RHP Kurt Heyer proceeded to retire all 15 batters that he faced in a row, dominating through five perfect innings in the start. Springfield added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, before RHP Josh Lucas slammed the door with a scoreless seventh to close the win. Flying high The Cards have been rolling through the homestand, going 5-2 through the first seven games and collecting wins in six of their last eight overall. Springfield has opened their lead for 1 st place in the North Division First Half Standings to 3.5 games over the 2 nd - place Naturals, 4.5 games over the 3 rd -place Drillers and 7.0 games over the 4 th -place Travs. The Cardinals are 2 nd in the league and lead the division with a 3.36 ERA, while ranking 3 rd in the league and leading the division in average (.256) and ranking 2 nd with 38 home runs. Caldwell comes through With a two-out RBI bunt single in the sixth inning of game two yesterday, 2B Bruce Caldwell has continued to excel with runners in scoring position and two outs. In those opportunities, he is hitting.467 (7x15) with two homers and a team-best 12 RBIs, while hitting.379 with two homers and a team-leading 18 RBIs with runners in scoring position in general. Caldwell leads the club and is tied for 5 th in the league with 23 RBIs on the campaign, while ranking 2 nd on the team and 7 th in the league in batting average (.317). Pace setters The Cardinals starting rotation has been stifling all season, with three starters currently ranking in the top 10 in lowest ERAs in the Texas League RHP Mike Mayers (5 th, 2.61) who is currently in Memphis, RHP Corey Baker (6 th, 3.00) and RHP Trey Nielsen (7 th, 3.09). In total, the starters have combined to go with a 3.12 ERA, surrendering only 73 earned runs through innings of work. Moving runners C Carson Kelly has had particular success with the bat when runners have gotten on base for him, compiling a.317 average (13x41) with men on. The Portland, OR native has been even better with runners in scoring position, hitting.353 (6x17) with five RBIs, and better still with runners in scoring position and two outs, hitting.444 (4x9) with three RBIs.
