HOZ AND MINOR WIN MAY HONORS--First baseman Eric Hosmer and left-handed reliever Mike Minor have been named Royals Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for May...Hosmer hit.367 (40-for-109), fourth best in the Majors and recorded his 1,000th career hit on Wednesday vs. Detroit, his 40th hit of the month, making him the first Royal to record 40 hits in May since Rey Sanchez in Hoz also led the Royals in on-base percentage (.421) and slugging (.560), reaching safely in 26 of 29 games...this is his ninth career Player of the Month award, breaking a tie with Joakim Soria, Billy Butler and Zack Greinke for third most, trailing only Alex Gordon and Mike Sweeney (13 each)...minor led the Royals with 16.0 innings of relief during the month, including a 14.1 scoreless-innings streak over 10 outings from May 4-26, in which he held opponents to a.109 average (5- for-46) with 19 K s...the Royals were 8-4 in the 12 games he pitched in, including his first two wins since 2014 (May 21 at Minnesota and May 26 at Cleveland)... this is Minor s first Pitcher of the Month award, becoming the first left-handed reliever to earn the honor since Ron Mahay in July of 2008 CENTRAL STRUGGLES--Wednesday s loss to the Tigers dropped Kansas City to 7-17 within the A.L. Central, a far cry from the mark the club enjoyed during the 2016 season...the Royals went 7-9 against the Central in May, which while still below break even, it was a marked improvement over the 0-8 April in intradivisional play...after this series with the Tribe, Kansas City will not play another A.L. Central foe until traveling Detroit on June the A.L. West will take up eight of the next 13 games starting on Monday with the Houston Astros hitting town for four games...that series and a 4-game stop in Anaheim on June will be sandwiched around the next Interleague experience, which will consist of a 3-game stop in San Diego next weekend and 2-game set in San Francisco.
