1 Playoff Game #7, Governors Cup Finals Game #3 Thursday, September 14th PNC Field 6:35 PM Durham Bulls (86-56 / 4-2) vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (86-55 / 4-2) - Series Tied 1-1 RHP Brent Honeywell (12-8, 3.64 / 0-0, 4.26) vs. RHP Chance Adams (11-5, 2.89 / 1-0, 3.60) Tonight s Game The Bulls head to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with the Governors Cup Finals tied at 1-1 against the RailRiders, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The series has already seen a pair of shutouts over the first two games, with the Bulls taking Game One 6-0 before the RailRiders responded with a 4-0 victory in Game Two. In their previous 10 Championship Round appearances the Bulls have split the first two games four times, with the team going on to win the series once. Last Game The Durham Bulls offense was held in check Wednesday night in the team s final game of the year at the DBAP, as the club was held to three hits in a 4-0 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders that tied the Governors Cup Finals at one game apiece. A pitchers duel between the Bulls Yonny Chirinos and the RailRiders Domingo German kept both offenses in check, but Scranton/WB was able to scrape together single runs in the first, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings for the 4-0 final score. Durham got runners into scoring position in the second, fourth, fifth, and ninth frames, but left the men stranded in all three opportunities resulting in the shutout. Back-to-Back Shutouts The 2017 Governors Cup Finals has consisted of two shutouts in it s first two games, with the Bulls taking Game One 6-0 before the RailRiders won Game Two 4-0. The consecutive shutouts are nothing new to the Championship Round or to Scranton/WB for that matter, as the RailRiders posted backto-back 3-0 wins over Gwinnett to close out last year s Finals. Hard Luck Loss for Chirinos RHP Yonny Chirinos may not have had his best stuff Wednesday night, but the Bulls ace still worked through five innings and allowed just one run on three hits, two walks, and one strikeout. The Venezuela native retired the final nine batters he faced, but that lone first inning run on an infield single was enough to hand him the loss for the night. The outing was the 15th time in 24 starts this year (including playoffs) that Chirinos allowed one or fewer earned runs, with the 23-year-old going 9-1 in such games prior to last night. German Dominates Again RailRiders ace Domingo German had his way with the Durham lineup again last night, as the Dominican Republic native shutout the Bulls over seven innings on one hit, three walks, and eight strikeouts. The postseason performance was just the latest dominant outing for German against the Bulls in 2017, joining shutouts on both 8/20 and 8/10. Overall, German has not allowed a run over 20 total frames against Durham this year. Bauers Keeps Bashing Jake Bauers continued to bash his was through the playoffs last night with a 2-3 game including two doubles and a walk. Bauers has collected at least one hit in all six of the Bulls playoff games so far, including four multi-hit performances. The 21-year-old leads all postseason batters with a.696 Slugging Percentage and is tied for the lead in Average (.435), Hits (10), and Runs (5). With at least two and as many as three playoff games remaining Bauers has a chance to break several Durham postseason records, including Hits (14), Runs (8), and Doubles (4). Bulls vs. RailRiders: 2017 The Bulls won their season series against the RailRiders 4-3, with the teams splitting a four-game series in Durham August before the Bulls took two of three in Scranton/WB August Despite the Bulls taking the season series, the RailRiders actually out-hit them while also posting a lower team ERA Scranton/WB also had a sizable advantage in home runs at 9-4. Bulls vs. RailRiders: Individual Performers Of the remaining players with the Bulls, Taylor Featherson led the offense against the RailRiders with a OPS consisting of a.389 average (7-18), 2 HR, and 6 RBI. Willy Adames also posted big numbers vs. the top team in the North, batting.379 (11-29) with 3 2B, and 6 RBI. On the mound, Game Three starter Brent Honeywell made two starts against the Riders this year and posted a 3.00 ERA (4 ER, 12 IP) with 12 Ks and a.195 BAA. Scranton/WB, meanwhile, saw Miguel Andujar bat.304 (7-23) with a HR, 4 RBI, and an.863 OPS vs. Durham. RHP Domingo German led the RailRiders pitching staff, as the Game Two starter tossed 13 total scoreless innings with 17 Ks and a.159 BAA in two starts against the Bulls. Bulls vs. RailRiders: Playoff History The Bulls and RailRiders have met twice in the Governors Cup Finals before, with the meetings coming in consecutive seasons from 2008 to Scranton/WB took home the title in 08 by a 3-1 margin before Durham got some revenge the next year with a 3-0 sweep. Governors Cup Finals History Both the Bulls and the RailRiders are no strangers to playing in the Championship Round of the Governors Cup playoffs. The Bulls are in the postseason for the 14th time in their 20-year, Triple-A history and are playing in their 11th Finals, with the club going 4-6 over their previous nine series. The RailRiders are in the Finals for the seventh time in franchise history, with the team having won the cup in twice. 17 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Behind (Division) 0.0 Games Behind (WC) 0.0 Current Streak L1 Home Road vs. RHP (starter) vs. LHP (starter) vs. South Division vs. North Division vs. West Division Day 9-12 Night (5:05+) Extra Innings 5-8 Shutouts 18-8 One-Run Games Three or fewer Four or more Scoring First Opponent Scores First Leading after Trailing after Tied after Series Openers Series Finales Rubber Matches 7-3 Doubleheader Games 4-2 Sweep/Swept/Split 1/0/2 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 1/0/1 3-Game Series 17-6 Sweep/Swept 4/1 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 6/2/8 Sweep/Swept 2/1 5-Game Series 1-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 7-7 Tuesday 14-7 Wednesday 13-6 Thursday 13-8 Friday 14-7 Saturday 15-9 Sunday April 16-7 May June July August September BULLS vs. RAILRIDERS Overall 4-3 DBAP 2-2 PNC Field Head-to-Head 3-4 BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Friday, September Scranton/WB RHP Burch Smith (2-1, 1.65) RHP Brady Lail (6-5, 5.17) 6:35 pm Saturday, September Scranton/WB RHP Jose Mujica (13-8, 3.03 / AA) LHP Nestor Cortes (2-4, 1.49) 4:05 pm Today s game will be broadcast on Buzz Sports Radio: 96.5 FM in Durham and 99.3 FM in Raleigh

2 Repeat Champions? The defending I.L. champion RailRiders are attempting to be the first team since the Columbus Clippers to win backto-back International League titles. The Bulls accomplished the rare feat themselves back in 2002 and 2003 with the first two of their four league championships. Historic Strikeout Total The Bulls pitching staff ended the regular season with 1,421 strikeouts for the year. The impressive K total easily broke the Bulls own International League record of 1,287 from 2016, and is also a new all-time record for Minor League Baseball after surpassing the 2015 San Jose Giants 1,383 last week. If that weren t impressive enough the Durham staff also entered some truly historic territory with their strikeout total placing them eighth all-time in all of professional baseball, falling just beding the 2013 Detroit Tigers and the 2015 Chicago Cubs despite playing in 20 fewer games than the teams in front of them. Yarbrough & Honeywell Pace Strikeout Record Leading the way for the Bulls historic strikeout total were two pitchers who finished atop the individual K leaderboard in LHP Ryan Yarbrough and RHP Brent Honeywell. Yarbrough finished the regular season with 159 punchouts, the most in the I.L. and the second-highest total in Bulls history behind Jaime Schultz s 2016 total of 163. Finishing right behind Yarbrough was Honeywell, who ended his campaign with a career-high 152 strikeouts. Honeywell actually beat out his teammate for the top spot in K/9 IP ratio, where the Rays No. 1 prospect paced the league at compared to Yarbrough s That s A Lot Of Wins The 2017 Bulls came up just short in their bid to finish with the most wins in franchise history, but the club s final record still ranks 4th all-time. The Single-Season Strikeout Record SEASON TEAM Ks 2016 LA (NL) WASH CLE CHI (NL) TB CHI (NL) DET BULLS 1421 Best Records in Bulls History 1st: 1969 (89-51) 2nd: 2010 (88-55) 3rd: 2013 (87-57) 4th: 2017 (86-56) club finished just one game back of the 2013 team for third all time, which was also the last team to win the Governors Cup. The 2010 Bulls ended the year (.615) for the best Triple-A record in team history, wihle the 1962 squad went (.636) while playing in the Class B Carolina League for the best overall record in Durham history. With Room to Spare Durham ran away with the I.L. South Division in 2017, as the club finished with a league-best 15 game advantage over second place Gwinnett. The robust cushion marked the first time the Bulls finished with a double-digit lead in the division since ending the 2013 campaign with a 10 game advantage over second place Norfolk. The 15-game difference is also the largest for any divisional winner in the I.L. since Durham won the South by 16 games over Gwinnett in One-Run Success A major reason for the Bulls success this season has been the club s ability to win tight games. Durham finished the regular season with a.583 winning percentage (21-15) in one-run games, the third-best mark in the I.L. behind only fellow playoff contenders Scranton/WB (.639) and Lehigh Valley (.622). Indianapolis was on the other end of the spectrum however, as the Indians finished 11th in the 14-team league with a losing.447 winning percentage (21-26). Since We Last Met The Bulls and RailRiders last faced each other in a three-game series from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre August In the little more than two weeks remaining in the regular season since that matchup, the Bulls finished 9-7 while the RailRiders went 7-9 resulting in both teams ending the year tied for the I.L. lead with 86 wins. Round One Recap: Bulls The Bulls defeated the Indianapolis Indians in the First Round of the playoffs three games to one. The Bulls took care of business at home in the first two games, winning 10-3 and 2-0 at the DBAP to take a 2-0 series lead. The Indians came back with a 5-0 win in Game Three to extend the series, but Durham finished things off with a late rally in Game Four resulting in a 4-3 victory and a 3-1 series win. Jake Bauers led the Bulls bats in the series with a.375 average (6-16), a home run, double, and two RBI. RHP Yonny Chirinos put up the most impressive outing on the mound with 7 scoreless innings in Game Two. Round One Recap: RailRiders The RailRiders advanced to the Governors Cup Finals by defeating the Lehigh Valley IronPigs three games to one. The Riders had the start of their series delayed a day due to rain before they dropped Game One 6-5. It was all Scranton/WB from that point on however, as they took the next game in Lehigh Valley 4-2 before winning 6-1 and 1-0 in Scranton to advance to the Finals. Donovan Solano was the big bat in Round One, after batting.438 (7-16) with a double and four RBI. LHP Nestor Cortes led the pitching staff with eight strikeouts over seven scoreless innings while earning the win in Game Four. South Division Champs The Bulls clinched the IL South Division this season to return to the Governors Cup Playoffs after a two year absence. With 13 division titles in their 20 years as a Triple-A team, the past two marks marked just the second time that the Bulls failed to win the division in back-to-back seasons (the other was a three-year stretch from ). Since Durham joined the International League in 1998, only Norfolk (3) and Charlotte (2) have won more than one division title. Bulls vs. The Best While the Bulls certainly took care of business against their weaker opponents this season with a record against sub.-500 teams, Durham also finished with a solid winning percentage against the league s best teams. Against the six teams in the I.L. that finished the year.500 or better, the Bulls went for a.576 winning percentage. The Bulls biggest success came against divisional rival Gwinnett, where Durham went The club also posted winning records against Indianapolis (6-4), Rochester (4-2), Lehigh Valley (4-3), and Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre (4-3). The only team to finish the year with an overall winning record and a winning record vs. Durham was Columbus, who finished the year 5-2 against the Bulls. Three-Headed Monster Durham enters the post-season with arguably the best top of the rotation in the International League, with LHP Ryan Yarbrough, RHP Yonny Chirinos, and RHP Brent Honeywell. All three pitchers finished in the Top five in the IL in Wins (Yarbrough 2nd, 13 / Chirinos & Honeywell T-3rd, 12), while the Bulls are the only team to boast two current pitchers in the Top 10 of the league in ERA with Chirinos ranking 4th (2.74) and Yarbrough 8th (3.43). Yarbrough also finished atop the league in Strikeouts (159), a category where Honeywell ranked 2nd (152). Continuing the trend both Yarbrough (3rd, IP) and Chirinos (5th, IP) ranked in the Top 5 in Innings Pitched, as well as Fewest BB/9 IP (Chirinos 2nd, 1.45 / Yarbrough 5th, 2.17). Lastly, Chirinos also pops up in the Top 5 in the IL in WHIP (2nd, 0.98) PLAYOFFS BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Ahead (Division) 15.0 Current Streak L1 Home 3-1 Road 1-1 vs. RHP (starter) 4-2 vs. LHP (starter) 0-0 vs. North Division 1-1 vs. West Division 3-1 Day 0-0 Night (5:05+) 4-2 Extra Innings 0-0 Shutouts 2-2 One-Run Games 1-0 Three or fewer 1-0 Four or more 2-2 Scoring First 3-0 Opponent Scores First 1-2 Leading after Trailing after Tied after Series Openers 2-0 Series Finales 1-0 Monday 0-0 Tuesday 1-0 Wednesday 1-1 Thursday 1-0 Friday 0-1 Saturday 1-0 Sunday FIRST ROUND 9/6 vs. IND W /7 vs. IND W 2-0 IND L 0-5 IND W, 4-3 BULLS TRIPLE-A PLAYOFF RECORD 13 appearances vs. West vs. North vs. South BULLS GOVERNORS CUP FINAL RESULTS 1998 vs Buffalo L vs Charlotte L vs Buffalo W vs Pawtucket W vs Richmond L vs Scranton/WB L vs Scranton/WB W vs Columbus L vs Pawtucket W vs Pawtucket L 3-2
