1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #21 / Road Game #13 Indianapolis Indians (10-10) at Pawtucket Red Sox (8-12) Thursday, April 29, First 6:15 p.m. EDT McCoy Stadium -- Pawtucket, Rhode Island Indians RHP Daniel McCutchen (0-2, ERA w/pit) vs. Red Sox RHP Randor Bierd (2-1, 4.50 ERA) ---- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Daniel McCutchen, will make his first appearance in an Indians uniform during the 2010 season this evening against Pawtucket The right-hander began the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates No. 5 starter, and, after four appearances (three starts) and 18 earned runs allowed in 12.0 IP (13.50 ERA), McCutchen was optioned to Indianapolis on April 25 Prior to the start of the 2010 campaign, the Texas native was rated by Baseball America as having the Best Changeup in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization Last season, McCutchen posted a 13-6 record and 3.47 ERA in 24 starts en route to being named the Indians 2009 MVP McCutchen squared off against the Pawtucket Red Sox once during the 2009 season and tossed 5.0 innings of seven hit, five run ball to earn the win in the Indians 14-7 triumph over the PawSox on May 29 at Victory Field. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose McCutchen in tonight s contest is Randor Bierd, who enters the game with a 2-1 record and a 4.50 ERA In his most recent start on April 24, Bierd was strapped with the loss, despite turning in a 6.0 inning, seven hit, three run performance in the Red Sox 4-2 loss against the Buffalo Bisons Prior to his start on April 24, Bierd had limited opponents to four earned runs in 8.0 IP over two appearances (one start, one relief appearance) In 2009, the right-hander faced the Tribe once and allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits in 0.2 IP out of the bullpen on May 29, which was also the date of the only contest that McCutchen appeared in against the PawSox Bierd split the 2008 season between the Baltimore Orioles and three O s affiliates and posted a 4.91 ERA (20 ER in 36.2 IP) in 29 contests out of the Orioles bullpen. HIGH FIVE: With their 10-9 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon, the Indians have won five consecutive contests for the first time since April 11-15, 2008 During the win streak, Indianapolis has outscored its opponents by a margin, including an 11-6 advantage in the seventh inning or later, with the only runs scored by an opponent after the seventh coming in the Indians 15-inning marathon against the Louisville Bats. HEATING UP: Following his 4-for-4 effort on Wednesday afternoon, INF Neil Walker s on-base streak now stands at eight consecutive games The utility infielder has reached base via a hit in seven of the eight contests and is hitting.389 (14-for-36) with five runs scored, five doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI and five stolen bases during the streak His effort on Wednesday afternoon was the ninth time in his career that he has collected four base knocks in a single contest, while the switch hitter has never posted a five-hit contest in his career. UP TO THE TASK: During the team s five game win streak, the Tribe bullpen has been nothing short of fantastic, posting a 2.13 ERA in 25.1 IP The pen, which has earned two wins and recorded three saves during the streak, has struck out 26 total batters and has only allowed 19 hits and 10 walks Five of the six runs scored against the Tribe bullpen during the team s current five game win streak came in the 15-inning contest against the Louisville Bats Of the eight players to pitch out of the Indians bullpen during the streak, five have held opponents scoreless: Vinnie Chulk (2.0 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 2 SO), Corey Hamman (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 SO), Erik Kratz (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB), Wil Ledezma (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Justin Thomas (4.2, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 SO). MIDDLE INFIELD MAGIC: Not only have SS Argenis Diaz and 2B Brian Friday meshed well defensively during their first season as a double play combination the two infielders have only committed three errors in 20 team games, each player has gone on a hot streak at the plate recently as well Diaz, who is currently riding a six-game hitting streak, has put together a 10-for-23 stretch (.435 batting average) during which he has tallied seven RBI and a brief two-game promotion to Pittsburgh His double play partner, Friday, has been equally impressive of late, hitting at a.389 clip (7-for-18) to go along with five runs scored, three doubles and two RBI. SPEEDSTERS: Following the Indians four steal attack against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Tuesday April 27, the Tribe now has 30 stolen bases on the season, which is second to Durham for the best total in the International League... Indianapolis also leads the IL with 10 different individuals having stolen at least one base, one player ahead of Pawtucket, which has had nine different individuals steal at least one bag and two players ahead of Durham and Gwinnett, who have each seen eight individual players collect at least one steal The Tribe led the IL in steals for four consecutive seasons from (163 in 05, 180 in 06, 163 in 07 and 198 in 08) before finishing tied for eighth (98) last season. FANTASTIC FOUR: LHP Justin Thomas four inning save on April 27 against Pawtucket was the first save of more than three innings for an Indians pitcher since RHP Marino Salas went 3.1 innings and allowed two hits and one run to record the save on August 10, 2008, a 6-4 Indians victory... The last save for an Indians pitcher of four or more innings came on July 16, 2006, when RHP Matt Ginter tossed 4.0 innings and allowed a run on a solo home run to earn the save in the Indians 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Bisons Thomas, however was not the only Tribe reliever to work four spectacular innings out of the bullpen this season as just a day before (April 26), fellow southpaw Corey Hamman tossed four scoreless innings in the Tribe s 15 inning marathon win against Louisville It was just the third time that Hamman had worked four frames of relief during his career, with Hamman having worked 4.1 innings of relief on August 5, 2004 with High-A Lakeland and 4.1 innings with the Indians on September 4 last season.
