Two-time defending champion USC was chosen by the coaches as the league favorite, followed by Arizona State, Stanford, California, Arizona, UCLA, Washington, Oregon State and Washington State. FLORIDA STATE VISIT TO SUNKEN DIAMOND UP NEXT FOR CARDINAL Stanford will begin a seven-game homestand when No. 4 Florida State visits Sunken Diamond next Friday-Sunday, February 7-9 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm). Stanford and Florida State are tied 7-7 in the overall series after the Cardinal took two-of-three games in Tallahassee last year (9-3, 15-11, 6-7). Stanford swept the Seminoles the last time the teams played at Sunken Diamond (February 9-11, 2001; 6-2, 5-2, 8-2). OFFENSIVE REPORT Stanford hit.319 in its season-opening two-game series versus Santa Clara, while picking up nine extra-base hits (five doubles, one triple, three homers) and four stolen bases. The Cardinal had 15 of its 23 hits in the series-opener. Stanford scored 12 runs in the two games for a 6.0 runs per game average and left 13 runners on base in each game. Danny Putnam leads the club in virtually every offensive category with a.714 (5-7) batting average, two homers, three RBI, four runs scored and five hits. He is also one of five Stanford players to double versus the Broncos. John Mayberry, Jr. picked up the team s only triple in the two games, while Brian Hall leads the club with two stolen bases. PITCHING REPORT Stanford posted a stellar 1.00 ERA by giving up just two earned runs in the two games versus the Broncos. The Cardinal picked up its first shutout of the season in last Sunday s 5-0 win and came within one out of recording the ninth no-hitter in school history. The Cardinal used just four pitchers in the two games. Starters John Hudgins and Tim Cunningham earned victories, while relievers Ryan McCally and Matt Manship picked up saves. The Cardinal staff held Santa Clara hitters to a.119 batting average and recorded 14 strikeouts in 18.0 innings. DEFENSIVE REPORT Stanford was flawless in the field during the two-game series versus Santa Clara for a fielding percentage, handling all 77 of its chances without an error. John Mayberry, Jr. recorded 25 putouts at first base in the two games, while Tobin Swope leads the club with eight assists. Stanford did not turn a double play in either game.

The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 20 times in the its first 26 seasons under Marquess. Marquess began the 2003 season ranked 10th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches. Marquess has compiled his entire career record of (.672) at Stanford, needing just five more victories to reach 1100 and six to move into the top 20 on the all-time victory list. He began the season ranked 21st in all-time victories and 45th on the winning percentage list. Marquess became the 23rd coach in the history of NCAA Division I baseball to reach the 1000-win mark with a 6-2 victory over Florida State in a game played on February 9, He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times (1985, 87, 88) and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions (1983, 85, 87, 90, 94, 97, 98, 99). The Cardinal has posted winning seasons in 25 times of the first 26 season under his leadership and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 20 times in the last 22 years. Stanford has had 104 professional baseball draft picks in the past 18 seasons, including 13 first round selections in the last 16 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford s 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization. COMMENTS FROM MARK MARQUESS (On Cal State Fullerton) I m expecting to face one of the top five teams in the country. They might have the best pitching staff in college baseball this year. Wes Littleton is one of the premier aces in the nation and Chad Cordero is one of the top relievers. They also return a lot of position players from last year and have some talented young freshmen players. They will be one of the better teams we play all season, if not the best. (On the Stanford-Cal State Fullerton rivalry) It s a very good and friendly rivalry. We have a great deal of respect for each others programs. They re always tough and have great baseball tradition. They are used to winning and this year they are even much more talented and experienced than they have been in the last two or three years. (On the recent Santa Clara series) Both teams played excellent defensively and pitched well in both games of the series. I was very impressed with the way we hit in the first game as well. (On the near no-hitter versus Santa Clara) Obviously, we would have liked to have picked up the no-hitter, but I think it would have been more meaningful if it was just one pitcher. It was a bit disappointing to have come that close, but the main thing was to win the game and get the shutout. STANFORD COACHING STAFF Dean Stotz begins his 27th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his fourth season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis is in his fourth season as Stanford s pitching coach, while Dave Nakama is in his fourth year overall as a Stanford assistant coach and is in the second year of his second stint as a Cardinal assistant. He assists with all aspects of the game and serves as Stanford s first base coach.
