Coverage KTGR KTGR KTGR KTGR Mizzou Baseball will take a three-game winning streak to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field this weekend. The Tigers will play a stand-alone game, separate from the tournament Thursday night at Chapman Field on the campus of Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m. before taking part in the three-game tournament. Mizzou will then open the tournament Friday against Houston at 2 p.m. at Whataburger Field. The Tigers and Islanders will play again Saturday at 6 p.m. and Mizzou closes the tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. against Illinois. All four games will air on KTGR FM/105.1 FM/1580 AM in the Mid-Missouri area with Tex Little and Matt Michael on the call. The broadcast will also be available on KTGR.com and fans can also watch both games against Texas A&M Corpus Christi live on the Islanders website. With this weekend being the final non-conference road weekend for the Tigers, it is important to note the success that Mizzou has had in such games in recent memory. Dating back the 2015 season, which was the first time Mizzou played in the Kelberg Bank College Classic, Mizzou is 17-4 in the opening two road weekends of the season. That includes last weekend s 3-1 mark over Eastern Michigan in Fort Myers. Of the 17 wins, three came at the Kleberg Bank College Classic in 2015 as Mizzou went 3-0, winning the tournament. In addition to having an entirely new coaching staff this season in year one under head coach Steve Bieser, Mizzou played eight first-year position players last weekend while five first-year pitchers made their Mizzou debuts, good for a grand total of 13 first-year players seeing the field. ON THE AIR BRETT BOND Junior // Catcher LIVE WEB STREAM Tallied an SEC-best nine hits during week one against Eastern Michigan. His eight runs during the opening weekend were the second-most of any SEC player. Reached base at a.619 clip in the opening weekend while batting.529 Added a homer and a double while driving in five runs. Became the first Mizzou player since 2008 to score five runs in a game, doing so in Mizzou s 27-9 win in game two against EMU TIGER RADIO NETWORK PBP: Tex Little COLOR: Matt Michaels KTGR /105.1 FM // 1580 AM THURS. FRI. SAT. SUN. 83 /63 84 /58 75 /61 79 /67 AM Precip: 10% Thursday s matchup with Texas A&M Corpus Christi will be Mizzou s first true road contest of the season. Mizzou has won its last two true road openers, defeating Florida International, 7-6, a year ago while defeating Georgia at Foley Field, 5-1, in The last true road opener that Mizzou lost was a 3-2 decision at McNeese State in As Mizzou enters week two of the 2017 season, it does so as one of the best offenses statistically in the nation. Mizzou hit.389 last weekend and posted 56 hits over the first four games, averaging 14 per game. Mizzou ranks fourth nationally in batting (.389), fourth in hits (56), fifth in walks (28) and seventh in runs (42). Mizzou also ranks first, second or third in 11 of the major 14 offensive categories among SEC teams after the first weekend of play. Offense was a staple of head coach Steve Bieser s teams over his last three seasons at SEMO. His team ranked in the top 10 nationally in most offensive #C O MMIT T O E XCE L L E NC E 22 nals Regio categories during his final three seasons, during which they won three consecutive OVC Championships. A staple of his offense is his pitch recognition program. After week one, it is clear that Mizzou s offense is buying into Bieser s offensive philosophies. Another key cog to Mizzou s success last weekend was the performance of the bullpen. Much like the offense, the bullpen was supposed to be an area of concern this season, but it was lights out during weekend one. Eight Mizzou relievers combined to throw 17.1 innings, scattering just 13 hits while allowing just five earned runs and striking out 22 in that span. Those numbers are good for a 2.60 ERA and an incredible 11.4 strikeouts per nine inning average. Seven of the eight relievers used allowed one or fewer earned runs while four allowed zero. Freshman T.J. Sikkema struck out a bullpen-high eight batters, including four looking, last weekend. 21 ce eren Conf s le it T orld 6 ge W Colle s ie r e S 1954 e World g Colle ps Cham Precip: 10% Precip: 0% PITCHING MATCHUPS Thursday: RHP Tanner Houck (0-1, 6.35 ERA) vs. RHP Devin Skapura (0-0, 4.76 ERA) Friday: RHP Andy Toelken (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. LHP Seth Romero (1-0, 1.50 ERA) Saturday: LHP Michael Plassmeyer (1-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. RHP Chris Cooper (0-0, 6.00 ERA) Sunday: RHP Liam Carter (1-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. RHP Ty Weber (0-0, 0.00 ERA) e 3-tim e World g Colle er-up n I ZZO U B A SEBA L L Precip: 30%

Mizzou is making its second appearance at the Kleberg Bank College Classic, last playing in the event in Mizzou won the Classic that year with a perfect 3-0 record. Just like this year, Mizzou played a stand-alone game with Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Thursday that year, losing a close contest, 3-2. But Mizzou rebounded to win the Kleberg Bank College Classic by going a perfect 3-0 at the tournament while allowing just one run over the three games. Mizzou defeated Sam Houston State, 2-0, on Friday that year thanks to a walk-off, two-run homer by Brett Bond, the first of his career. Then a junior, Reggie McClain was tremendous in that start for Mizzou, tossing 8.0 innings of shutout baseball, striking out 10 with no walks and just three hits. He earned SEC Pitcher of the Week for his effort in that game. Mizzou then defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi Saturday, 5-1, as Tanner Houck pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out five. In the finale, Mizzou defeated Purdue, 1-0, thanks to a bases-loaded, triple play in the sixth inning to sweep through the tournament. Looking at the all-time series results, Mizzou and Corpus Christi are tied at 1-1 all-time with the only two meetings coming back in Mizzou and Houston have met five times with the Cougars holding a 3-2 edge. The teams last met in 2010 with the Cougars claiming a 3-0 win. Prior to that, the two teams had not met since splitting a two-game set in 1990 and Mizzou has a long history with Illinois as the border rivals have met 26 times over the years. Illinois took last year s meeting at GCS Ballpark, 6-4. Mizzou has won six of the last nine, but Illinois has won three of the last four, winning in 2013, 2015 and Sunday s contest is the first of two scheduled meetings between Mizzou and Illinois as the two will play again in the annual battle for Braggin Rights at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., a St. Louis suburb. That game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on April 4. /MIZZOUBASEBALL MISSOURI_BASEBALL

15 #C2E THE NOTES RECORD WHEN OFFENSE EXPLODES Mizzou s offense was dynamic last weekend during a 3-1 weekend, batting a league-best.389. First-year head coach Steve Bieser and his coaching staff have introduced a new pitch recognition program with this year s team, and if the first weekend is any indication, the team is starting to see the results. While at SEMO, Bieser s teams consistently ranked in the top-10 offensively and after one weekend of play, Mizzou ranks first, second or third in the SEC in 11 of the major 14 offensive categories, leading the league in hitting (.389) and doubles (12). It took Mizzou eight games to crush that many doubles a season ago. The offensive production is a bit of a surprise to anyone who has followed the team closely over the last several seasons. Playing similar competition last season in the opening weekend, Mizzou hit just.213 as a team and Mizzou s offense never peaked any higher than.287 last year. Considering Mizzou lost its top three hitters from a season ago and its top returning hitter - Brian Sharp - hit just.252 a year ago, the offensive outburst comes as a bit of a surprise, but it can be directly correlated to Bieser s approach to offense. Mizzou had just 12 players tally multi-hit games last season and the Tigers already have 11 with multi-hit games. It took Mizzou seven games to get to the 56-hit mark a season ago. In fact, looking back through the records, the 56 hits are the most by a Mizzou team since at least the Gorilla Ball era in The next-closest mark in the span was 53 in Below is a look at where Mizzou ranks in offensive production among SEC schools following week one: 1 st - Batting st - Doubles st - Total Bases st - Walks st - HBP st - ABs nd - Runs nd - RBI nd - OBP nd - Triples rd - Slugging MORE OFFENSIVE NOTABLES FROM LAST WEEK Mizzou s 27 runs in game two of the series against EMU were the most by a Tiger team since 2010 when they hung 28 on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on March 24 of that year. Mizzou s seven doubles in that game are the most by a Mizzou team since Mizzou s 22 hits in that game were the most since Junior C Brett Bond scored five runs, making him the first Tiger since 2008 to score five runs in a game. Mizzou s 17 extra-base hits last weekend are most than they had in the final 11 games combined last season. It took Mizzou nine games a season ago to pass the 17 extra-base hit mark. 12 Mizzou players (nine who met the minimum ABs) hit better than.300 last weekend. 15 FIRST-YEAR PLAYERS When Mizzou takes the field Friday vs. Eastern Michigan, it will do so with 15 first-year players on its roster (8 freshmen and 7 junior college transfers). Additionally, Mizzou has just two four-year players and just one lone senior on its 2017 roster, making the Tigers one of the youngest teams in the SEC. OF Kirby McGuire is the team s only senior but has joined the program last season as he has been with the program just one year. Mizzou has just two players - RS juniors Cole Bartlett and Ryan Lee. Looking deeper at the numbers, Mizzou has 34 players on its roster as it breaks camp for the season opener. Of the 34, 24 are first- or second-year players at Mizzou. Mizzou is one of only two SEC schools with just one senior on the roster. Below is a breakdown of the SEC schools: School First Year Players Seniors Mizzou 15 1 Georgia 17 1 Ole Miss 17 2 Vanderbilt 14 2 Florida 13 2 Mississippi State 16 3 South Carolina 16 4 Alabama 12 4 Texas A&M 16 5 Arkansas 18 6 Tennessee 17 7 Kentucky 13 7 LSU 13 9 Auburn 20 9 A key spot for the Tigers that will feature the most turnaround from a year ago is the infield. 16 @MIZZOUBASEBALL THE NOTES QUICK FACTS Brian Sharp. He moves to first base to try and fill the void left by Zach Lavy who was one of the best all-around first basemen in the country last year. Sharp primarily played at third base a year ago. Mizzou played eight first-year position players last weekend in Fort Myers and five pitchers made their Mizzou debuts as 13 of Mizzou s 15 first-year players saw action during week one. FIRST-YEAR INSTANT IMPACT While we detail Mizzou s youth in depth above, a huge factor to the team s success this season will ultimately prove to be the success that the first-year players have on the program. Should they continue the production from week one, Mizzou could see plenty of success. Offensively, Mizzou had eight first-year players get an at-bat last weekend. Those eight players combined to go 18-for-29 (.358) with 18 runs, 19 RBI, five doubles, a homer and 15 walks. On the mound, five Mizzou newcomers appeared in a game over the weekend. The combined to throw 12.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs (1.46 ERA) with 15 strikeouts. Preseason All-American RHP Tanner Houck (Collinsville, Ill.) checked in at No. 8 on the list while RHP Bryce Montes De Oca (Lawrence, Kan.) checked in at No. 100 to close out the list. The list attempts to rank the top college prospects who are eligible for this summer s Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Houck, who was named a Preseason All-American last month, is coming off of a stellar sophomore season during which he posted a 2.99 ERA in innings pitched, allowing just 82 hits while striking out a career-best 106 against only 27 walks. He went 5-6 in 15 starts and was twice named SEC Pitcher of the Week while garnering Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors following his start against Vanderbilt. He limited batters to just.209 hitting in Houck, who owns a career record and 3.23 career ERA, will anchor Mizzou s pitching staff for first-year head coach Steve Bieser. In two years, Houck has limited batters to.220 hitting and owns a strikeout-walk ratio of 5.1 (197-39). He has thrown more than 100 innings in each of his first two seasons as a Tiger and is expected to be one of the first 10 players selected in next year s Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Montes De Oca is expected to be a big piece of Mizzou s pitching rotation in 2017 as well. Drafted in the 14th round out of high school, he was slowed by injury last season, but his 100 fastball has caught the attention of scouts. He has made eight appearances in his career, but was fully healthy over the summer in the Cape Cod League and during Mizzou s fall training period. He has limited batters to just.107 hitting in his career with 10 strikeouts in 8.1 innings as he possesses dynamic stuff. HOUCK A CONSENSUS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Mizzou junior righty Tanner Houck was named a preseason All-American by four major college baseball publications, including three first team distinctions, prior to the 2017 season. Baseball America, D1Baseball and PerfectGame all dubbed Houck a first team honoree while Collegiate Baseball tabbed Houck as a third team All-American in the preseason. Houck was a preseason All-America third team selection by PerfectGame last season, making him Mizzou s first Preseason All-American since Kyle Gibson and Trevor Coleman earned the distinction in A LOOK AT BIESER S COACHING STAFF The first order of business for Coach Bieser when he took the job was to get to know his Mizzou players before hitting the ground looking to hire his coaching staff. It is no secret that pitching and defense are the name of the game in the SEC, which is why Bieser was immediately enticed by the credentials of Patrick Hallmark, a coach who helped engineer one of the most successful runs in college baseball at Rice. Bieser tabbed Hallmark as Mizzou s new pitching coach, but it was the versatility that Hallmark brought to the table that was most appealing to Mizzou s first-year coach. Before serving as Rice s pitching coach, Hallmark also served as the team s hitting and defensive coach while also training the team s catchers. A jack-of-all-trades, Hallmark helped Rice to 11 consecutive NCAA Regionals and three College World Series appearances in multiple roles with the Owls. With Hallmark signed up and ready to go, it was time for Bieser to find a recruiting coordinator. That decision was easy as he looked at his SEMO staff and identified Lance Rhodes as a guy who could come in and help Mizzou reload its roster, year after year. After hiring the two full-time assistants, Bieser then rounded out his staff with a variety of impressive hires. First, he retained director of operations Evan Pratte, who has been with Mizzou for 20 years and brings a wealth of knowledge, a tireless work ethic and familiarity with the program that undoubtedly helped with a seamless transition for the new staff. It is also no secret that SEMO s offense was one of the nation s best under Bieser and he brought one of the key reasons for that success to Mizzou in hitting coach and volunteer assistant Dillon Lawson. Lawson s success with the Redhawks parlayed into a job with the Houston Astro s minor league system where he helped the organization become the top offensive organization in America according to the baseball pundits. Using a pitch recognition system and a variety of advanced metrics, Lawson brings a unique approach to hitting and will undoubtedly have a huge impact on Mizzou s hitters. In another impressive addition, former big league standout Brian McRae joined Bieser s staff as a student manager as he returned to school to finish his college degree at Mizzou. It just so happens that McRae was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the New York Mets in 1997 where he played centerfield. Following the trade, the Mets of course had to send a player down to the minor leagues and that player just happened to be Steve Bieser himself. The two since formed a friendship and that led to both being at Mizzou. Bieser rounded out his staff with the addition of graduate assistant Joe Migliaccio while retaining former Mizzou standout Brett Peel as a graduate manager. Founded Enrollment...35,441 Nickname... 18 @MIZZOUBASEBALL #MIZZOUMADE MAX SCHERZER 2013, 2016 CY YOUNG WINNER IAN KINSLER 4-TIME ALL-STAR 2016 AL GOLD GLOVE KYLE GIBSON 2015 TWINS PITCHER OF THE YEAR MAX SCHERZER // SP // WASHINGTON NATIONALS One could make the argument that Max Scherzer is the most successful professional athlete to ever come out of Mizzou, in any sport. A three-time MLB All-Star and two-time Cy Young winner, Scherzer has led the American League in wins twice and is coming off of a season that earned him his second Cy Young Award. He is just the sixth pitcher ever to earn the Cy Young in both the AL and the NL after earning the 2013 award with Detroit. Scherzer was sensational at Mizzou, earning Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honors in 2005 while being inducted into the 2012 Mizzou Athletics Hall of Fame class. He was drafted 11 th overall in 2005 (the first ever Tiger to be drafted in the first round) and began a long line of Mizzou hurlers taken in the first round. Scherzer debuted in the major leagues on April 29, 2008, He earned the American League Cy Young in 2013, opening the season with a 12-0 mark while starting the All-Star Game. He surpassed the 1,000-strikeout mark that season and finished the regular season with a 21-3 record and a 2.90 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP and a career-high 240 strikeouts. He was the league s only 20-game winner that season and received 28 of 30 first-place votes in the Cy Young balloting that year. Scherzer signed a seven-year deal worth $210 million with the Washington Nationals prior to the 2015 season. He tossed two no-hitters (one batter shy of a perfect game against the Pirates in June) and had two game scores of 97 or better, becoming the first to do that twice in a season since Pedro Martinez in Nolan Ryan in 1990 is the only other pitcher to do so. IAN KINSLER // 2B // DETROIT TIGERS Despite spending just one season at Mizzou, Ian Kinsler made quite an impact and was a star that helped lay the foundation for a Mizzou team that went to NCAA Regionals from His 2003 team was the first regional team at Mizzou since He was inducted into the Mizzou Athletics Hall of Fame in Kinsler is a four-time MLB All-Star, has twice joined the club and was the 2014 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year winner at second base in He first joined the club in 2009 and hit for the cycle that season as well. While with the Rangers, he set club records for leadoff homers and times stealing third base. He again went for in 2011, again for the Rangers. That year, he hit a leadoff homer in each of the first two games of the season, becoming the first player to ever accomplish that feat. Kinsler was an All-Star in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014, doing so most recently with the Detroit Tigers. Kinsler earned his first career Gold Glove last season, honoring the top second baseman in the AL. KYLE GIBSON // SP // MINNESOTA TWINS After a successful career at Mizzou, Kyle Gibson was a first round draft pick in 2009, going 22nd overall to the Minnesota Twins. He made his major league debut in 2013 as Tommy John surgery slowed his progress to the major leagues. Serving as the Twins No. 3 starter in 2014, he had a breakout season in 2015, earning the club s Pitcher of the Year Award, tallying 11 wins and a 3.84 ERA in a team-high innings, striking out 145 batters. Gibson has been touted as a possible breakout star in 2017, so he is certainly a pitcher to watch as the Twins have hopes of getting back to the postseason with Gibson heading the pitching staff. AARON CROW // RP // CHICAGO CUBS Aaron Crow was the heir apparent to Max Scherzer and he was outstanding in college, guiding Mizzou to host the 2007 Columbia Regional. He went 23-8 with a 3.27 ERA in his college career and the highlight of his career came in 2006 when he earned his first career victory in a complete game over Pepperdine, staving off elimination in the regional round as Mizzou became the first ever #4 seed to win a regional that season. In 2007, Crow went 13-0 with a 2.35 ERA and was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year with four complete game shutouts. He had a 43.1 shutout inning streak that season. Crow was drafted in the first round twice, going as high as ninth before electing to not sign with the Nationals in In 2006, he was drafted 12 th by the Royals and wound up becoming an All-Star in 2011 with the club. He was moved to Miami but missed the 2014 season with Tommy John surgery. AARON CROW 2011 ALL-STAR MATT STITES ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS NICK TEPESCH MINNESOTA TWINS /MIZZOUBASEBALL MISSOURI_BASEBALL

19 #C2E HEAD COACH STEVE BIESER STEVE BIESER 1 nd Season at Mizzou - Head Coach Southeast Missouri, 1989 Career Record: // 3-1 at Mizzou will usher in a new era of baseball as Steve Bieser has been tabbed as the next head coach, announced June 30. Bieser (pronounced: Bee-zer) will be Mizzou s 14th head coach and just the fourth since Bieser comes to Mizzou after an extremely successful career at Southeast Missouri, where he became the only coach ever to win three consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Championships and guided the Redhawks to their first NCAA Regional last year since A two-time OVC Coach of the Year, Bieser won 35 or more games in each of his last three seasons at SEMO, a feat that had been accomplished just once before he took over the program in Bieser turned in a.587 winning percentage in his time at SEMO, the best among any coach in program history. Bieser turned in a banner year in 2016, as he earned his 100th career victory and opened OVC play with a perfect 12-0 record, the best start in program history. The season culminated in a regular season OVC Championship, an OVC Tournament title and the school s first NCAA Regional since 2002, qualifying for the Starkville Regional at SEC Champion Mississippi State. Prior to serving as SEMO s head coach beginning in 2013, Bieser was the pitching coach for his alma mater from and he carried his prowess for developing hurlers into his head coaching tenure. His most notable pupil was LHP Joey Lucchesi, who became the only pitcher to ever win OVC Pitcher of the Year in backto-back season. Lucchesi shattered the Southeast Missouri and Ohio Valley singleseason strikeout records while also consistently leading the nation in 2016 in the category. He became the first Southeast pitcher to win 10 games in 13 years. He was on the watch lists for the prestigious Golden Spike Award, as well as the College Baseball Hall of Fame s National Pitcher of the Year award. Following the season, Lucchesi became the highest draft pick ever out of Southeast Missouri when he was selected in the fourth round (114th overall pick) by the San Diego Padres. He was one of two Redhawks drafted in 2016, marking the first time since 2012 that Southeast had multiple draft picks. I am truly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to be a part of the University of Missouri community and serve as the head baseball coach, Bieser said. I can t express enough the gratitude I have for Interim Chancellor Foley, Athletic Director Mack Rhoades and the search committee for having the confidence in me to lead this program. When I started my coaching career, I had always dreamed of the opportunity to lead this program. There is a strong tradition and rich history of Missouri Tiger baseball. I understand the responsibility and I am fully committed and ready to continue building the tradition. As life-long Missourians, my family and I feel truly blessed to be part of the University of Missouri and the Columbia community. Aside from success on the field, academic success was a hallmark of Bieser s program at SEMO. He mentored three Academic All-Americans, 10 Academic All- District picks, one OVC Scholar-Athlete, six OVC Medal of Honor recipients and 48 OVC Commissioner s Honor Roll selections. SEMO had at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point-average in all four years under Bieser, grabbing one OVC Team Academic Award along the way. After a successful playing career at SEMO, Bieser was drafted in the 32nd round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He played 13 years as a professional with nine of those years coming at AAA or higher. He made his Major League debut on April 1, 1997, with the New York Mets and played 60 career MLB games.
