Burt reached base six total times and scored the winning run in game one of Saturday s doubleheader as the Wilmington Blue Rocks split their twinbill with the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. The Blue Crew took the opener, 4-3, and dropped the nightcap, 5-0. It was the sixth time Wilmington has been blanked this season and the club has now dropped six of its last seven games away from the friendly confines of Frawley Stadium. WELCOME HOME: North Carolina native D.J. Burt put on quite a performance in his home state on Saturday. Burt worked four walks, doubled, stole two bases and scored the winning run in game one of the twin bill. He added a pair of singles in the nightcap. The 21-year-old infielder leads the Blue Rocks and is second in the Carolina League with 31 steals. He also ranks third on the team with 19 doubles and with an on-base percentage of.350 HELLO THERE STRANGER: Wilmington is making its only trip of the season to Five County Stadium in Zebulon, North Carolina. It is one of four Carolina League stadiums where the Rocks are playing just one series this season (Winston-Salem s BB&T Ball Park, Myrtle Beach s TicketReturn.com Field and Buies Creek s Jim Perry Stadium are the others). Thursday s game was the Blue Crew s first meeting with Carolina since April 12 when the clubs wrapped up a three-game series at Frawley Stadium. Wilmington dropped two of three that week, with each of the games decided by just a single score. Thursday s series-opener was also decided by a single score as was game one of the doubleheader on Saturday. THE NEW GUY DEBUTS: With Chase Vallot banged up and Nate Esposito going to Triple-A after Wednesday s game, the Rocks welcomed catcher Nick Hutchins to their roster on Friday. Hutchins made his Advanced-A debut in the nightcap of Saturday s doubleheader. He singled in his first at bat and finished the night 1-for-3. Hutchins was a 27th round pick by the Royals this June out of Southern Illinois University. He made his professional debut this month and played nine games in the Appalachian League for the Burlington Royals. Half of his ten hits with the B-Royals were extra-base knocks and he added four RBI. Vallot was forced to depart Thursday s game in the second inning. Vallot worked a walk in his only plate appearance in the top of the second and got as far as third base, but after being stranded there, he did not come out defensively in the bottom of the inning. The youngest man on the Blue Rocks roster has put together a solid first year at the Advanced-A level. Vallot leads the team in homers (12), doubles (22) and walks (64). He is also the active team-leader in on-base percentage (.380) despite leading the league with 126 strikeouts. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 40 one-run games so far in No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 34 single-score affairs. The Rocks are now in such contests. Wilmington opened the season just 4-13 in one-run games, then won 17 of their next 19, then dropped the last three, before Saturday s single-tally triumph. FAST STARTERS: The Rocks have started most games off on the right foot in July. In the 25 games played during the month, the Blue Crew have delivered first-inning runs in 15 of those contests. Overall the first frame has been their most successful of the season, with the Rocks scoring 67 runs in their first at bat. That is more than any other inning. RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY: The Blue Rocks have had Mother Nature wreak havoc on their schedule during the tail-end of the month of July. Wilmington has endured rain delays five times in the last eight days. The Blue Crew had a game rained out last weekend at Frederick and then endured two separate rain delays during last Sunday s doubleheader against the Keys. Wilmington then waited almost two hours on Friday night before rain forced the postponement of that game. It set up a doubleheader on Saturday which light rain delayed the start by 30 minutes as well. Saturday s twinbill was the Rocks sixth of the season and marked the third time that they have split a pair. Today s Blue Rocks Starters WIL: RHP Jace Vines (0-0, 7.71 ERA) vs. CAR: LHP Kodi Medeiros (3-8, 4.78 ERA) It has been quite a whirlwind for Jace Vines over the last halfdecade. In high school Vines was primarily a position player who actually turned to pitching only after he lost his starting job at second base. Vines tossed just 20 innings as a senior though and was forced to walk-on at Weatherford Junior College where he red-shirted and served as the team s announcer. Vines then moved on to Tyler Junior College where he flourished. In his one and only season the Prosper, Texas native was tabbed NJCAA Division III Pitcher of the Year and earned NJCAA All-America First Team recognition. He posted a 10-1 record with a 1.77 ERA, 68 strikeouts just seven walks and won the NJCAA Division III National Championship. The effort earned him a scholarship at Texas A&M where he spent one season before being drafted by the Royals in the fourth round last June. After signing for a reported $375,000 Vines made 12 appearances with the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League. He opened this season in Low-A where he was named a mid-season South Atlantic League All Star and went 9-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 19 games (14 starts) with Lexington. He allowed four runs in the first inning of his Advanced-A debut, but then held Salem off the scoreboard over the next 3.2 frames of a no-decision earlier in the week. Kodi Medeiros will make his 21st appearance and his 13th start of the season for Carolina today. It is his first outing against the Blue Rocks. Medeiros is the highest-drafted player ever to be selected out of high school from the state of Hawaii. He was the 12th overall pick in the 2014 draft, receiving a reported $2.55 million signing bonus from the Brewers. He spent the entire 2016 campaign with Brevard County and finished the year at 4-12 with a 5.93 ERA over 23 games (22 starts). He also finished the year with 64 strikeouts and 63 walks over 85.0 innings pitched. His 63 walks were the fourth most in the Florida State League. Medeiros began this season back in Advanced-A and has been in and out of the Mudcats starting rotation. He pitched out of the bullpen in eight of his first 14 outings and has started in each of his last six games. Medeiros is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA as a reliever and 0-7 with a 6.12 ERA as a starter. His batting average against rises by 66 points in the rotation (from.190 to.256). The Brewers and the Atlanta Braves, who were the parent club of the Carolina Mudcats in , swapped affiliates. The Braves now have their Class-A Advanced affiliate in the Florida State League and are one of the new teams in Minor League Baseball, the Florida Fire Frogs. Prior to the Braves short tenure, the Mudcats served as the Cleveland Indians satellite from The organization has been part of the Carolina League since Skipper Joe Ayrault has stayed with the Brewers system during the affiliation switch and will be at the helm of Milwaukee s Advanced-A squad for his sixth overall season and first with the Mudcats. Starting the Milwaukee era, the Mudcats have a prospect laden roster with eight players ranked on MLB.com s Pipeline updated top 30 Brewers prospect list. Most notably, outfielder Corey Ray (#2/#69 in Top 100) who was the Brewers top pick in 2016, shortstop Isan Diaz (#6), outfielder Trent Clark (#6), and third baseman Lucas Erceg (#10) are all ranked in the top ten. Ray showed his his combination of hitting and athletic ability, and he backed up that title by hitting 15 homers with 44 steals as a junior with Louisville. The Brewers made him the fifth-overall pick in June, gave him $4,125, the largest bonus in club history -- and then sent him to the Florida State League with the now defunct Brevard County Manatees to speed up his track to the bigs. Diaz earned the Brewer s Minor League Player of the Year Award after posting a.264 batting average with 20 home runs and 75 RBI in 135 games with Low-A Wisconsin a year ago. This season, the two teams will play just two series against each other. Carolina took the first series between the two teams in Wilmington in the second week of April with all three games decided by a single run. Last season, the two teams played five games against each other through the first month of the season and met 19 total times. The Blue Rocks took the season head-to-head match-up 11-8.

VINES ON HIS JOURNEY: In high school, I didn t pitch much my senior year and didn t pitch any my junior year, so I had no (college) offers. I was throwing around so nobody really wanted me. Luckily, God led me to Weatherford Junior College where I walked on. I learned a lot from a really good pitching coach and I red-shirted (my first year). I needed to grow stronger and bigger. I graduated high-school at 6-foot, 185 pounds and by the time I was done with my first year (of college) I was six-foot-two, 235 pounds. I was a late bloomer. After that year, they didn t ask me to come back, but they were really helpful in getting me to a new junior college. Tyler Junior College had a lot of success; they won a national championship, so my coach called them. I got a tryout with them and they wanted me to come. Even through my first few months at Tyler Junior College, I didn t do very well. I was throwing about 86-88, which was respectable, but not what Division One colleges want. All of a sudden, I came back from Christmas break and God opened some doors. I was throwing 90-91, touching 92 and had a really successful year. By the end of the year, we actually won the national championship. I was named the Division 3 Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-American. HEADED TO COLLEGE STATION: Vines thought his next step would be Baylor, but after committing to the Bears the school fired its head coach, leaving Vines fate up in the air. He was advised to wait until after draft when more schools would have more scholarship money available. It turned out to be sage council. The offers came pouring in. All of a sudden these big schools like Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, TCU, Arkansas started calling and they were dream schools for me, Vines said. Both of my parents went to Texas A&M and they graduated there so it was an easy decision once they offered me. We started off the next year ranked No. 1 in the country. It was a perfect fit for me. Which is something he says he s known since he was a kid. (My parents) brain-washed me (about Texas A&M). Everyone jokes in Texas that Texas A&M is a cult, which isn t true but is fun to go along with. Ever since I was little, my parents bled maroon and we hated the University of Texas. A&M wasn t that good in sports when I was growing up, but now it seems like they are good in everything. It was unbelievable for my parents to come back to school and watch me play on that field. That was such a cool experience for me to do that. Vines younger brother will attend Texas A&M (as a regular student, not an athlete) next year. JACE VINES SCOUTS JACE VINES: I rely on my sinker. It s my best pitch and is anywhere from I have added a four-seam fastball, which has allowed me to work to my glove side of the plate. I really only throw my two-seam to my arm side, so against righties I do pretty well, but lefties I struggle with. I found a changeup that has finally worked for me. My off-speed has really been a work-in-progress this year. I am hoping to really own that in the offseason. I have a fosh-changeup which is almost a splitter-type changeup. It has split action and I have thrown it well lately. I just went out there and felt comfortable and enjoyed myself. I honestly had no pressure on myself and that s the way I should play here too which is what I m going to try to do. It was enjoyable... The postgame spread was unbelievable. You get big leaguers buying the spread and it is steak and lobster for dinner which was very awesome. The field was incredible. There was a ton more fans I m not saying we have a bad fan base, but it s a step away from the big leagues and kids are going crazy for you. It was cool to be around older guys who have been there or guys that are close to being there. The league itself was very cool. I met one of my teammates from Virginia, Chris Taylor, he got traded to the Dodgers and we were playing them during the six games I was there and it was good to see him. It s a whole different atmosphere. There s 35-year-old guys pitching to you and you do one thing wrong and they know what that weakness it, they can repeatedly make that pitch so it definitely was a big jump but definitely awesome...it s definitely a big thing (playing near hometown). There s a lot of ups and downs, especially if you get homesick, which I haven t gotten that much in my career so far. It s definitely a blessing to have your family come out.

(I m just) coming up here and adjusting to High-A ball, figuring out how everything works out here, the system they have going and being able to fit in...(on injury earlier in the season) I got hurt in (Low-A) Lexington, pulled my hamstring. I went down to Arizona (Rookie League) for a while, rehabbed it. I took that rehab processes really seriously so I could get back on the field. I thought I would end up going back to Lexington to keep on playing, but they ended up asking me to come up (to Wilmington) and hop in the lineup. Like I said, I took that rehab process pretty seriously. I guess leg injuries aren t too much to mess around with and I want to be able to stay on the field and try to contribute to the team...i had Tommy John surgery, but that was back in college. In my professional career, the (hamstring injury) was the first injury I ve had. My first leg injury as well, so it was kind of new to me; the steps, the process to get through it. A little bit of prayer and a little bit of work with our trainers, I m able to get back on the field. (On seeing familiar faces with the Rocks) I think it makes that transition to a different level of ball easier. You are not so in awe of everything that is going on. You are realizing you are really cool with the guys that are around you and you fit in with them so it makes that transition easier, a lot more fun and less hectic...i think what led to the success (with Idaho Falls) was me buying into the process that these guys told me to buy into when they first drafted me. It was kind of new to me how they did everything around here. The offseason and prepping myself before games, staying up the middle and being able to go the other way, not necessarily pull the ball so much, just try to get myself on base, let my legs work and do what it can for the team. I think that helped me out a lot. It took a lot of stress and pressure off of me at the plate... I wouldn t say (stealing) is the name of my game. I definitely want to get on and be able to score runs, put myself into a position where guys get pitches that they can drive and make the pitcher have to work when I m on base. Stealing bases helps me out, helps the team out and I just want to do whatever I can to help the team win.
