Chicago Cubs (1-1) vs. Miami Marlins (1-1) March 31, 2018 Marlins Park Game No. 3 Road Game No. 3 RHP Yu Darvish (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (0-0, 0.00) THAT S CLASSIFIED AS A LONG NIGHT AT THE YARD: The Chicago Cubs tonight play the third of four games against the Miami Marlins after last night dropping a 2-1, 17-inning marathon that lasted five hours, 18 minutes both teams plated single runs in the third before being held scoreless until the 17th inning when Miami s Miguel Rojas singled home Brian Anderson to bring the marathon to an end. The 17-inning affair came in the teams second game of the season according to Elias, the only instance in major league history of teams playing a game as long as 17 innings in either their first of second game of a campaign came on April 9, 1969, when the Royals defeated the Twins, 4-3 in 17 innings, in what was the second game of the season for each team (and the second in franchise history for the Royals). DARVISH DEBUT: Righthander Yu Darvish tonight makes his Cubs debut after signing a six-year deal with the club in February since 2012 with the Rangers and Dodgers, he ranks first among all pitchers in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (11.04), and ranks fourth in both hits allowed per 9.0 innings (7.29) and opponent batting average against (.219). Darvish tonight becomes the eighth Japanese-born player to appear for the Cubs and the fifth pitcher he will join right-handed pitchers Kyuji Fujikawa and Koji Uehara, left-handed pitchers Hisanori Takahashi and Tsuyoshi Wada, infielder Munenori Kawasaki and outfielders Kosuke Fukudome and So Taguchi. Darvish looks to become the first starting pitcher to earn a victory in his Cubs debut since, well, just last July José Quintana did so, July 16 at Baltimore, a gem in which he spun 7.0 shutout frames in an 8-0 victory after coming over from the White Sox three days earlier. DOING YEOMAN S WORK: Cubs reliever Eddie Butler last night tossed 7.0 innings of relief after entering the game with one on and two out in the 10th Butler held Miami scoreless through the 16th inning, and threw 90 pitches, before he was replaced by Brandon Morrow with two on and two out in the 17th. All told, Butler allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out five in his 7.0 innings he s the first Cubs reliever to toss at least 7.0 innings and surrender no more than four hits and one run since Ray Burris on September 23, 1973 at Philadelphia Burris spun 7.0 shutout frames, allowing four hits, in a 9-7 setback. In fact, Butler is the first Cubs reliever to go at least 7.0 innings since Scott Sanderson tossed 8.0 innings, August 6, 1989 at Pittsburgh in a 5-4, 18-inning defeat. PENMANSHIP: Last night s run allowed in the 17th inning snapped a seasonopening 15.2-scoreless innings streak by Chicago s bullpen that s the longest scoreless innings streak by the Cubs bullpen to begin a campaign since 1990, when the relief corps strung together 20.0-scoreless thanks to Elias Sports Bureau.
