SETTING THE STAGE After playing its first eight games on the road, Radford will get its chance to return to the friendly confines of RU Baseball Stadium for their home opening series versus Hartford. The three-game series is just three of seven games the Highlanders will play at home in the month of March. The two opponents are no strangers, meeting for a three-game series in Series: Radford leads 3-0 LAST MEETING The Highlanders hosted the Hawks for their opening series in In the three-games, RU outscored Hartford In game one, Matt Hillsinger collected five hits and six RBI, leading RU to a 15-5 victory. Radford used a strong showing from Eddie Butler, who tossed seven shutout innings, striking out six batters Game two saw Matt Mack lead the way with three hits, while driving in one run. Jeff Kemp and Cory Turner finished with one RBI each. In the final game of the series, the Highlander bats caught fire, scoring 22 runs on 22 hits. Having a career day at the plate, Kemp went 4 for 4 with five RBI. Following Kemp s performances, Alex Guerra finished with three hits and four RBI. On the hill, Bobby Bolling allowed only two hits while striking out six batters in six innings pitched. SCOUTING HARTFORD Record: 3-0 Hartford opened the 2016 season with a threegame sweep of North Florida. The sweep gives Hartford its best start to a season since 2000, when the Hawks won their first three contests. The Hawks started the season off with a dominating pitching performance from Kyle Gauthier on Feb. 26, earning 2-1 win over North Florida. Gauthier tossed a complete game, allowing only one run on seven hits and six strikeouts. With the performance, Gauthier was named the America East Pitcher of the Week. HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS Joining Gauthier in the Hawks solid rotation, Brian Murphy threw 7.1 innings in a 3-2 win on Feb. 28. Murphy only allowed one run on five hits. Leading the Hawks offense in the sweep, designated hitter Erik Ostberg finished 6 for 12 with one RBI. First basemen David MacKinnon followed with a five-hit effort. MacKinnon is coming off a strong 2015 season as junior, finishing with a line of.351/.443/.438. He also led the Hawks with 68 hits, 34 runs and 13 doubles. Hartford scored 14 runs in the series with North Florida. Nine of the runs were contributed by Billy Walker, TJ Ward and Chris DelDebbio. The trio finished the weekend with three RBI each. The Hawks saw their bullpen allow only three runs in 9.1 innings, collecting two saves. RADFORD ROUNDUP Record: 1-7 Starting the season with seven games against teams from Georgia, Radford returned home to the New River Valley for an in-state matchup with Virginia Tech on March 1. The Highlanders controlled a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, before the Hokies scored three runs in the ninth and a run in the 10th for a 4-3 comeback victory. In the heartbreaking loss, Tyler Swarmer put together one of his best starts as a Highlander, allowing only two hits over five innings, striking out three batters. Travis McQueen came out of the bullpen, tossing three shutout innings of relief, while striking out five Hokies. Offensively, Danny Hrbek led RU at the plate, finishing 3 for 4 with two doubles. The two extra base hits are the most by a Highlander this season. Hrbek extended his on-base streak to eight games and hitting streak to five games in the loss. The junior second baseman ranks fourth in the Big South with a.464 batting average. Zach York is 1 for 15 since his career day of three hits and three RBI versus Georgia Southern on Feb. 26. RIDGELY EARNS FIRST HONOR After shutting down the Georgia Southern offense on Feb. 27, Zack Ridgely was named The Crons Brand Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week for games played February 22-28, the conference announced Monday. The left-hander allowed only one run on five hits, while striking out a season-high six batters in the complete game. The complete game is the first by a Highlander since 2012, when Eddie Butler went the distance versus Fairleigh Dickinson in a five-hit shutout. In 13.2 innings pitched, Ridgely has totaled 11 strikeouts on the year. The sophomore has compiled a 7.15 strikeouts per nine innings pitched ratio in 19 career appearances for Radford. RADFORD VS. RIGHT/LEFT Radford is 38 for 183 against right-handed pitchers, including 15 RBI Five of Radford s seven home runs have came against right- handed pitchers The Highlanders have not faced many left- handed pitchers to begin the season. RU is just 16 for 74 against southpaws with 9 RBI. HOT HITTING HRBEK Danny Hrbek holds an eight game on base streak while batting 9 for 18 when the bases are empty During Hrbek s on base streak he is batting.464 with a.643 slugging percentage and a.516 on base percentage Herbk leads the Highlanders in doubles and total bases this year. LIGHTNING MCQUEEN In his last 6.2 innings of relief, Travis McQueen has struckout nine batters. McQueen punched out a career-high five batters in the March 1 loss to Virginia Tech. Coming into the 2016 season, McQueen had six career strikeouts. Highlanders... #BigSouthBase

4 JOE RACCUIA Head Coach :: 9th Season at Radford Joe Raccuia, a 1995 Radford graduate, returned to his roots on July 10, 2007 when he was named the fifth head coach in Radford baseball history. Entering his ninth season as the head man for the Highlanders, a Radford uniform has been a winning fit for Raccuia. Throughout his 12 seasons in a Highlander uniform, Raccuia has been apart of 323 total wins as a player ( ), assistant coach (1996) and head coach (2008-present), better than 47 percent of the program s all-time victories dating back to Raccuia s most successful season in a Radford uniform came during an historic 2015 season as the Highlanders finished with a record, setting a new school record in wins. The season also saw the programs first Big South regular season and conference championships, while earning a trip the NCAA Nashville Regional. In the regional, RU went 2-2, including wins over No. 3 Indiana and No. 4 Lipscomb. RU finished Big South play with a 20-4 record, earning Raccuia the Big South Coach of the Year award. Raccuia becomes only the third RU head coach to earn the honor. Including a record six all-conference selections in 2015, 32 of Raccuia s players have earned all-conference honors. The 2015 squad posted a.289/.386/.425 line, while leading the Big South with 122 doubles and 362 RBI. The Highlander bats were led by Big South first-teamers Josh Gardiner and Patrick Marshall. Gardiner narrowly missed the Big South batting title, finishing second with a.368 average, while leading the league with a.451 on-base percentage. Marshall led the conference and set a new RU single-season record with 59 RBI. Big South second team member Hunter Higgerson finished with 25 doubles, leading the Big South and setting a new RU season record. Higgerson finished second behind Marshall in RBI, driving in 53 runs. Shane Johnsonbaugh earned Big South second team honors after leading RU in hits (76), runs scored (50) and walks (38). Radford can attest their 2015 success to their pitching staff and bullpen. The Highlanders finished with a 3.95 ERA, a new single-season record. The Highlanders only allowed 276 runs, their lowest since the 2000 season. Big South First Team member, Ryan Meisinger was named a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award after leading the NCAA in saves with 17. Meisinger finished his career with a 2.60 ERA, a new RU career mark. Michael Boyle earned Big South First Team honors after leading the Big South in wins (10) and finishing second in innings pitched (105.1). With the 10 wins, Boyle became the first Highlander to lead the league in wins, while setting a new RU single-season record. The 2015 senior class concluded their careers with a overall record, the most wins for a four-year class in program history. The group led RU to three consecutive 30-plus win seasons. Getting players to the professional ranks has been a staple for Raccuia during his time as the headman at RU. Raccuia has oversaw 10 players drafted in the MLB First Year Player Draft, with two players signing non-drafted free agent contracts. In 2012, Eddie Butler was the 46th overall selection of the Colorado Rockies in the draft - the highest draft selection in Radford University program history and the first Big South Conference player to be selected in the draft s first round. On June 6, 2014, Butler became the third Radford player to make it to the big leagues with his MLB debut for the Colorado Rockies. Raccuia s success has come both on and off the field of play, including facilities, player development, recruiting and academics. On his watch, two major baseball facilities have opened: the on-campus hitting facility and RU Baseball Stadium. The stadium, which opened on April 8, 2011, became the cornerstone of Radford s program thanks in part to Raccuia s extensive fund-raising and planning efforts. The project went from conception in the Fall of 2010, to completion during the 2011 season as a result of his work. Raccuia also spearheaded the work done to the playing surface and dugouts in time for the 2010 season. All of the improvements to the facilities marked the first major capital upgrades since Raccuia s playing days at RU. On the academic side, the program has earned several honors under Raccuia. The 2008 season saw Alex Gregory collect the second Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in program history. During the Raccuia reign, RU has placed six players on the Big South All-Academic Team and two on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
