TWO-OUT MAGIC RETURNS--Absent from the first two contests of this series, Kansas City s two-out offense broke out Saturday, producing the club s first two tallies on Kendrys Morales two-run double in the opening frame...the Royals went 5-for-13 (.385) with two outs last night, after going 2-for-16 (.125) when down to their final out in the first two games...the Red Sox, who have also been one of the top two-out producers in the A.L. this season, added a pair of two-out runs, giving them seven in the series thus far...kansas City continues to lead the Majors with a.280 team batting average in two-out situations, while the BoSox are next at kc is second in the A.L. in twoout slugging pct. (.428), while the Sox hold the top spot at among the top individual two-out hitters in the A.L., the Royals boast three of the top six with Lorenzo Cain (.388) leading the league, followed by Eric Hosmer (.349), who is fourth and Morales (.329), who is sixth...hosmer (58), Morales (55) and Cain (52) rank second, third and fifth, respectively in two-out hits...morales, who ranks third in the A.L. in overall RBI (85) has driven more than half of those in with two outs, leading the Majors with 44. A ROOM WITH A VIEW--Kansas City enters this afternoon with a 12 1/2-game advantage in the A.L. Central, which is the biggest lead of any division in the Majors...the lead peaked at 14 1/2 prior to the start of the current series, the largest KC has experienced since 1980, when that eventual A.L. championship squad saw its lead expand to as many as 20 games as late as August 31, today marks the 104th day the Royals have been in first place this year...kansas City peaked at 27 games over.500 for the first time since the end of the 1980 season (97-65)...KC s longest winning streak this year was a 7-0 start to the season, while the longest drought has been four games twice. QUICK STAY STARTS MONDAY--The Royals will return home tonight and see the Baltimore Orioles for the first time since last year s ALCS, as KC will host the O s in a 4-game homestand starting Monday night...kansas City will later travel to Camden Yards on September for a 3-game weekend stop...along with sweeping the Birds in the League Championship series, the Royals held a 4-3 edge in regular season meetings in 2014, taking two of three in Baltimore and splitting a four-game set at Kauffman, by winning the final two contests in the middle of May. TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Edinson Volquez (11-7, 3.20) vs. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (7-5, 4.48) Career Career Edinson Volquez vs. Red Sox Major League Record 11-7 (3.20 ERA) Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Royals Major League Record 7-5 (4.48 ERA) EDINSON VOLQUEZ closes this six-game road trip, making his team-leading 26th start of the season, his 211th career starting assignment and 216th overall appearance...he faces Boston for the second time this season and fourth of his career...he signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Royals on December 29, DOMINANT IN RETURN TO CINCY--Edinson returned to his old stomping grounds Tuesday night, tossing 6.0 strong innings against Cincinnati, taking a no-decision in a game the Royals pulled out 3-1 in 13 innings...the veteran righty, who pitched for the Reds from , allowed just one run on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts, throwing 112 pitches...the only run he allowed came from the second hitter of the game, when Eugenio Suarez hit a solo homer down the left field line in the first inning...from that point on, Volky allowed just three singles, retiring 12 of the next 13 men he faced following the Suarez home run...he pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, keeping the score 1-0 and allowing Ben Zobrist to hit a ninth-inning home run to send the game to extra-innings...volquez recorded seven strikeouts, his highest total since fanning eight against another former team, Pittsburgh, on July 22. KEEP ROLLIN --Volquez continues to be the Royals most consistent pitcher this season as he enters today as the leader in wins (11), innings pitched (152.0), ERA (3.20), strikeouts (114) and quality starts (14) among the team s starters...he s recorded seven victories since June 10, which are tied for third-most in the A.L. in that span...during that time, he s also posted a 3.15 ERA (30 ER in 85.2 IP), while throwing the 10th-most innings...he s been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last 14 months as since June 20 of last season, Volky is tied for the fourth-best winning percentage (.714) in the Majors, going 20-8 with a 2.63 ERA, which ranks eighth, and a.233 opponents average. SWEET ESCAPE--Edinson was once again at his best with runners in scoring position, holding the Reds hitless in three at-bats in those situations...the opposition has hit just.178 (24-for-135) with RISP against Volquez this season, ranking him second among qualifying A.L. hurlers...he s given up just five extra-base hits (all doubles) in those situations for the second-lowest opponents slugging percentage (.215) with RISP in MLB. AFTERNOON DELIGHT---Volquez brings a 2.43 ERA (11 ER in 40.2 IP) and a.195 opponents batting average in his seven daytime starts into today s contest... his ERA is the 10th-lowest among qualifying A.L. pitchers, while his 1.11 WHIP ranks 13th among pitchers that have thrown at least 40.0 daytime innings...however, despite those gaudy numbers, Edinson is just 1-2 in his afternoon starts. RED SOX---Volquez makes his second start of the year against the Red Sox, earning a 7-4 triumph at The K on June 20...in that outing, he allowed four runs on eight hits over 5.1 frames...he s posted a 3.44 ERA (7 ER in 18.1 IP) in three career starts against Boston, with four walks and 15 strikeouts. ON THE ROAD--Edinson makes his 13th road start this afternoon, entering at 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA with 27 walks and 62 strikeouts in 72.1 innings...he s gone 1-2 in his last four outings away from Kauffman Stadium, despite a 2.96 ERA (8 ER in 24.1 IP) in that span...volky is with a 4.57 ERA in 103 career road starts (105 outings). 2 Pitching Notes Tomorrow s Starter - Kris Medlen = Kris will make his first start of the year and first since coming back from Tommy John surgery, which kept him out of action for nearly 18 months...he s made seven appearances with the Royals out of the bullpen this year, earning his first win last Tuesday, in KC s 3-1 triumph in 13 innings. = Medlen s last outing came here in Boston on Thursday night, when he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in relief of Danny Duffy...since allowing four runs in his first outing back from the disabled list on July 20, Kris has recorded 11.0 shutout frames, allowing just six hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts. = His last start came as a member of the Atlanta Braves on September 27, he tossed 8.0 scoreless innings in that outing, blanking the Phillies, over his last six starts during the 2013 season, he went 5-0 with an 0.84 ERA (4 ER in 43.0 IP)...he earned N.L.
