1 game information Tuesday, August 14 AutoZone Park Memphis, TN new orleans baby cakes (58-61) at Memphis redbirds (74-46) RHP Sandy Alcantara (6-3, 3.46) vs. LHP Austin Warner (1-0, 2.16) THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes continue a sevengame road trip with the second of a four-game set against the Memphis Redbirds. The clubs have split 10 meetings this season. New Orleans has won eight of nine for the second time this year (April 30-May 8), and is in search of a 9-1 stretch for the first time since claiming 11 of 12 contests from August 9-21, The Cakes are within three games of the.500 mark for the first time since July 1 (40-43). YESTERDAY S NEWS Peter O Brien hit two home runs and Dillon Peters pitched 7.0 strong innings as the Baby Cakes beat Memphis, 4-2. Cristhian Adames provided the Cakes with an early lead, delivering an RBI single to cash in Braxton Lee s double to lead off the game. Peter O Brien slugged a solo shot in the fourth inning and a two-run blast in the sixth to put New Orleans in front, 4-1. Peters limited the Redbirds to two runs and eight hits while equaling season highs in innings and strikeouts (7). With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Peters gave up three consecutive hits, including an RBI single to Alex Mejia, but induced an inning-ending double play from Ramon Urias to preserve the lead. Jose Quijada got a double play grounder to end the eighth inning after a oneout single by Carson Kelly, and Jumbo Diaz set down the Redbirds in order in the ninth to pick up the save. ON THE HILL Sandy Alcantara gets the ball for his 16th start with the Baby Cakes and third against his former organization. In two previous games against Memphis, Alcantara is On This Date with a 3.75 ERA (5 ER/12.0 IP), losing his June 23 outing at AutoZone Park. Alcantara is 6-3 with a 3.46 ERA which would rank third in the PCL with another 4.1 innings to qualify. The right-hander earned his first Major League victory by limiting the Mets to one run on three hits in 5.0 IP on June 28. He was placed on the DL on July 3 due to an infection in his right armpit. Alcantara made a dominant return to New Orleans on Thursday, blanking Iowa on one hit with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings, improving to 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in seven starts at home. DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 contests and is hitting.441 (30x68) over his last 17 games, bringing his average from.295 to.327 and moving into a tie for fifth place in the PCL batting race. In that span, Dean has produced eight doubles, four home runs, 18 RBI and 16 runs scored. The Southern League s Player of the Month for April, Dean owns a.346 batting average between AA Jacksonville and NOLA, tied for fourth-best in all of Minor League Baseball, and his 136 hits overall are tied for the sixth-most in the minors. He is batting.422 (27x64) and slugging.703 against left-handed pitching. 2000: Mike Robertson s two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth rallies New Orleans past Albuquerque, 4-3. Robertson drives in all four NOLA runs on the night, also contributing an RBI groundout in the first and a run-scoring single in the seventh. BACK-TO-BACK The PCL named Austin Dean its Player of the Week for August Dean s OPS over five games bested all players in Minor League Baseball. He also paced the PCL in batting average (.647), slugging percentage (1.353), on-base percentage (.700), total bases (23), while matching the league s top home run (3) and extra-base hit (6) marks. Additionally, he drove in seven runs, scored seven runs and walked three times. On the heels of J.B. Shuck last week, they become the second NOLA duo to win the award in back-to-back weeks, joining Colin Porter and Jason Alfaro for July and July 28-August 3rd, This is Dean s third career Player of the Week award and second this season, netting Southern League honors for April with Jacksonville, after hitting.520 in seven games. TO THE MOON Peter Mooney recorded his third consecutive game with two hits last night. Mooney is 34x104 (.327) in his last 32 games with 26 RBI and six home runs, after totaling just four RBI and zero home runs in his first 28 games. Mooney s 19 RBI in July finished 11th in the PCL, and were the most in any month during his seven-year career, surpassing the 10 RBI in both July and August last season. He is batting.368 (35x95) in 28 games at home, compared with a.261 mark (23x88) in 30 contests on the road. BOMBS AWAY Two days after Austin Dean became the first Baby Cake in 2018 to hit two home runs in a game, Peter O Brien matched the effort with his 14th career two-homer game, and fifth at Triple-A. O Brien is the first NOLA player to hit home runs in consecutive at-bats since Xavier Scruggs on August 17, 2016 at Salt Lake. Five of O Brien s first nine hits with the Cakes have been for extra bases (1 2B, 4 HR). ROAD WARRIORS Since getting swept in a three-game series in El Paso to open August, the Cakes have won five consecutive road games, matching their season high set May 4-8. They have outscored opponents in the span, hitting 80x235 (.340). The last six-game road winning streak was a seven-game run against Round Rock and Memphis, June 12-26, DOG DAYS Through 12 games in August, the Cakes are 8-4 and have scored 81 runs, second-most in the PCL to Las Vegas (82). New Orleans is tied for second in home runs (15) and ranks third in batting average (.296) and fourth in ERA (4.11). NOLA has not had a winning month since going last August. BIG SHUCK HUNTER J.B. Shuck went 0x4 last night, snapping his 15-game on-base streak. Shuck is still batting.435 (30x69) over his last 20 games, adding two home runs, six doubles and 15 runs scored to increase his batting average from.150 to.330 in that span, and was PCL Player of the Week for July 30-August 5. Baby Cakes pitchers have a 3.12 ERA with Wallach behind the dish, compared with a 4.53 ERA with the other backstops. JUMBO-LAYA Jumbo Diaz recorded his team-leading 10th save of the year and the 137th of his MiLB career, tops among active players.
