Right-hander Lucas Sims makes his second start after a stellar Opening Day showing (5.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 9 K, 3 BB). He ll be countered by right-hander Chih-Wei Hu, making his season debut for the Biscuits. LAST TIME OUT: After a delayed start and two different in-game rain delays that totaled more than two hours and 25 minutes, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos pulled away late to win the series finale over the M-Braves 5-1, taking four of five in the series. Tied at 1-1 coming out of the final delay, Brandon Dixon singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth, then three more came across in the seventh. Brandon Barker pitched well for the Braves, allowing just a run on five hits over five innings in a start shortened by the weather. STELLAR STARTERS: Through five games, Mississippi Braves starters have been stellar, firing 25 innings and allowing just 19 hits for five runs, striking out 30 and walking eight. The quintet of Lucas Sims, Chris Ellis, Sean Newcomb, Rob Whalen and Brandon Barker are 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA on the young season. BIG LEAGUE BRAVES: The Mississippi Braves had their first callups to Atlanta on Monday afternoon, sending LHP Hunter Cervenka to the Braves bullpen for their game in Washington. In addition, 2015 M-Brave Mallex Smith was called to Atlanta from AAA Gwinnett. Cervenka becomes the 17th M-Brave in team history to be called directly to Atlanta from AA. He made two scoreless relief appearances for Mississippi this season and hasn t allowed an ER in his last 31.2 professional innings between independent baseball, AAA Gwinnett and the M-Braves, a span of 27 appearances. Smith spent the first half of 2015 with Mississippi, hitting.333 with a homer and 20 RBI before a midseason promotion to AAA. He went 1-for-3 in his major league debut, getting an infield hit off Max Scherzer in his second plate appearance. Later in the game, he was pulled from the game with a laceration over his eye while attempting to steal second. THE SKIPPER, BRAVE AND SURE: For the first time since 2012, the Mississippi Braves have a new manager at the helm in former big league third baseman Luis Salazar. Salazar spent the past five seasons managing the Braves high-a Carolina League affiliate in Lynchburg ( ) and Carolina (2015). It will be Salazar s 13th season as a minor league manager, posting a career record of and a record in the Braves organization. He played 13 seasons in the big leagues from 1980 to 1992, posting a.261 average and 94 home runs between the Padres, White Sox, Tigers and Cubs. Salazar returns to the Southern League after serving as hitting coach of the Jacksonville Suns (2008) and Chattanooga Lookouts (2009). FAMILIAR FACES ON STAFF: This season will be the fourth straight in which all of the M- Braves coaches boast Major League playing experience on their resumes. In addition to Salazar s 13 years in the big leagues, hitting coach Garey Ingram played parts of three seasons for the Dodgers in the mid-90s, while Dennis Lewallyn spent parts of eight seasons from with the Dodgers, Rangers and Indians. A new addition as a fourth coach this season, Barbaro Garbey played three years in the big leagues with Detroit and Texas, winning a World Series ring with the Tigers in PROSPECTS IN THE SIP: The Mississippi Braves Opening Day roster boasts 10 of the top 30 Braves prospects according to MLB.com, led by LHP Sean Newcomb (#2) and SS Ozzie Albies (#3). Also on the roster are RHP Lucas Sims (#12), RHP Chris Ellis (#14), RHP Andrew Thurman (#18), OF Dustin Peterson (#21), RHP Jason Hursh (#24), IF Johan Camargo (#25), RHP Rob Whalen (#27), and RHP Mauricio Cabrera (#28). The defending-southern League champion Lookouts will be in town from April 17 to 21, with the Shuckers following April 22 to 26. In the Hole Mississippi closes out April and begins May with a ten-game road trip to Jacksonville and Tennessee from April 28 to May 8. AGAINST THE BISCUITS Tuesday night will be Sims second start against Montgomery, last facing them on August 6, 2015 at Trustmark Park. He allowed just three runs on two hits over 5 1/3 innings, posting 8 strikeouts and working around four walks. Mississippi went on to a 7-4 win, scoring four in the eighth to come from behind. LAST TIME OUT After walking and hitting the first two batters of the game, Lucas Sims settled in for a gem over five innings against Pensacola, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out nine, one shy of his career high--which also came against Pensacola in August Sims took the tough loss after the pen allowed two more runs late, and the Wahoos took the Opening Day contest 3-1.
