RAY MATTER The Rays have won nine of their last 10 games, matching their best 10-game stretch of the season (also April and April 18-30) a win tonight would give them their best 11-game stretch since July 13-29, 2014 (10-1) they are a season-high-tying 9 games over.500 (also through games of Aug 26) and they are one shy of matching their high-water mark under fourth-year Manager Kevin Cash (40-30 through games of June 20, 2015) this marks the latest date the Rays have been at least 9 games over.500 since finishing the 2013 season at The Rays have outscored opponents, 54-26, over the last 10 games they have been tied or leading at the end of 79 of 90 innings. The Rays are 14-5 (.737) in their last 19 games they are 17-9 (.654) in August, tied for 5th in the majors and tied for 3rd in the AL, and the 2nd-best winning pct. in August in club history behind 2008 (21-7,.750) they are (.595) since the All-Star break, 6th in the majors and 4th in the AL behind the Red Sox, A s and Indians. The Rays are (.578) since their 4-13 start to the season. This is the third of three consecutive series against division leaders, with the Rays going 4-1 vs. Boston (3-0) and at Atlanta (1-1). WHERE WE STAND At 71-62, the Rays have the same record as the Phillies and a better record than the Nationals, Giants and Angels however, they are 21 GB of the major-league-leading Red Sox in the AL East and 8 GB of the Athletics for the AL s second Wild Card this is the closest they have been to the second Wild Card spot since the end of play on Aug 2 (7.5 GB) and they haven t been within 7 GB since June 1 (28-28). It s worth noting that with 29 games remaining in 2011, the Rays were (.549) and 9.0 GB of the Red Sox in the AL East and 7.5 GB of the Yankees for the AL s lone Wild Card that season, the Yankees went on to win the division and the Rays passed the Red Sox on the final day of the season to clinch the AL Wild Card. For the record, the 2011 Rays and 1995 Reds are the only teams to start 1-8 and make the playoffs, and the 1914 Boston Braves are the only team to start 4-13 and do that three teams have started 3-12 and made the playoffs: 1981 Astros, 1951 Giants and 1914 Braves.
