San Francisco Chronicle Giants get some hits, beat Braves John Shea SF Giants Press Clips Sunday, May 28, 2017 Now that s what s known around these parts as an offensive eruption. Two home runs, a few inches from a third. A run-scoring single by the pitcher. Three hits by the catcher, and he wasn t Buster Posey. Two crooked-number innings. It might be an ordinary day s work for other teams, but this was party time for the Giants, who halted their four-game losing streak with Saturday night s 6-3 victory over the Braves. Ty Blach continued the impressive run by the starting pitchers with 72/3 innings of six-hit ball, his third straight win and the fifth time in seven starts he completed at least seven innings. Backup catcher Nick Hundley hit his first home run as a Giant, a two-run shot in the second inning, to create rare early momentum, and Brandon Belt hit his 10th homer to open a three-run rally in the fourth. You know, let it go. Let s let the bat go, said manager Bruce Bochy, suggesting hitters had been in a funk because of overthinking and trying too hard to produce. You can t control the result, but you can control a good swing, and they had better swings tonight. Belt felt relieved, having been robbed in his first at-bat by Ender Inciarte, who leaped to the top of the wall in left-center for the catch. So Belt hit one a bit deeper to right-center, this one clearing the wall. After the first one didn t go, I didn t think the other one would, either, Belt said. Nice surprise, I guess. Two strikeouts later, the Giants strung four hits. Hundley and Mac Williamson singled, and so did Blach. It was Blach s fourth career hit his first against a pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw. Blach s single scored Hundley, and Denard Span followed with an opposite-field double for the inning s third run. It s much better to play with a lead, Hundley said.

Blach, who added a single in the seventh, has had just one bad start as Madison Bumgarner s replacement, a three-inning clunker in Cincinnati. He credited Hundley s game-calling and effectively located his fastball and mixed in changeups on a night his breaking ball wasn t particularly sharp. Asked about moving from the bullpen to rotation after Bumgarner went on the disabled list, Blach said, I ve always been a starter, so it was a pretty easy transition to make.... I m enjoying the process and learning as much as I can. No one reached third base on Blach until the eighth, when the Braves scored their first two runs on Brandon Phillips single and Nick Markakis fielder s-choice groundout. That ended Blach s evening at 102 pitches, and reliever Derek Law surrendered a Matt Kemp double before Matt Adams was retired on a weak grounder. Hundley s third hit provided the Giants final run in the eighth, wiping out the save situation and keeping closer Mark Melancon in the bullpen, at least momentarily. Law began the ninth, issued a one-out walk and gave up a triple to Danny Santana, cutting the deficit to three and creating another save situation for Melancon, who got the final two outs. Bochy rested two of his struggling hitters, Posey (3-for-23) and Christian Arroyo (0-for-21). Posey got a night-preceding-a-day-game break while Arroyo s time off will be a couple of days. Bochy wants him to chill mentally and try to get his rhythm back. In nine games entering Saturday, the rotation had a 2.30 ERA but the offense had a.191 batting average with runners in scoring position. In those spots Saturday, the Giants were 3-for-5. San Francisco Chronicle Giants Jarrett Parker, Hunter Pence near rehab assignments John Shea Jarrett Parker said he tries not to imagine what he could have done as the Giants left fielder if healthy. Instead, he looks ahead. I m going to try to make an impact when I come back here, Parker said. The wait might not be long. Parker took on-field batting practice Saturday for the first time since fracturing his right collarbone and anticipates being ready when eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list June 16. Parker, who hit one ball over the right-field wall during BP, is expected to start a rehab assignment within a week. In his ninth game of the season, he was hurt crashing into the outfield wall after making a running catch. What I made peace with is, I played the game trying to do the best I can and tried to make every play and do everything I could to help the team, Parker said. In that moment, that s what I tried to do. I thought I had an extra step or two. Obviously I didn t. Live and learn and move forward.

On the season, Giants left fielders have hit.204 with a.257 on-base percentage and three home runs. It s been a popular subject here this year, left field, because we haven t had a lot of production, manager Bruce Bochy said. We still need some help there. Eduardo Nuñez has started 16 games in left, an unexpected development, and played third base Saturday with Christian Arroyo getting a rest. Another wounded outfielder, Hunter Pence (strained left hamstring), took batting practice, did some running and is on target to begin his rehab assignment Wednesday or Thursday. Briefly: Third baseman Conor Gillaspie, on rehab for back spasms, had an MRI exam after a setback. He felt tightness in his lower back while taking a swing, detouring his return to the roster. Arroyo is 0-for- 21 and hitting.186; Bochy plans to keep him out of the lineup two games. This will give him a chance to catch his breath, get his mind off it and work on some things, Bochy said. San Jose Mercury News Ty Blach pitches Giants past Braves Paul Gackle SAN FRANCISCO Like Matt Cain, Giants starter Ty Blach continues to dish out his best stuff in the pitcher-friendly confines of AT&T Park. The difference Saturday was that Blach actually received some run support, and plenty of it, as the Giants (21-30) snapped a four-game losing streak by picking up a 6-3 win over the Atlanta Braves. That s big, Blach said, referring to the early run support he received Saturday night. It gives you a lot of confidence as a pitcher to go out there. You can keep the momentum on your side, get a zero, things can start rolling pretty good. After spoiling a seven-inning, one-run performance from Cain on Friday by getting shutout for the fifth time this season, the Giants offense made sure that it didn t deal the same fate to Blach as the lefthander put together one of his strongest starts of the season, tossing seven shutout innings before surrendering a pair of earned runs in the eighth. He also recorded a season-high five strikeouts. The Giants, who ranked 30th in runs per game after Friday s loss to the Braves, scored five times before the start of the fifth inning, capitalizing on catcher Nick Hundley s first home run of the season, first baseman Brandon Belt s 10th of the year and four-consecutive two-out hits in the fourth. Manager Bruce Bochy predicted that the Giants bats would wake up when they returned home to AT&T Park Friday after scoring just six runs in the last three games of their series in the hitter-friendly dimensions of Wrigley Field. His forecast proved to be accurate, it was just a day early. Hundley snapped the Giants 18-inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the second, launching a tworun shot into the left field stands with Aaron Hill aboard. In the fourth, Belt became the first Giant to reach double digits in home runs this season, leading off with a blast to the deep part of the yard in right center.

After Hundley and Mac Williamson reached base on two-out singles later in the inning, Blach provided his own run support by smacking a line drive single to center, driving in a run. Then, Denard Span made it four hits in a row, bringing in Williamson with an opposite-field double down the left field line. I thought this would happen last night, but (Jaime) Garcia was tough, Bochy said. They just turned it up a notch as far as being a bit more aggressive. We ve been a little passive, a little behind on the fastball. Especially when you get into hitter s counts, you want guys to let it go and we were fouling balls off the other way. Let it go. Just let the bat go. You can t control the result, but you can control a good swing, and they had better swings tonight. The Giants added a sixth run in the eighth when Hundley collected his third hit and third RBI of the game, scoring Belt with a two-out bouncer up the middle. The Braves scored a third run in the ninth off reliever Derek Law before closer Mark Melancon came in to record the last two outs and his 10th save of the season. The Giants had scored 37 runs in eight games before the bats went cold in Chicago on Tuesday. I really feel like we ve been trending in the right direction as an offense, Belt said. We had a rough couple of games the past four, five games, but overall, over the past couple of weeks, we ve been moving in the right direction. It s just going up there with a sound approach and getting good pitches to hit. With his fourth-consecutive quality start, Blach (3-2), who s filling in for Madison Bumgarner in the Giants rotation, improved to 2-1 with a 1.87 ERA in five home starts this season. He allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but managed to quickly pitch his way out trouble, inducing double plays in the fourth and the sixth. His fastball, his down angle, his plain was really good. They weren t squaring him up very much, getting a lot of ground balls, Hundley said, evaluating his pitcher s performance. In the eighth inning, if a couple of those balls are a foot either way, we turn another double play, and he s in the ninth unscathed. Blach also did his best Bumgarner impression at plate, adding a single in the seventh to go 2 for 3 on the night with an RBI. But the 26-year-old lefty, who s making a case to keep a spot in the rotation when Bumgarner returns after the All-Star break, isn t planning to trade in the rosin bag for a bat just yet. Anytime you can get out there and give your team a chance to win a ballgame on the mound, that s our main job, he said. The hitting s just a little extra bonus sometimes. San Jose Mercury News Giants could be getting help in left field soon Paul Gackle SAN FRANCISCO A potential answer to the Giants left field problems could surface in a few weeks.

Outfielder Jarrett Parker took on-field batting practice for the first time since he broke his right clavicle in April before the Giants game against the Atlanta Braves at AT&T Park Saturday afternoon and the team expects him to start a rehab assignment in about a week. Manager Bruce Bochy said he s hopeful that Parker could be available in about three weeks. We ll see where he s at a couple weeks into rehab, the Giants manager said. The Giants had high hopes for the 28-year-old outfielder when they penciled him in as their starting left fielder on opening day. The team decided to not pursue a left fielder in free agency during the offseason and the plan after spring training was to have Parker platoon below the Coke bottle at AT&T Park with Chris Marrero. But Parker broke his right clavicle on April 15 while making a sensational catch, crashing into the outfield wall at AT&T Park, putting the Giants revolving door in left into motion. The Giants have started eight different players in left this season. Although Bochy is optimistic about Parker s return, he pumped the brakes on expectations that the slugger could be the savior for an offense ranked last in all of Major League Baseball averaging 3.32 runs per game. What we expect when a guy comes here is to contribute, Bochy said. It s been a popular subject here this year, our left field, because we haven t had a lot of production there. We still need some help there. Parker has been hitting off a tee and taking coach s batting practice in the cage over the last four or five days. He said the swinging isn t causing him any pain. It ll tighten up still pretty quickly, but everything that I ve been told is that s normal, part of the process, Parker said. The 28-year-old outfielder, who s known for his power and high strikeout rate, acknowledged that it s tough to not think about what could have been for him and the team had he not injured himself less than two weeks into the season. But Parker doesn t regret his decision to crash into the wall against the Colorado Rockies to make a play for his team. It was tough for a while right after it happened, Parker said. What I ve made peace with is that I play the game trying to do the best I can, and trying to make every play, and do everything I can to help the team. In that moment, that s what I did. Conor Gillaspie s recovery from back spasms has hit a setback. The Giants were expecting to activate Gillaspie from the 10-day disabled list at some point during their three-game set with the Braves this weekend, but the 29-year-old third basemen underwent an MRI test Saturday after experiencing back tightness while swinging a bat. Don t know the results yet, Bochy said. But we ll get it evaluated once the doctors get here.

Christian Arroyo is finally getting a much-needed break. Bochy was planning to give Arroyo, who struggling through a prolonged slump, a day off in Chicago Thursday, but he was forced to pencil the rookie infielder into the lineup because Eduardo Nunez tweaked a hamstring Wednesday night and couldn t go. Arroyo returned to the lineup against the Braves Friday after Bochy opted to sit second baseman Joe Panik against left-hander Jaimie Garcia. The rookie shortstop is hitless in his last 19 at bats and 5-for-46 (.109) over his last 13 games. He s batting.186 on the season. He ll probably get a couple days off, Bochy said. Hunter Pence is on schedule to start his rehab assignment Wednesday or Thursday. Pence, who s missed the Giants last 13 games with a left hamstring strain, ran sprints Saturday and took batting practice. MLB.com Giants come alive to back stellar Blach Chris Haft and Michael Wagaman SAN FRANCISCO -- Ty Blach doesn't blow away hitters with his stuff or observers with his statistics. All he does is remain steady, a trait that the San Francisco Giants appreciated Saturday night in their 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Blach took a three-hit shutout into the eighth inning before he finally faltered. He ultimately yielded two runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings, marking the fifth time in seven starts that he has worked at least seven innings while surrendering three or fewer earned runs. He also struck out a season-high five. Full Game Coverage Blach's 3.83 ERA is deceiving. He allowed 10 runs (eight earned) in three innings on May 6 at Cincinnati. Without that game, his ERA as a starter is Braves manager Brian Snitker appreciated Blach's finesse. "He was a little here, there and just a tough guy to get a hold of," Snitker said. "That's the first time we've seen that this year, that type of left-hander. That's only the fourth [left-handed] starter we've faced all year, I think. Guys like that can give you trouble." The Giants also revived their offense while ending a four-game losing streak. Having accumulated six runs in their previous four games, they matched that total by relying on an unusual burst of power against Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz, who allowed five of San Francisco's runs in four innings. Nick Hundley's two-run homer in the second inning opened the Giants' scoring, which continued with three runs in the fourth. Brandon Belt's 10th homer of the season launched that uprising. The Giants entered Saturday with a Major League-low 40 home runs.

The Braves brought the potential tying run to the plate with two outs, but Giants reliever Derek Law coaxed Matt Adams' harmless grounder to first base. "We made a run at it late but it's one of them days again where we just got too far down too early," Snitker said. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Help from Hundley: San Francisco signed Hundley as a free agent last offseason primarily for his offensive abilities. The Giants wanted a backup for Buster Posey who resembled Posey a little more in the batter's box. They reasoned that Hundley, who reached double figures in homers in three of the previous four seasons, could fill that role. His season-high three-rbi night, which included a run-scoring single in the eighth inning, provided evidence that he can. Missed chance: Adams seemed to be the right man for the Braves to have at bat in the eighth. The recent acquisition from St. Louis owned a five-game hitting streak, and five of his eight hits with Atlanta had gone for extra bases. With runners on second and third, another gapper would make it a one-run game. But Law won the confrontation by inducing Adams to roll over on a 94 mph fastball. QUOTABLE "It's just kind of a mental lapse out there. I kind of gave in. That really kind of was the downfall of everything right there." -- Foltynewicz, on giving up a two-out, two-strike RBI single to Blach in the fourth SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS Blach stroked singles in the fourth and seventh innings, his first hits off a pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw. Blach collected two hits off Kershaw last Oct. 1 and added another earlier this season. Blach was only the fourth left-handed starter the Braves have faced so far this season. They are 2-2 in those games. UPON FURTHER REVIEW The Braves successfully challenged an eighth-inning ruling that declared Nick Markakis was out at first base on the back end of a double play. A replay review proved that Markakis beat second baseman Joe Panik's relay. WHAT'S NEXT Braves: Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (3-3) pitches the series finale at AT&T Park on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET. Dickey has a 2.88 career ERA against the Giants but has given up 12 earned runs over his last 24 1/3 innings overall. Giants: San Francisco owns a 6-4 record in games started by Johnny Cueto, who will take the ball for Sunday's series finale against the Braves beginning at 1:05 p.m. PT. Cueto is 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA in seven previous appearances against Atlanta. MLB.com Hundley's adjustments produce 1st Giants HR Chris Haft

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nick Hundley's offensive prowess accented the Giants' desire to sign him as a free agent last offseason. That became easy to remember Saturday, when he drove in a season-high three runs and went 3-for-4 in San Francisco's 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves. However, Hundley's hitting potential might have been easy to forget Friday night, when he struck out three times in four at-bats in the Giants' 2-0 loss. Hundley's second start in a row, a rare treat for a backup catcher, set up his reversal of fortune. His presence enabled Buster Posey, who played first base Friday, to receive a complete day off. "That's my job, to drive in runs and help us win," Hundley said. "Yesterday I didn't do a very good job of that. But that's the game. You make adjustments, you continually grind and you come back at it. Thankfully I was back in there today and didn't have to sit on that day yesterday for very long." Hundley sought advice Saturday from hitting coach Hensley Meulens. "We made some really good adjustments," Hundley said. "He had a good idea for me, and I had a good thought on top of that." Careful viewers of Hundley's performance Friday might have noted that his was not an entirely lost evening. He drove a Jaime Garcia pitch to deep right-center field in the one at-bat when he made contact. That demonstrated Hundley's power, which was much more evident Saturday when his two-run homer in the second inning off Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz opened the scoring. It was the first roundtripper of the season for Hundley, who reached double figures in homers in three of the previous four seasons. "It's about time, I guess, right?" Hundley said jokingly. "It's good to get that first one out of the way." Hundley gave the Giants an early lead, which has been an unusual luxury for them this season. It also enabled them to entertain the notion they could handle Foltynewicz, who beat them twice last season. This time, Foltynewicz yielded five runs and seven hits in four innings. "Our at-bats today were outstanding against a guy with really good stuff," Hundley said. "He's a guy who can carry a 97, 98 mile-an-hour fastball the whole game." Hundley added a run-scoring single in the eighth inning, completing an evening in which he lifted his average from.228 to.253. "He really, I think, has had some good at-bats," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's had some tough luck. It was good to see him get off the goose egg, as far as home runs. You like him up there with men on base." MLB.com Cueto looking to end losing skid Michael Wagaman

Right-hander Johnny Cueto of the Giants will attempt to get his season back on track while Atlanta Braves knuckleballer R.A. Dickey tries to do the same thing Sunday in a matchup of struggling veteran pitchers in the series finale at AT&T Park. Cueto (4-4, 4.64 ERA) has dropped three straight decisions and is winless since May 1. He has been dealing with blisters on the index and middle fingers on his right hand, which was an issue in his most recent start when he gave up a season-high three home runs in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. The two-time All-Star has been steadfast in his refusal to skip a start in order to give the blisters time to heal. Instead, Cueto has remained adamant he needs to keep pitching in order to form calluses. Dickey (3-3, 4.17) is also trying to pitch through his own issues after winning three of his first five starts. The Atlanta right-hander has given up 12 earned runs over his last 24 1/3 innings. Of the 32 hits he has allowed during that span, five were home runs. Things to know about this game Dickey's 2.88 career ERA against the Giants is his fourth-best mark against any team he's faced more than three times. He also has a WHIP of 0.96 in five games against San Francisco, the second-lowest of his career. Cueto has allowed 11 home runs this season but only one at AT&T Park. The 31-year-old gave up only 15 homers in all of Atlanta backup catcher Kurt Suzuki will be back behind the plate for the series finale. Suzuki has caught each of Dickey's nine starts this season. MLB.com Pence close to Minor League rehab stint Chris Haft SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that right fielder Hunter Pence was on schedule to begin his Minor League injury rehabilitation assignment Wednesday or Thursday. Pence looked ready to test his strained left hamstring sooner, given the high frequency with which he drove batting-practice pitches over AT&T Park's outfield walls. Pence, who played in at least 154 games per season from before injuries began nagging him, appeared in all of San Francisco's 37 games when he hurt his hamstring. Since then, Justin Ruggiano and Mac Williamson have divided activity in right field. Entering Saturday, Pence was tied for second among Giants hitters with 16 RBIs despite missing 13 games. He also had three home runs while batting.243 with a.289 on-base percentage and a.338 slugging percentage. All three averages would be career lows if Pence maintained those rates through the rest of the season. Parker could start injury rehab soon

Outfielder Jarrett Parker's fractured right clavicle has healed enough to enable him to begin an injury rehab assignment sometime next week. Parker could return to the active roster in two weeks if he continues to progress smoothly. Parker revealed these timetables, which Bochy confirmed. Parker hasn't played since running into AT&T Park's left-field wall to snare a drive by Colorado's DJ LeMahieu on April 15. Saturday, Parker took batting practice on the field for the first time since being injured. "What I've made peace with is I play the game trying to do the best I can and trying to make every play and do everything I can to help the team. In that moment, that's what I did," Parker said, referring to his fateful catch. "I thought I had an extra step or two. Obviously I didn't. You live and you learn and you move forward." Third baseman Conor Gillaspie, who has been on the disabled list since May 11 with back spasms, endured what Bochy called a "setback" by experiencing tightness. That prompted Gillaspie to undergo an MRI to determine the source of the discomfort. Team physicians were expected to examine results of the MRI later Saturday. NBC Sports Bay Area With Bumgarner Sidelined, Blach 'Taking Full Advantage' Of Opportunity Alex Pavlovic SAN FRANCISCO -- At some point over the next four days, Madison Bumgarner will pick up a baseball, stand a few feet across from a member of the training staff, and simply play catch. It'll be a huge step in Bumgarner's rehab, and should it go well, a boost to the psyche of a struggling team. In the meantime, another lefty is making sure the Giants don't suffer too much without their ace, as improbable as that first seemed. Ty Blach took a shutout into the eighth Saturday night and in true Bumgarner fashion, he added a pair of hits and an RBI. The Giants beat the Braves 6-3. They've won Blach's past three starts, and even with a 10-run outing in Cincinnati mixed in, he has a 3.71 ERA since taking the spot left open by a dirt bike accident. "Because of what happened he's in the rotation," manager Bruce Bochy said, "And he's taking full advantage." Blach has shown that long term, he might be a big part of this rotation. It's been years since the Giants locked a young, cost-controlled starter in, and Blach has backed up his big cameo last year. It's possible - - likely even -- that at some point the Giants will need to trade a veteran, perhaps Johnny Cueto, for young bats. Blach provides needed insurance. Short term, he's providing a huge boost to a team that doesn't have much going right. Blach has thrown at least seven innings in his past four starts. He has allowed just eight earned runs in four starts since the one in Cincinnati, throwing 28 2/3 innings. "I feel good," Blach said. "I've always been a starter, so it's been a pretty easy transition to make. I feel comfortable."

The Giants are comfortable behind him, as evidenced by a half-dozen strong defensive plays Saturday. "He's been consistent and he works quickly," first baseman Brandon Belt said. "He's just a great guy to play behind." Blach even joined in at the plate. He had an RBI single in his first at-bat -- his first big league hit off Not Clayton Kershaw -- and later roped another single. Blach even showed off his wheels, busting it from first to third on Denard Span's ball to the corner before Phil Nevin held him up. "I worked into some good counts and I was able to get fastballs," Blach said of his night at the plate. "It's definitely a big confidence booster when your spot comes up and you're able to drive in runs." The night was straight out of Bumgarner's playbook, and it was needed. The Giants had dropped five of six, but Blach was backed by homers from Nick Hundley and Brandon Belt. It got a little hairy late, but the bullpen held on, clinching Blach's third win of the season. He looks poised for many more, and Bochy is happy to keep running him out there. "I'm not surprised by what he's doing," the manager said. NBC Sports Bay Area Instant Analysis: Blach Does It All Vs Braves, Giants Snap Skid Alex Pavlovic SAN FRANCISCO This spot in the rotation is the one reserved for the stopper, the pitcher who takes a game by the throat when his team really needs it. Ty Blach took the mound Saturday for a team that had lost five of six, and just as Madison Bumgarner often has, Blach ended the skid. The young lefty was dominant into the eighth and the bats finally provided enough support. The Giants won 6-3, tying this weekend series with the Braves. Here are five things to know from a night we were reminded that Emilio Bonifacio is in the big leagues --- Blach pitched 7 2/3 innings. He has thrown at least seven innings in his last four starts, and five of seven starts overall. Jeff Samardzija (6) is the only Giants starter who has gone that deep more often. Blach is tied with Johnny Cueto for second-most seven-inning starts on staff, and Cueto has made three additional starts. --- Blach s RBI single in the fourth was -- at the time -- the fourth hit of his career, and the first against a pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw. The ball had an exit velocity of 101 mph. Blach tried to score from first on Denard Span s double, but Phil Nevin held him. Still, the way he was moving, it makes you wonder if Samardzija really is Bruce Bochy s best pitcher-pinch-running option. In the seventh, Blach picked up a second single. --- Blach s only bad start has been the one he made in Cincinnati, where the Giants played like a Double- A team. If you take that one out, Blach has a 2.21 ERA since taking over Bumgarner s rotation spot.

--- Even though he gave up just two earned in 7 2/3, Blach s home ERA actually went up. It s 1.75, which ranks seventh in the National League. The sellout crowd gave Blach a standing ovation when he was pulled in the eighth. --- Blach had a season-high five strikeouts. When he got Nick Markakis to end the first, Blach ended a streak of 37 left-handers faced without a strikeout. He later struck out another lefty, Matt Adams. The new Braves first baseman came up as the tying run in the eighth but Derek Law got him to ground out to first. --- Bonus sixth thing to know... on Blach of course: His first name is Tyson, not Tyler. It s Tyson Michael Blach. Santa Rosa Press Democrat Ty Blach leads Giants to 6-3 win against Braves Josh Dubow SAN FRANCISCO Ty Blach is making the most of his opportunity in San Francisco's rotation after ace Madison Bumgarner went down with an injury. Blach pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning and gave San Francisco's struggling offense a boost with an RBI single during a three-run fourth that helped the Giants snap a four-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night. After starting the season in the bullpen, Blach (3-2) moved into the rotation in late April after Bumgarner got hurt in a dirt bike accident in Colorado. "Because of what happened he's in the rotation," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's taking full advantage of it. He can pitch.... I'm not surprised by what he's doing." Outside of one clunker in Cincinnati when he allowed eight runs in three innings, Blach has given the Giants a chance to win in his other six starts, allowing three or fewer runs in each of them. Blach struck out four of the first eight batters he faced and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. He allowed six hits and two runs in innings and didn't allow a runner to reach third until the eighth when Atlanta scored twice to end his night. "He's got a decent arsenal," Braves catcher Tyler Flowers said. "It seemed like he had pretty good command today too. He made big pitches when guys did get on and got double plays and stuff to shut down any rallies. He threw that ball well." Nick Hundley homered and drove in three runs and Brandon Belt added a solo shot against Mike Foltynewicz (3-5) as the Giants' bats broke out after being held to six runs during the four-game skid. Derek Law got the final out in the eighth and Mark Melancon got two outs for his 10th save in 12 chances. Hundley, getting the start behind the plate to give Buster Posey a rest, opened the scoring with his first homer of the season in the second.

"That gives us a lot of confidence as a pitcher," Blach said. "If you can keep the momentum on your side and get a zero, things can start going pretty good." Hundley added two more hits, including an RBI single in the eighth. The Giants broke the game open with three runs in the fourth, starting when Belt led off the inning with his 10th homer of the season. San Francisco added four straight two-out hits, getting an RBI single from Blach and a run-scoring double from Denard Span to make it 5-0. Foltynewicz allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings. "Everything was up," Foltynewicz said. "Fastball, the slider and the change-up tonight, so they were ready for everything that was in the zone and they did what they had to do with it." TRAINER'S ROOM Braves: 3B Adonis Garcia (Achilles strain) went 1 for 3 with a run and RBI in seven innings in his second rehab game at Triple-A Gwinnett. Giants: OF Jarrett Parker took live BP for the first time since breaking his left collarbone April 15 and is expected to begin a rehab assignment next week.... OF Hunter Pence (left hamstring) also took BP and could begin a rehab assignment in four or five days.... INF Conor Gillaspie had an MRI after having a setback in his rehab when he complained of tightness in his back after a swing. HOME COOKING Blach has been stellar at home. He has a 1.87 ERA in five starts at AT&T Park. RARE LEFTY This marked just the fourth time all season the Braves faced a left-handed starter, fewest in the majors. Danny Santana got the start at third base in place of Rio Ruiz to get another right-handed bat in the lineup but it didn't help. Santana went 0 for 3 against Blach and Atlanta fell to 2-2 this season against lefties. UP NEXT Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (3-3) takes the mound for Atlanta in the series finale against Johnny Cueto (4-4). Sacramento Bee Blach pitches Giants past Braves Paul Gackle SAN FRANCISCO Like Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants starter Ty Blach continues to dish out his best stuff in the pitcher-friendly confines of AT&T Park.

The only difference is that Blach actually received some run support, and plenty of it, Saturday as the Giants (21-30) returned to the win column with a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves. After spoiling a seven-inning, one-run performance from Cain on Friday night, the Giants' offense made sure that it didn't deal the same fate to Blach as the left-hander put together one of his strongest starts of the season, tossing seven shutout innings before surrendering a pair of earned runs in the eighth. He also recorded a season-high five strikeouts. The Giants, who ranked 30th in runs per game after Friday's 2-0 loss to the Braves, scored five times before the fifth inning, capitalizing on Nick Hundley's first home run of the season, Brandon Belt's 10th and four-consecutive two-out hits in the fourth. Hundley snapped the Giants' 18-inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the second, launching a tworun shot into the left field stands with Aaron Hill aboard. Belt became the first Giant to reach double digits in home runs this season, leading off the fourth with a blast to the deep part of the yard in right center. After Hundley and Mac Williamson reached base on two-out singles later in the fourth, Blach provided his own run support by smacking a line drive single to center, driving in a run. Then, Denard Span made it four hits in a row, bringing in Williamson with an opposite-field double down the left field line. The Giants added a sixth run in the eighth when Hundley collected his third hit and third RBI of the game, scoring Belt with a two-out bouncer up the middle. The Giants entered the game having scored just six runs in their past four games. With his fourth-consecutive quality start, Blach (3-2), who's filling in for Madison Bumgarner in the Giants rotation, improved to 2-1 with a 1.87 ERA in five home starts this season. He allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but managed to quickly pitch his way out trouble, inducing double plays in the fourth and the sixth. Blach also did his best Bumgarner impression at plate, adding a single in the seventh to go 2 for 3 on the night with an RBI. The Braves scored a third run in the ninth off reliever Derek Law before closer Mark Melancon came in to record the last two outs and his 10th save of the season. NOTES Outfielder Jarrett Parker took on-field batting practice for the first time since he broke his right clavicle in April. The Giants expect the 28-year-old outfielder to begin a rehab assignment in about a week. Bruce Bochy is "hopeful" that Parker could make his return to the Giants lineup in three weeks. "We'll see where he's at a couple weeks into rehab," the Giants' manager said. Conor Gillaspie's recovery from back spasms has hit a setback. The Giants were expecting to activate Gillaspie from the 10-day disabled list at some point during their three-game set with the Braves this weekend, but the 29-year-old third baseman underwent an MRI procedure Saturday after experiencing back tightness while swinging a bat.

"Don't know the results yet," Bochy said. "But we'll get it evaluated once the doctors get here." Christian Arroyo finally got a much-needed break Saturday. Bochy was planning to give Arroyo, who is struggling through a prolonged slump, a day off in Chicago on Thursday, but he was forced to pencil the rookie infielder into the lineup because Eduardo Nunez tweaked a hamstring Wednesday night and couldn't go. Arroyo also played against the Braves on Friday because Bochy opted to sit second baseman Joe Panik against left-hander Jaimie Garcia. The rookie shortstop is hitless in his last 19 at bats and 5 for 46 (.109) over his past 13 games. He's batting.186 on the season. "He'll probably get a couple days off," Bochy said. Sacramento Bee Blach helps Giants snap 4-game skid with 6-3 win over Braves Paul Gackle SAN FRANCISCO--Ty Blach is making the most of his opportunity in San Francisco's rotation after ace Madison Bumgarner went down with an injury.

"Fastball, the slider and the change-up tonight, so they were ready for everything that was in the zone and they did what they had to do with it." Dickey (3-3) takes the mound for Atlanta in the series finale against Johnny Cueto (4-4). Yahoo Sports Giants RHP Cueto seeking bounce-back effort versus Braves Stats SAN FRANCISCO -- The injury-plagued San Francisco Giants hope they can put one potential issue behind them when Johnny Cueto takes the mound to face the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon. Cueto is coming off a career-worst, three-home run allowance against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, an effort the veteran blamed on a second blister that had sprouted on his right hand during a betweenstarts session in St. Louis. Cueto had been expected to help fill the void created by Madison Bumgarner's separated shoulder. But after winning four of his first six starts, he hasn't won any of his last four, including the most recent two in which he's been pounded for nine runs and 13 hits in 12 innings.

"It's not a case where we're pushing it," Giants manager Bruce Bochy claimed, insisting Cueto wouldn't be pitching Sunday if he weren't close to 100 percent. "He wants to pitch and he's battling it. He hasn't quite gotten over it." The Giants could help ease their starter's pain with another offensive effort like the one that produced a 6-3 win over the Braves on Saturday night. The nine-hit attack featured a pair of home runs, including a two-run shot by backup catcher Nick Hundley that was just the Giants' eighth of the season with at least one man aboard. Home runs have traditionally been a problem for Braves right-hander R.A. Dickey, who gets the call with Atlanta having a chance to win the series. The Braves took the opener of the three-game set 2-0 Friday night behind left-hander Jaime Garcia's gem. Dickey has allowed 24 or more home runs in five consecutive seasons. He appears well on his way to making it six straight, having been bombed for 11 already this year. Dickey is 2-1 with a 2.88 ERA in five career starts against the Giants. He's allowed just three homers in those games, one to Brandon Belt, who contributed a solo shot to Saturday's win, and two others to reserve outfielders (Gorkys Hernandez and Justin Ruggiano) who might not even play Sunday. Like Cueto, Dickey has struggled of late, having gone winless in his last four starts. The knuckleballer was last seen giving up 11 hits in six innings in a 6-5 win over Pittsburgh in which both teams finished with 15 hits. After watching his team struggle offensively in Saturday's loss to Giants left-hander Ty Blach, Braves manager Brian Snitker admitted he was looking forward to seeing a righty on Sunday. "That's only the fourth (lefty) starter we've faced all year," Snitker observed. "Guys like that can give you trouble. We haven't seen that." Cueto has just a 1-3 lifetime record and 3.86 ERA in seven starts against Atlanta. The Braves had entered Saturday's game on a nice offensive role. They'd won 10 of their previous 15 games by averaging 5.0 runs per contest. Atlanta had clubbed 49 extra-base hits over that 15-game stretch, then got a triple from Danny Santana and a double from Matt Kemp in Saturday's loss to raise the number to 51. The Braves haven't lost any of their last five series, winning three and splitting a pair.

CBS Sports Giants' Conor Gillaspie: Has MRI on Saturday RotoWire Staff Gillaspie (back) underwent an MRI after experiencing a back tightness while swinging a bat, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Gillaspie was initially hoping to return before June, though It's unclear if that will happen anymore. More should be known after the Giants release the results of his tests. CBS Sports Giants' Christian Arroyo: Gets scheduled rest RotoWire Staff Manager Bruce Bochy said Arroyo will get at least two days off, Alec Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Arroyo has endured a tough month at the plate thus far -- slashing just.180/.245/.258 across 24 games (98 plate appearances) -- prompting Bochy to give the youngster at least a couple days to catch his breath, clear his mind and work on some things. Look for Arroyo to rejoin the Giants lineup for Monday's series opener against the Nationals. CBS Sports Giants' Jarrett Parker: Hopes to return in two weeks RotoWire Staff Parker (shoulder) will take on-field batting practice Saturday for the first time since his injury, Alec Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Parker has been progressing well from a broken clavicle, as the 28-year-old was also seen running the bases and throwing in the outfield before Saturday's contest, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. Barring any setbacks, Parker will likely progress to a minor-league rehab assignment with the hopes of returning to the big club in a little over two weeks. CBS Sports Giants' Christian Arroyo: Takes seat Saturday RotoWire Staff Arroyo is not in the lineup Saturday against the Braves, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Arroyo is in the midst of an 0-for-19 slump over his last five games, so he'll head to the bench to clear his mind as Aaron Hill takes over at third base. CBS Sports Giants' Buster Posey: Heads to bench Saturday RotoWire Staff Posey is not in the lineup Saturday against the Braves, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
