2 Coaching Staff REX PETERS Head Coach 8th Year Cal State Fullerton 89 MATT VAUGHN Associate Head Coach 18th Year UC Davis 92 Few coaches enjoyed a more auspicious start to a career than Rex Peters has at UC Davis. In 2003, he guided the Aggies to a season and their first NCAA Div. II postseason berth since UC Davis swept through the West Region tournament highlighted by back-to-back shutout victories and advanced to the national tournament for only the second time in school history. For his part, Peters was honored as the ABCA/Diamond Sports West Region Coach of the Year. Then the following year as if in defiance to baseball s notorious sophomore jinx Peters struck again. The Aggies finished with a record, including a 32-7 ledger in the program s final year with the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Although no longer eligible for postseason play as part of its transition to Division I status, UC Davis finished atop the conference standings by better than a seven-game margin. Along the way, the Aggies enjoyed school-record streaks of 16 straight victories and 20 consecutive conference wins. Since then, Peters charge has been to guide the Aggie program through its transition to official Division I status and membership in the tough Big West Conference. In 2008, the Aggies went and earned a berth in the NCAA Regional at Stanford. The season featured three different series sweeps and three victories against region rival Stanford. Peters arrived at the UC Davis program after spending the previous nine seasons as head coach at Chapman University in Southern California, where he compiled a overall record. He led the Panthers to three appearances in the NCAA Division III College World Series, including a third-place finish in Peters, the winningest coach in Chapman history both in terms of wins and percentage led the Panthers to the NCAA West Regional five times and three times was named West Region Coach of the Year. Additionally, he coached six All- Americans, two Academic All-Americans, nine Academic All-District players and 29 All-Region selections. Combining his Chapman credits with his mark at UC Davis, Peters now owns a career win-loss record of (.569). He posted his 400th career victory in the Aggies March 15, 2008 doubleheader sweep against Santa Clara. Prior to his head coaching duties, Peters served one season as the Panthers assistant coach under Gary Henderson. Peters had spent the previous four years playing in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization after being drafted by the club in the 24th round of the 1989 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. While in the Dodgers system, Peters advanced as high as Double-A San Antonio before beginning his coaching career. In 1989, his first season in professional baseball, he was named the MVP for the Salem Dodgers. Peters graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1989 with his bachelor s in physical education. He was an honorable mention All-American for the Titans, helping lead them to a third-place finish at the 1988 NCAA Division I College World Series. He earned his master s degree in education, with an emphasis in physical education, from Azusa Pacific University in The veteran of the Aggie baseball staff, Matt Vaughn enters his 18th season with the program, now as associate head coach. He has been an integral part of the Aggies success in that time, including two trips to the Division II College World Series (1995 and 2003) and one to the Division I postseason (2008). During his career, Vaughn s duties have included development of the Aggie pitching staff, recruiting and the numerous day-to-day duties of running a collegiate baseball program. In his UC Davis tenure, Vaughn has coached 31 players who have gone on to sign professional contracts, including 18 pitchers. Ten Aggies have earned a total of 12 All-America honors and three have been named West Region Pitchers of the Year. In 2004, one of his protegés Michael Potter captured California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year honors. In Vaughn s tenure as pitching coach, five of his pitchers have been selected as conference pitcher of the year. In 1997, in a national setting, Vaughn was one of six coaches named to the USA Baseball support staff for its 1997 National Team Trials in Tampa, Fla., where he assisted in player evaluation and development. Internationally, Vaughn spent two summers working for Major League Baseball International in Europe. In the summer of 1992, he served as a baseball envoy to Czechoslovakia and Poland. Then in 1994, he was the pitching coach for the Great Britain National Team as they played in the European B Pool Championships. Vaughn pitched for the Aggies from , winning nine games while starting 26 and relieving in 11 others. He was an honorable mention All-NCAC selection his senior year and won his last four decisions as an Aggie, including his final three starts. Vaughn graduated from UC Davis in 1992 with a degree in biological sciences. He received his master s degree in management from National University in He and his wife, Dana, were married on New Year s Eve, They have a son, Jackson, and a daughter, Casey. Schifano s primary duties include coaching the infielders and serving as the third base coach during games. He also assists with baserunning, hitting and recruiting. During his time at Los Gatos, the team accumulated 90 wins over four seasons and won a Central Coast Section title in Schifano enjoyed a stellar collegiate career with the Aggies from During that time he was a three-time All-Northern California Athletic Conference first-team selection, adding two All-West Regiono awards and a third-team ABCA All-America nod as a senior. He was a member of the 1995 team that won a regional championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II College World Series under legendary Aggie coach Phil Swimley. He was also a member of the 1994 squad that won the final NCAC championship for UC Davis. Schifano signed as an undrafted free agent with the Florida Marlins in 1997 and worked his way through the minor league system until making it to the Triple-A level with the Houston Astros in He also played professionally with the independent Central League and Northern League. In 2000, Schifano was a member of Team USA at the Panama Cup. When he graduated in 1997, Schifano held the career record for hits (214), and was second in games played (194) and at bats (678). He continues to remain in the top five in those categories and also appears on the all-time list in runs scored (135) and triples (12). Additionally, Schifano still holds the single season record for most chances without an error (103). Appropriately, he was selected to the program s all-time All-Defensive Team by the voters of the UC Davis Baseball of Hall of Fame. First year volunteer assistant coach Jason Armstrong comes to UC Davis from Trinity University in Texas where he served as the Tigers associate head coach, recruiting coordinator, and hitting coach. Armstrong s primary duties with the Aggies will include coaching the outfielders and hitters and he will serve as first base coach during games. In his only year at Trinity, Armstrong helped lead one of the best offensive attacks in Division III, as the Tigers hit.327 as a team and led the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in almost every category. Prior to coaching at Trinity, Armstrong set several single season and career records as a player. A four-time All-SCAC honoree, Armstrong led the Tigers to a No. 3 national ranking in 2004 and was selected as the 2004 SCAC Player of the Year. In addition, he was named West Region Player of the Year, was a first team All-American selection and was runner-up in the National Player of the Year voting. That same season, Armstrong set the school s single season record for hits (90), doubles (20), and triples (6). He currently holds the career hits record at Trinity with 281 hits which is also second highest in the SCAC record books and fifth best in Division III history. His 42-game hitting streak in 2004 also stands as third longest in Division III. Following a standout career with the Tigers, Armstrong was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 25th round of the 2004 MLB draft. During his five-year career, Armstrong worked his way up to the Advanced-A Level before retiring due to a career-ending shoulder injury. In 2005, Armstrong experienced his most successful season at the professional level. While batting.290 with the Class A Lansing Lugnuts, he was selected to represent the Western Divison in the Midwest League All-Star Game. Armstrong was amongst the league leaders in batting average and hits and led the Lugnuts in most offensive categories while starting 118 games. That same season, Armstrong was selected as the Lugnuts Offensive MVP and named to the Blue Jays Top 40 Prospect List. In addition to his years as a coach and player, Armstrong spent one year as a member of the San Francisco Giants minor league scouting department, and is an ISSA certified personal trainer, having received a professional certificate in personal training from San Diego State University in This past summer, Armstrong served as the hitting and infield coach for the Brewster Whitecaps of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League UC DAVIS BASEBALL

In addition to being the home of the Aggies since 1986, the stadium has hosted Babe Ruth Baseball and various adult leagues throughout the spring, summer and fall. In a massive effort spearheaded by then head baseball coach Phil Swimley, Dobbins Stadium was built almost completely with volunteer time, materials and funds. Previously known as Community Stadium, the Dobbins ballpark hosted its first UC Davis home game on February 18, However, the facility was still incomplete at that time. The volunteer efforts continued through that decade to transform the stadium into a full-service collegiate facility. In 2002, Dobbins Stadium was further enhanced to include permanent concessions, restroom facilities, a press box. The result of this community effort was a stadium whose playing surface is one of the best in Northern California. Its drainage system has the Aggies playing when many other teams in the area are postponed due to wet grounds. Additionally, students also have the opportunity to combine majors or customize their field of study by creating an individual major. For those interested in graduate degrees whether it be a master s degree or a doctorate UC Davis offers advising services to help students craft their education toward those goals. An estimated 86 percent of UC Davis students applying to graduate schools earn acceptance to either their first or second choices. COMMUNITY With a population of approximately 60 thousand, Davis is widely known for being a safe, active and socially innovative community. The downtown area boasts a multitude of specialty shops, restaurants, theaters and art galleries; while the city s numerous parks offer recreational opportunities for active students. ACTIVITIES On campus, UC Davis students can rally around the highly successful athletics department by joining the Aggie Pack spirit organization, or enjoy a first-class performance at the Robert & Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The university also offers hundreds of student clubs and organizations, including cultural clubs, fraternities and sororities, faith-based organizations and the Associated Students of UC Davis student government. For the active Aggie, students may participate in the diverse intramural sports program or join one of the 30-plus sports clubs. In 2004, the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) opened its doors, providing the campus with its own state-of-the-art fitness venue. In April, UC Davis hosts Picnic Day, an annual student-run open house. The popular event showcases all that the campus has to offer, attracting students, staff, faculty, parents, alumni and members of the surrounding communities. GETTING AROUND Nestled just southwest of Sacramento, the city of Davis rests just 15 minutes from an international airport, and contains a downtown station serviced by Greyhound and Amtrak. Centrally located in the Sacramento Valley, the town sits equally close to both the finest ski resorts and the Pacific Ocean s top beaches. Within Davis and its neighboring towns, both Yolobus and the student-operated Unitrans bus systems offer free transportation to registered undergraduates. The town boasts more bicycles per capita than any other city in the nation. More than 50 miles of bike paths make the entire town conducive to both riders and pedestrians.

46 UC DAVIS ATHLETICS GREG WARZECKA On August 1, 1995, Greg Warzecka became the 11th director of athletics at UC Davis. In the decade-plus since, the Aggie athletics program has enjoyed unprecedented success under his guidance. Warzecka s penchant for progress began from his first year as director when he was charged with the task of fully engaging the campus in dicussions regarding whether or not UC Davis would offer athletics-related financial aid. One year later, the campus announced the launch of its first-ever grant-in-aid program. Warzecka has also overseen UC Davis transition into two conferences in his short tenure. In 1998, the Aggies moved from the now-defunct Northern California Athletic Conference to the powerful California Collegiate Athletic Association. Then in 2003, the UC Davis program announced that it would join the Big West Conference and thus reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Under Warzecka s guidance, the Aggie athletics program increased its grant-inaid allocation nearly tenfold to approximately $5 million. During this period, he also engineered a substantial upgrade in athletics facilities, most notably the Schaal Aquatics Center (2004), the Marya Welch Tennis Center (2005) and the multi-use Aggie Stadium (2007). Director of Athletics During Warzecka s tenure, UC Davis captured six NACDA Division II Directors Cups as the most outstanding overall program in the country. For his part, NACDA selected Warzecka as its A.D. of the year for the D-II West Region in Furthermore, the editors of Sports Illustrated magazine lauded the Aggie program on three different occasions. In 1999 and 2000, Sports Illustrated For Women named UC Davis as the top Division II school for women athletics. One year later, SI selected UC Davis as its top D-II school for the year. Before turning to administration, Warzecka had been a successful baseball coach, first as an assistant at his alma mater, UC Berkeley. He then served as head coach at San Francisco State, then at the University of Chicago, where he also served his first post as men s athletics director. Warzecka returned to California in 1989 to become the A.D. at the University of Redlands, where he remained until he joined the Aggie athletics staff. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education from Cal in 1975 and his Master of Science with an emphasis in athletic administration from Cal State Hayward in iii NONA RICHARDSON Nona Richardson was named Senior Associate Athletics Director at UC Davis in March She brings extensive experience to her role at UC Davis which includes overseeing compliance, student services and sports medicine programs, as well as sport supervision.
