Central title the Cubs, who have clinched a tie for the division, would clinch the crown outright tonight with either a victory vs. St. Louis or a Milwaukee loss to Cincinnati. The Cubs are vs. the N.L. Central, a.592 winning pct., by far the best intra-divisional record of any N.L. Central team (Brewers are second at 37-34). The Cubs, who reached the NLCS in 2015 and won the World Series last season, are attempting to reach the postseason in three-consecutive campaigns for the first time since ONE MORE TO GO: The Cubs aim to secure their second-consecutive N.L. Central crown to become the first defending World Series champions to win their division the next season since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies, who won the N.L. East by six games the only other defending World Champion to win their division the following season in the last 15 years was the 2002 Arizona Diamondbacks, who won the N.L. West by 2.5 games. Furthermore, the Cubs aim to become the first defending World Champion to even make the playoffs the next season since the 2012 Cardinals secured a Wild Card spot the Cubs aim to snap a four-year drought in which the defending World Series champion failed to qualify for postseason the following year.
