990 Ford Mustang. Car show in front of the Stone Jug, Carbonear - photo by Jonathon Murphy-Lee. In Classic, Jack Rogers s team pulled out to a 48 second lead over second place team of Bryan Bursey. Heading into one more day of competition, it was a solid lead and only a mechanical issue would allow Bryan to make up the spot in the standings. Modern division is still up for grabs with John Hume Jr. s team leading Kirk Jones team by only two seconds. This battle would go down to the final Brigus stages. In Open division, the gap between first place Mark Rittenhouse s team and Josh Collins team has shrunk to 11 seconds. Another division that will probably be decided on the final Brigus stages of Leg 5. In Grand Touring division, John Hume Sr. s team still leads teammate Craig MacMullen. Penalty times were issued for all GT competitors, but placement of first and second haven t changed. The final stages will certainly be exciting to watch to determine who ll win this division. The famous "Bridge Jump" in Brigus - Photo by Jonathon Murphy-Lee. Modern division was won by John Hume Jr. of Ontario and navigator Justin Crant of Newfoundland and Labrador in their 2004 BMW M3. John and Justin have placed several times on the podium, but it was their first win together in Modern. Second place went to Mike Humphreys and Rahim Kahn of Switzerland in their 2004 Porsche GT3 RS, while third went to Jon Riddell and Briar de Lange of Ontario, another Hume Media Inc. team, in their 2002 BMW M3. Kirk Jones and Corey Prosser had an incident on the first Brigus staged which caused them to miss that stage and the following Brigus stage, knocking them out of contention for the win. In Open division, first place went to Newfoundlanders Josh Collins and Matt Collins in their 1995 Acura Integra. They had trouble with their Subaru just before the event and brought the Acura off of Richard
4 Atkinson the day before Registration. Richard and the Acura won Classic division in last year s Targa, so the car can now add two division titles to its name. Second place went to Mark Rittenhouse of Ontario and Mark Laitenberger of New York in their 2008 Mitsubishi Evo after transmission issues didn t allow them full power over the last stages, allowing Josh to take over the lead. Third place went to Richard Clark and Andrew Prill of the United Kingdom in their 2003 Subaru Impreza. A full list of winners will be provided further into this newsletter. Targa wishes to congratulate all winners and finishers of the 16th annual Targa Newfoundland! Volunteers needed for Bambina & Targa Newfoundland 2018 Targa Newfoundland is looking for volunteers for the 2018 motorsport season. If you d like to help out with the 2nd annual Tom Hollett Memorial Targa Bambina during Canada Day long weekend or the 17th annual Targa Newfoundland in September, please let us know! Depending on the volunteer position, you may have your accommodations, meals, and transportation supplied, plus receive high-quality training specific to the events. Targa also provides volunteer hours for high school students, which require a specific number of volunteer hours to graduate. If dealing with electronics is your thing, then perhaps join one of our Timing Teams. If dealing with logistics and helping people is your thing, then become one of our Competitor Relations Officers. If helping a community prepare for the event is something that interest you, join one of our Set-Up Vehicle teams. Like the idea of seeing the vehicles in action? Then sign up to be a Roving Safety Marshal. These and other positions are available for the Targa. Please Leah Dalton, our Volunteer Coordinator, at volunteer@targanl.com for more information or fill out our Volunteer section on either the Bambina or Targa websites and we ll contact you! It s certainly a great way to see parts of the island, meet new people with similar interest, and it s the closest you ll get to a real rally car in this province! Get information about volunteering sooner than later so you can make arrangements to be here for Bambina and/or Targa! 5 Private transportation from Toronto eastward available for Targa 2018 Scott Robbins (past competitor, 2nd place Classic 2015, 3rd place Open 2014, 3-time Targa plate winner, and master of everything mechanical) has transported dozens of vehicles from the mainland for the last several Targa. Scott will once again be transporting vehicles to and from the event and providing servicing for competitors for the 2018 Targa. Competitors who have used his services have been impressed with the professionalism and the care he and his crew take in bringing vehicles to and from their respective homes. Scott, and his friend Nick Kruczkowski, won the 2016 Service Crew Award for their hard work during the week of Targa. They helped numerous teams with mechanical issues, answered questions, and provided leadership when called upon in the paddock. Scott has access to an enclosed car trailer and a couple of open trailers that he will use to transport vehicles and gear for the event (images below). The price of transport will be determined based on the number of vehicles, which transport option the competitor wishes to use (enclosed or open trailer), and the size of the vehicle itself. He can pick up vehicles from Toronto eastward along the way to St. John s. Vehicles from Western Canada and the U.S. are welcome to join the convoy at any point (Toronto and East). Scott and his crew members can also service vehicles that they transport, or other vehicles that arrive without service crews. He will be bringing an assortment of tools and can work on any and all vehicles. For more information on the cost and other questions, please Scott at srobbi@hotmail.com or call him at
