Following today s series fi nale vs. the Yankees, the Sox conclude the homestand with three games vs. Tampa Bay (8/3-5). Chicago went 7-1 on their last trip from 7/23-30, sweeping four games at Cleveland and winning three of four at Boston. TODAY S STORYLINES Chicago is 10-2 over its last 10 games and (.643) since 6/30, tied with Pittsburgh for the second-best record in MLB. The Sox have lost fi ve of their last six games at U.S. Cellular Field and are 8-11 at home since 6/17 (3-3 series record). Jeff Samardzija has worked at least 7.0 IP in 10 straight starts owns a 2.27 ERA (10 ER/39.2 IP),.180 average and 0.81 WHIP over his last fi ve outings (three quality starts). Chicago is hitting.319 ( ) with 15 homers and 70 runs scored (7.0 R/G) in the last 10 games (10+ hits eight times). LAST NIGHT S RECAP The White Sox broke open a 2-1 game by scoring four runs in the fi fth inning en route to an 8-2 win over the Yankees. Tyler Saladino opened the scoring in the fifth with a RBI single after Jose Abreu was hit by a pitch, Melky Cabrera connected on a three-run homer, his seventh of the season. John Danks earned his sixth win after allowing just one run on three hits (two singles) with four walks and eight strikeouts he retired the fi rst six batters of the game (four strikeouts). Adam Eaton (2-4) and Abreu (1-3) extended their hitting streaks Alexei Ramirez (2-4,2 RBI) hit his sixth home run. The eight runs scored (twice) and six-run margin of victory (three times) matched season highs at U.S. Cellular Field. SE7EN STRONG Jeff Samardzija has worked at least 7.0 IP in 10 consecutive starts, a career high and the longest streak in MLB in The last White Sox pitcher to make 10 straight starts of at least 7.0 IP was Mark Buehrle from 9/4/04-4/21/05 (also 10). Jack McDowell was the last Sox pitcher to work 7.0-plus IP in 11 or more straight starts from 7/11-9/6/93 (12 consecutive). The streak of starts lasting 7.0 IP is the longest in the majors since Clayton Kershaw went 17 straight from 6/3-9/14/14. UPWARD MOBILITY Chicago is (.643) since 6/30, tied with Pittsburgh (18-10) for the second-best record in MLB behind the Yankees (17-9). Chicago is currently 3.5 games behind Minnesota for the second wild card spot the club has passed seven teams in the WC race since 6/30 and made up 3.5 games on the Twins. Following games on 6/29, the White Sox were and 7.5 games out of the second AL wild card spot behind nine teams. FORMIDABLE FOES The White Sox are 1-1 during their current stretch of 19 straight games (since 7/31) vs. opponents who currently lead their division, the wild card or are within 4.0 games of a WC spot. REMEMBERING BILLY The Chicago White Sox are mourning the loss of franchise great Billy Pierce, who passed away on Friday at age 88. Pierce played 18 major-league seasons with Detroit ( ), the White Sox ( ) and San Francisco ( ). The lefty ranks among the White Sox all-time leaders in strikeouts (1st, 1,796), shutouts (3rd, 35), starts (3rd,.390), wins (4th, 195), IP (4th, 2,931.0), CG (T5th, 183) and ERA (10th, 3.19). His No. 19 was retired by the White Sox in 1987, and a statue of the left-hander was unveiled at U.S. Cellular Field in WHITE SOX VS. NEW YORK YANKEES The season series is even at 1-1 with fi ve games remaining.
