2018 Little League All-Stars Player & Parent Information Meeting May 2018
Why are we all here tonight? 1. Get potential players pre-sized for potential uniform purchases Note: getting sized does not mean a player will make an All Star team 2. Provide information to parents and players about the All Stars process Manager selection Player selection Expectations Social Events All Star Tournament info Timelines In the interest of everyone s time, please hold all questions
What exactly is All Stars? All Stars is Little League s post-season competitive tournament program. District tournaments--we are part of District 9 (all divisions) State tournament (all divisions) Regionals tournament (Majors only) Little League World Series Williamsburg, PA (Majors only) This is where our kids compete Unlike the regular season where everyone plays, these tournaments are competitive in nature. Each league puts their very best team on the field every game.
Why is All Stars is so Great? For Players... Intensive practice time with highly skilled teammates Exposure to tournament settings Getting to know new teammates and make friends Keeping busy with friends and positive adult role models Hard work + baseball = FUN! For Parents... Getting to know new families Support your player in new and creative ways Team/family dinners
What are the All Star Teams? One Majors 12-year old Team Can be comprised of 12, 11 and 10 year olds (mostly 12, possibly 11, not likely 10) One 11-year old Team Can be comprised of 11, 10, and 9 year olds (mostly 11, possibly 10, not likely 9) One 10-year old Team Can be comprised of 10, 9 and 8 year olds (mostly 10, possibly 9, not likely 8) Each team can have players on their roster Ages listed are League Age, which may be different than actual age
How are Managers Selected? Majors and Coast regular season managers and coaches are eligible to self-nominate (All Star Manager Commitment Form) Managers can coach down from regular season, but not up Nominees provide information about their qualifications to the SVLL Board at a special manager selection meeting (May 16th) Five minute prepared message Written resume SVLL Board (only) has open discussion following presentations and resume review and then votes by blind ballot, with a simple majority deciding the outcome. President notifies nominees of the results and preparations begin
How are Teams Selected? Parents nominate their child (All Stars Player Commitment form) by Wednesday, May 5pm Managers do any necessary scouting at games and checking in with regular season coaches Teams are drafted one team at a time, with discussion/input from all three All Star managers and facilitation by key SVLL Board members Since teams are drafted, parents do not choose which team they want their child to play on All Star teams will be announced on June 1 SVLL hopes to field 3 All Star Teams - depending on player and manager availability
Who are good candidates for All Stars? Players who... Performed well above average during the regular season Have a reputation for being extremely coachable Can play multiple infield and outfield positions well Keep calm and focused in stressful situations Love baseball, know the rules, and understand strategy of the game Have a positive attitude about anything they are asked to do Demonstrate highest levels of sportsmanship
What s Involved in All Stars? Lots of intensive, focused practice time on and off the field (starts June 1 or 2) Several times a week during school; daily once school ends Players should spend time with each other outside of practice throwing, catching, conditioning Several family social events with individual All Star teams Baseball and Softball players workshop from the Positive Coaching Alliance Online PCA training for parents of All Stars (30 minutes) Online PCA training for Managers (1 hour) Practice Tournaments (Manager option and choice) All Star Tournaments (June 24th-July 20th depending on age group) Regular season events (games, practices, tournaments) take priority over All Stars until the regular season ends. This is true for All Star players and managers.
Attendance and Cost 100% Attendance is expected at practices, workshops and games (except when attending regular season events) An excused absence is 1) a family medical emergency or 2) an absence acknowledged in advance on the All Star Commitment form. Any unexcused absence may result in removal from the team. Cost is $125 and includes practice and team uniform, and All Star tournament play No child will be turned away for financial reasons Pay on Bonzi once instructed ( under Registration) Practice tournaments are not sponsored by SVLL and families cover the cost of those experiences
Paperwork Requirements For players selected to an All Star team, parents/guardians will immediately provide upon request: 1. Original or Certified copy of Birth Certificate and a photocopy (age) 2. School Enrollment Form (easiest address verification) 3. Medical Release Form Birth Certificates and Address verification documents on file from previous All Stars tournaments may be carried forward to this year. Have you moved or changed schools? I ll need a new School Enrollment Form Need new medical release forms each year
All Stars Timeline May/June. Activity Dates Manager Self- Nomination Manager Selection Now thru May 16th (5pm) May 16th Player Self-Nomination Now thru May 23 (5pm) Player Selection May 30th All Star Teams Announced June 1 Positive Coaching Alliance manager & player workshop June 2 (to be confirmed) Practices Begin June 1 or 2 Manager and Team Selection All Star Team Managers are selected by the SVLL Board All Star Players are selected by the All Star Managers, with input from regular season managers SVLL President and Player Agent facilitate All Star team selection No All Star balloting this year--too time consuming for volunteers All Star Managers notify All Star players, regular season Managers notify players not selected this year
All Stars Timeline June/July Activity. Paperwork Social Events Practice Tournament Majors Tournament 11-year old Tournament 10-year old Tournament End of tournament get together Start Dates Early June June, before games begin June, before games begin July 7 Beaver Lake (Sammamish) June 30 Roos Field (Redmond North) June 23 TBA (Falls) After play ends Now for the fun part! League social events: Potluck BBQ for families Team social events: Team dinner & party at someone s home or park (potluck); making banners and player stars ; decorating cars; other family planned team events End of tournament get together: recognize volunteer coaches, team accomplishments, and parent/family support Family involvement is super important and it s really fun!
Practice Tournaments Signing up for a local practice tournament is a Manager s decision No Little League insignia can be displayed (hats, shirts, banners, etc.) This is a Little League International rule. No references to Little League or All Stars are allowed for team name SVLL provides a practice jersey as part of the All Star uniform that can be worn at practice tournaments (no insignia). Families cover tournament costs--not an SVLL sponsored event Great chance to reduce nerves for everyone
All Star Tournament Basics Pool play with 14 All Star teams from WA District 9 Usually one game per day, but there can be doubleheaders Double elimination (two losses and the team exits the tournament) Sportsmanship is vital Zero tolerance with questioning/challenging umpires. Positive cheering for your team and players. No rooting against the other team or booing the umpires. Your guests need to understand these expectations too (siblings, grandparents, etc.) Snoqualmie Valley Little League families have a long tradition of upholding the value of sportsmanship at All Stars! Thank you!
Playing Time in All Star Tournaments Playing Time Rules in All Stars are TOTALLY DIFFERENT than the regular season 1. Kids get most of their playing time at practices--this is the time when all players participate equally. 2. In All Star tournament play, your child is guaranteed one at-bat per game. Depending on team size, you child may get playing time for 6 consecutive outs per game. 3. All Stars is about fielding the best possible team with the best chance of winning. Every team member is crucial, although not everyone will play a lot in games. 4. Your child may be playing new positions for the first time.
Advice for Managing Expectations What s Helpful to Your Child Celebrate making the All Star team. It s a big happy deal! Encourage your player to work hard for the team in practice and games Remind your child that everyone plays and gets better during practices Provide support during the learning curve of a new position A positive attitude from parents goes a long, long way for the whole team And Not-so-Helpful to Your Child... Complaining in front of players or coaches Lobbying managers for more playing time or playing at certain positions Criticism of managers, players, or other parents Complaining in front of your player--about anything or anyone
Other Questions? Is SVLL holding tryouts? No. The regular season is the tryout. How will managers evaluate 8-year olds playing up to AAA? Managers have the option to attend games and/or speak to regular season manager. Why don t players pick the All Stars? 1) It becomes a popularity contest, 2) Too few kids take it seriously and 3) Immensely time consuming for volunteers Can I pick my child s team? No. Managers will make their selection based on having a balanced team with the right skill sets.
Volunteer with SVLL! Parent and Volunteer Pledge I will teach all children to play fair and do their best. I will positively support all managers, coaches and players. I will respect the decisions of the umpires. I will praise a good effort despite the outcome of the game. There are many ways to be more involved in Little League. We d love your help! Managing or Coaching Special Events Committee Member Concessions Fundraising Team Parent
Next Steps Submit your Player Commitment Form (tonight or by May 23rd at 5pm) Get pre-sized for a uniform (tonight) Wait for June 1st. All Star managers will contact players who make the team; regular season managers for those who don t For those selected, begin the Age and Residency paperwork requirements THANK YOU FOR COMING! Jason Watters, President (president@svll.net) Kirby Corder, Player Agent (playeragent@svll.net)
