Last weekend, Liberty took two of three from the UConn Huskies, at Liberty Baseball Stadium, its first three-game home series of the year. The Flames won on Friday, 8-5, and on Sunday, 5-4. Liberty enters the week, averaging 5.92 runs per game, while allowing 5.38 runs per game, this season. The Flames have posted a 3-1 record at Liberty Baseball Stadium, this season. Liberty will play 11 of its next 14 contests at Liberty Baseball Stadium. Liberty opened with eight of its first nine games away from Lynchburg. SS Dalton Britt started in his 189th straight game, Tuesday at Elon. Since joining the Flames in 2012, the senior, has started every Liberty contest. Britt reached base in first 12 Liberty contests in. The streak came to an end, Tuesday. 1B/LF Andrew Yacyk recorded his third multi-hit game with two hits at Elon, Tuesday. Yacyk collected three hits and four RBI in Flames 7-3 victory over Marshall, Feb. 27. Yacyk drove in a career-high six runs in the season opener at South Florida (USF), Feb. 19. Yacyk collected three hits, including two home runs, one a grand slam. The first three batters in Liberty s batting order combined for eight hits and reached base 11 times in Liberty s 8-5 win over the UConn Huskies, last Friday at Liberty Baseball Stadium. CF D.J. Artis, 2B Eric Grabowski and RF Will Shepherd combined for eight hits and three walks to reach base 11 out of 15 times in the contest. Shepherd posted his second three-hit game of, tying his career-high with three RBI in the contest. Leadoff hitter Artis went 2-for-2 with a double, walked three times and scored twice in the win over UConn, last Friday. The OF leads the Flames with 16 hits and nine walks. The OF is tied for the team-lead with 10 runs scored. Artis is second on the team with a.340 batting average. No. 2 hitter Grabowski had three hits against UConn, his first time as a Flame, last Friday. One of his hits was a double, driving in a run and scoring twice. RHP Carson Herndon ran his record to 2-0, last Friday. The senior pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief in the 8-5 victory. Herndon struck out eight batters, one shy of his career-high of nine. Herndon picked up his first victory since April of 2014 with 3 1/13 innings of work in a 7-3 victory over Marshall, Feb. 27. The senior missed all of due to injury. 3B Andrew Kowalo had two triples, drove in two runs and scored a run against UConn, last Saturday. Kowalo leads the Flames in batting average (.357), RBI (12) and doubles (6). RHP Evan Mitchell pitched five scoreless innings against UConn in his first start in a Liberty uniform, this past Saturday. Last Sunday, DH Nick Walker collected a career-high three RBI in Liberty s 5-4 victory. Walker went 4-for-4, setting a career-high for hits, at Old Dominion on March 1. RHP Zander Clouse pitched 7 2/3 innings in the Flames 5-4 win over UConn, last Sunday. With the win, he moves to 2-0 on the season. It was the longest start of the season by a Liberty pitcher, this season. Clouse posted his first victory as a Flame, pitching 2 1/3 innings in a 1-0 combined shutout of Duke, Feb. 27 during the Baseball at the Beach Tournament. RHP Shane Quarterley earned his second save of the year, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings, not allowing a run, in Liberty s 5-4 victory over UConn, this past Sunday. Quarterley recorded two wins and a save in three consecutive outings, Feb The junior recorded his first win in a Liberty uniform in an 8-4 win over William & Mary, Feb. 22. He followed that up with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory in a 9-8 victory over Marshall, Feb. 26 and earned the save, combining with two other Flames to shutout Duke, 1-0, Feb. 27

For the second consecutive year, a Liberty pitcher was named the Big South Pitcher of the Year as Jared Lyons was selected the conference s top pitcher. Meanwhile, Alex Close became the first Liberty player to be named twice to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America first team. Toman s 2014 Liberty squad garnered the program s first ever at-large selection to a NCAA Regional. In addition, the Flames, who finished the year at 41-18, were ranked among one of the four major baseball polls during the regular season for the first time in program history, reaching as high as No. 21 in the Baseball America weekly poll on March 21. Liberty captured the Big South regular season title with 23 Big South victories, also the most in school history and at year s end, became the first team in league history to sweep the major conference awards. Toman was an unanimous selection as the conference s Coach of the Year, while Ryan Seiz was named the Player of the Year. Trey Lambert was selected the Pitcher of the Year and also the Scholar- Athlete of the Year, while Parker Bean was voted Freshman of the Year. Nationally, Seiz became the first player in Liberty history to be named to three postseason All-American teams. Meanwhile, Bean was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. In addition, Close and Lambert became the first two players to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team. Liberty led the Big South with a 2.62 ERA, the lowest in program history, and finished 2014 ranked 14th nationally in the category. The Flames also topped the conference with nine shutouts. The relief corps recorded 16 saves, tying for the second most in program history with Toman s 2010 team. Toman lead his team to the first NCAA Regional final appearance in program history in The Flames captured the Big South Championship and then defeated Clemson twice to make their first appearance in a regional final in the program history. In 2012, the Flames posted their second 40-plus win season in a three-year span under Toman and set school records for team ERA, shutouts and fielding percentage. Liberty pitchers recorded a 3.04 ERA, ranking 15th nationally, and set a Big South and school record with 11 shutouts. In addition, Toman saw first baseman Close named to two Freshman All-America teams. The year before, Toman saw seven players from his Flames squad selected during the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, the most players chosen in a single draft in the history of the program. Liberty posted a school record for wins in a single season with a record in 2010 and in 2009, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters. The Flames strikeout total led the Big South Conference. Their 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season s end. In addition, third baseman Tyler Bream was named a 2009 Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News. After 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner s coaching staff at South Carolina, Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State. During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the team s catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 27-year college coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/ American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA Regional trips, including eight straight appearances between 2000 and 2007, and three consecutive visits to the College World Series ( ). N.C. State made seven NCAA appearances during his time there. During his 11 seasons at South Carolina, he helped the Gamecocks to a combined record (.694). A catcher, Toman was a four-year letterwinner at N.C. State from , and served as team captain of the Wolfpack his junior and senior seasons. Toman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education from N.C. State in 1985 and graduated as the top student in the vocational industrial education curriculum. He received a Master of Science degree in sport management from N.C. State in Toman began his collegiate coaching career in 1989 as an assistant at Florida International for one year. A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman lives in Forest, Va. He has three children - Caroline (18), Charlie Mac (15), and Tucker (12). He is a member of the Thomas Road Baptist Church.
