Following this contest, the Cubs close out the first half of the season with a three-game set in Pittsburgh, beginning tomorrow evening. This four-game homestand starts a stretch in which the team plays 18 of 26 games at Wrigley Field from July 4-August 3 in fact, 20 of those 26 games are in Chicago, as this stretch includes two games at U.S. Cellular Field against the White Sox, July Despite one win in their last six home games, the Cubs are at Wrigley Field this season, the best home record in the National League and fourth-best in all of baseball the Cubs have played only 39 home games, the secondfewest in the National League (Colorado, 38). FIRST HALF NUMBERS: With four games to go before the All-Star break, Chicago s 116 home runs are one shy of the franchise record in a season s first half the team belted 117 homers leading up to the Mid-Summer Classic in both 1987 and The Cubs 441 runs scored are their third-most runs plated prior to the All-Star break, trailing only the 507 runs scored in the first half of 2008 and the 477 runs in 1969 Chicago s.347 on-base percentage is fifth-best prior to the All-Star break, trumped only in 1937 (.362), 1945 (.361), 2008 (.360) and 1936 (.353). Chicago s 3.19 team ERA is currently its fifth-lowest prior to the All-Star Game, and its lowest since 1992 (3.16). A BEVY OF ALL-STARS: The Cubs have a major league-high seven players representing the N.L. All-Star Team next week in San Diego 3B Kris Bryant, OF Dexter Fowler, 1B Anthony Rizzo, SS Addison Russell and 2B Ben Zobrist were voted in by the fans while Jake Arrieta was named to the club by the player vote and Jon Lester joined the squad as a selection of manager Terry Collins. The Cubs are just the second team in major league history to field the starting infield, joining the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals (1B Bill White, 2B Julian Javier, SS Dick Groat, 3B Ken Boyer). Chicago has never had five players named to start the All-Star Game and are the first team to do so since the 1985 San Diego Padres. IT S A START: The Cubs starting rotation has a major-league best 2.89 ERA (167 ER/519.2 IP), ahead of the Mets (3.32) and Nationals (3.41), despite a bump in the road with a 9.33 ERA (28 ER/27.0 IP) in the first six games this month. Adam Warren yesterday got the start for Chicago, allowing just one run in 5.0 innings, to become just the sixth starting pitcher used by the club this season this is the fourth-latest (game No. 84) the franchise has used a sixth starting pitcher in 2003, Chicago used a sixth starter for the first time in game no. 99 CUBS RECORD 2016 Overall: At Wrigley Field: On the Road: April: May: June July All-Time Since 1876:... 10,660-10,162 At Wrigley Field (since 1916):...4,187-3,699 Leading Entering 6th: Tied Entering 6th: Trailing Entering 6th: Leading Entering 7th: Tied Entering 7th: Trailing Entering 7th: Leading Entering 8th: Tied Entering 8th: Trailing Entering 8th: Leading Entering 9th: Tied Entering 9th: Trailing Entering 9th: Scoring First: One-Run Games: Two-Run Games: Extra-Inning Games: Scoring Four or More: Scoring Fewer Than Four: Out-Hitting Opponents: Hit Totals Equal: Out-Hit by Opponents: Hit at Least One HR: Hit Two or More HR: Playing Errorless Ball: Committing at Least One Error: that was the latest the team hadn t used a sixth starter since way back in 1891 (99th game) and 1892 (102nd game), the final two years prior to the mound being moved to 60-feet, six-inches thanks to Ed Hartig. ABOUT THE RECORD: With a mark, the Cubs have the second-best record in the majors (San Francisco, 54-33/.621), yet are just in their last 30 games starting just over a month ago June 5 however, the Cubs have only lost one game of their division lead during this stretch (from 9.5 games on June 5 to 8.5 games today) going back a bit further, the Cubs have seen their division lead grow from 5 games on May 24 to 8.5 games today. ROSTER RUMINATIONS: The Cubs enter tonight with their 25-man roster featuring six players who were not members of the Opening Day squad: pitchers Carl Edwards Jr. and Spencer Patton, and position players Albert Almora Jr., Javier Baez, Jeimer Candelario and Willson Contreras. Chicago has utilized five rookies, all joining the team within roughly the last month Albert Almora Jr. was the first rookie utilized in the team s 57th game on June 7 in Philadelphia this was by far the latest the Cubs have gone into a season before using a rookie, as at least one had played for Chicago within the first 20 games in each of its previous campaigns thanks to Ed Hartig. 20/20 VISION: Anthony Rizzo has hit 20 homers thus far and joins Kris Bryant (25 homers) as the only N.L. teammates, and just one of four big league duos, with at least 20 homers apiece they join Baltimore s Mark Trumbo (26 homers) and Chris Davis (21), Seattle s Robinson Cano (20) and Nelson Cruz (22), and Toronto s Edwin Encarnacion (22) and Josh Donaldson (22) as the lone major league teammates with 20 homers. Rizzo, who hit 20 homers prior to the All-Star Break in 2014, joins Hall of Famer Billy Williams as the only two left-handed hitters in franchise to reach 20 homers before the break in multiple years Williams turned the trick in 1970 (26 homers) and 1972 (22). Bryant and Rizzo are also the first set of Cubs teammates to hit at least 20 homers prior to the All-Star Break since 2005 (Derrek Lee with 27 homers, Aramis Ramirez with 20 homers). Since the start of the 2015 campaign, Rizzo and Bryant have hit 51 homers apiece, tied for fourth-most in the N.L. Nolan Arenado (65), Bryce Harper (60) and Carlos Gonzalez (58) make up the top three. PRODUCE SECTION: Kris Bryant s 25 home runs lead the N.L. and are second in the majors, one behind of Baltimore s Mark Trumbo (26) Bryant has homered in four of his last seven games, and scored 13 runs in his last 10 games Bryant s 68 runs scored lead the N.L. and are seven more than second-best Wil Myers 61 runs. Overall this season, Anthony Rizzo ranks among N.L. leaders in OPS (3rd,.962), slugging percentage (7th,.560), on-base percentage (3rd,.402), and homers (t-5th, 20) his 4.77 at-bats per RBI is the third-best ratio in the N.L. IT S GOOD FOR ABSOLUTELY SOMETHING: According to STATS, Inc., Kris Bryant s 4.3 WAR leads all N.L. players on offense Bryant is second in the N.L. with 64 RBI while Anthony Rizzo is tied for fourth with 61. Bryant and Rizzo became the first Cubs players to reach 60 RBI by the end of June since Derrek Lee took 65 RBI into July in 2005 Kris is the sixth player in franchise history to reach 25 homers by the All-Star Break, the first since Derrek Lee (27) in The Cubs have multiple players with 60 RBI by the All-Star Break for the first time since 1970 when Billy Williams (80 RBI) and the late Jim Hickman (63 RBI) did so.
