Jays vs. Royals The Royals opened the season work in exciting fashion, plating four in the ninth win in the first of six meetings with the Jays... KC trails the all-time series with Toronto by a mark, but possesses a advantage in Kauffman Stadium...Kansas City has won eight of the last 11 regular season meetings in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 6/23 KC W, 5-4 Soria Loup *38,848 6/24 KC 6/25 KC Tor Tor Tor WALKING OFF TO.500--The Royals dug quite the hole to open the year, losing 20 of their first 30 games to start things off 10 games below the long climb back to even the slate was culminated last night with a 4-run ninth inning, capped by Whit Merrifield s 2-out, 2-run double into the left field corner to stake KC to its third walk-off win of the year, Merrifield, who about this time seven years ago delivered the walk-off hit that ended the final College World Series in Omaha s Rosenblatt Stadium by staking South Carolina to a win, recorded his first big league walk-off with the double in the ninth...trailing 4-1 entering the final frame, the Royals used a one-out double from Salvador Perez, then following a second out, a walk to Brandon Moss and then 2-out hits from Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon set the stage for Merrifield s thriller which brought the sellout gathering to his feet...jakob Junis worked the first 6.1 innings allowing two runs, but was extricated from the hook of a second straight loss by the ninth inning heroics, giving KC 10 wins in the last 12 games. A FRANCHISE FIRST--The sellout crowd of 38,848 witnessed a first in the 49-year history of Royals baseball, as Kansas City rallied from a three+ run deficit with two outs in ninth inning to win on a 9-inning walk-off...the last time KC rallied from three+ runs down and two outs in the ninth in non walk-off fashion was August 23, 1988 in old Arlington Stadium, when the Royals ambushed the Rangers for eight 2-out runs to turn a 7-3 deficit into an 11-7 win...in the ballpark today is one of the contributors of that inning, as current Jays broadcaster Pat Tabler actually made the second out in the frame, then later walked in his second plate appearance of the inning. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER--The three wins on this homestand have seen some late-inning magic by the Kansas City offense, starting on Monday night when the Royals plated a pair of seventh inning tallies to break a 2-2 tie and defeat the Red Sox, Wednesday s series winning knock came courtesy of an eighth inning grand slam by Salvador Perez, flipping a 4-2 deficit into an eventual 6-4 win...then there was last night when KC scored four 2-out runs in the ninth inning after entering the frame down it was the 21st comeback win for the Royals this year and the first in 30 tries when trailing after eight innings...the last time Kansas City pulled one out when trailing after eight was last September 24 when Detroit held a 4-2 lead entering the ninth and the Royals rallied for a 7-4 win. SOLID WORK IN JUNE--With consecutive come-from-behind wins, the Royals are now 14-6 in June, the best mark to this point among all American League clubs and the second best winning pct. in the Majors (.700)...the month began with KC taking two of three from the Indians here, then splitting a 4-game set against Houston, before going on the road to win series in San Diego (2-1), San Francisco (2-0) and Anaheim (3-1)...the Royals then returned home to take two of three from the Red Sox to open this stay, followed by last night s thriller...since the month began, the Royals are third in the A.L. in ERA (3.94)...KC started June eight games under.500 (22-30). ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch.
