LAST TIME OUT: Behind a strong start from Justin Nicolino and a slew of early runs, the Jacksonville Suns came away with a 6-1 win over the Mississippi Braves on Saturday night at Bragan Field. It was the first game the M-Braves (28-21; 67-52) lost in the series after picking up the first three games, setting them back to a two game deficit in third place in the second half South Division race. Nicolino (11-3) earned his league leading 11th win by firing six shutout innings on six hits and three strikeouts, extending his scoreless streak to 24 innings. Jacksonville (30-19; 66-53) jumped early on M-Braves starter Ryan Weber (5-5). Shortstop Austin Nola doubled to lead off the first and scored when JT Realmuto singled him home. The Suns put up three more in the second. Ryan Rieger doubled and scored on a Nicolino single. Nola singled to put two men on and Realmuto came through again with a two-run double and a 4-0 lead. In the third, Yosmany Guerra hit an 0-2 pitch over the rightfield wall for his first double-a homer, a solo shot to pull away to a 5-0 advantage. Weber suffered the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out one over three innings. Reliever Jorge Reyes allowed an earned run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings, and Ryne Harper pitched a perfect 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Mississippi missed some early chances to jump on Nicolino, putting men at the corners in the first and loading the bases in the second but stranding eight runners in the contest. Jacksonville got another insurance run in the sixth inning. Pinch-hitter Terrence Dayleg singled, Nola doubled for the second time and an Austin Barnes sacrifice line to left scored Dayleg for a 6-0 lead. The Braves got their lone run in the seventh off reliever and Southern Miss product Collin Cargill. Kyle Wren legged out a triple to the right field corner with two outs, and Mycal Jones drove him home with a double down the third base line to make it 6-1. ON THE MOVE: The M-Braves are very active on the base paths this season. With 21 games remaining, the Double-A Braves need just 32 more stolen bases to break the M-Braves record of 159, set in Jose Peraza currently leads the M-Braves with 24 stolen bases since joining the team on June 19. The Braves stole seven (7) bases against Pensacola on July 27--falling two shy of the Braves record (9) which was set on May 1, 2007, at Mobile. JULY LEADERS: Jose Peraza led the M-Braves offensively during the month of July, posting a batting average of.359 in 24 games. Kyle Kubitza led the Braves 21 RBI and 21 walks. Peraza also had a team-high 16 stolen bases. On the mound, Jason Hursh led all Braves starters with a record of 4-1 and a 2.23 ERA in six games, five starts. Brandon Cunniff did not allow a run in eight relief appearances. LEAGUE LEADERS: Kyle Kubitza enters this series with the 10th best batting average in the Southern League,.295. Williams Perez has the fifth-best ERA at Kubitza leads the league in OBP (.408), ranks second in walks (.65) and triples (9) and third in runs scored (63). Cedric Hunter also ranks fourth in slugging percentage (.489). Jose Peraza ranks tied for third in stolen bases (24). Jason Hursh also ranks tied for first in the league with 10 wins. LAST TIME OUT Did not factor in the decision as the Braves and BayBears went to extra innings, tied 3-3. Mobile blasted a three-run homer in the 10th to defeat the Braves. Began the season at Triple-A Gwinnett. Went 1-3 with a 4.72 ERA in 11 games (five starts) at Triple-A Gwinnett. Was 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA as a reliever. Transferred to Double-A Mississippi, 6/2 Atkins did not factor in the decision as the M-Braves plated two runs in the top of the ninth to defeat the Montgomery Biscuits 7-6 at Riverwalk Stadium, 6/3. Tossed six hitless innings before the M-Braves turned to the bullpen in a 14-1 route over Chattanooga at Trustmark Park.
