2 2007 HIGHLIGHTS OU HAD AN IMPRESSIVE WINNING STREAK IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, INCLUDING ITS 11TH-STRAIGHT AT PETCO PARK ABOVE. SEASON RECAP The 2007 Oklahoma baseball team narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003 after finishing the season with a overall record. The Sooners finished seventh in the Big 12 regular season standings with an mark and went 2-1 in the 2007 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. After a slow start to the season, Oklahoma rattled off 11 straight victories, including five wins over top 25 teams. Following the 2-4 start, the Sooners won 18 of their next 21 games, including a 2-1 series win over then-no. 8 Texas A&M in the Big 12 opener At the end of the regular season, the Sooners 446 strikeouts was a league high. The Sooners finished 2007 with the league s third highest total (466) behind Texas A&M (504) and Oklahoma State (484). Oklahoma s 96 stolen bases ranked second in the Big 12 behind Texas A&M (151). The total is the most by a Sooner team since 1996 (104). Aaron Ivey led all Sooners with 23 swipes. The quick start in conference play was slowed down by three straight series defeats, all 2-1 decisions, against Texas, Baylor and Nebraska. In the final five weekends of Big 12 play, the Sooners finished the regular season with series wins over Kansas State and Texas Tech but lost series to Kansas, Oklahoma State and Missouri. A strong showing in the Big 12 Championship, which included wins over No. 11 Missouri and No. 21 Oklahoma State, was not enough for the Sooners to qualify for their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. A 7-6 loss to Baylor, which sent the Bears to the title game, ended the Sooners season and bid for their first Big 12 title since IVEY NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN OF THE YEAR Oklahoma senior outfielder Aaron Ivey was named the ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA s Academic All-American of the Year for baseball on May 29, Each year, the College Sports Information Directors of America name an Academic All- America team in baseball and one of those individuals is selected for the top honor. The award is among the most prestigious bestowed upon any college baseball player. Ivey is the first in program history to receive the award and the first Sooner to receive the honor since Stacey Dales (women s basketball) in Ivey, who was also one of 10 finalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award, is an energy management major and has earned a 4.0 GPA every semester at Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City native was also named a First Team Academic All-American for 2007, the first Sooner in program history to earn that honor (first or second team) in consecutive seasons In Boydsworld.com s weekly pseudo RPI system, the Sooners were ranked No. 30 following the College World Series. OU was ranked No. 27 in the rankings released following the Big 12 Championship. OU was 21-7 against non-conference opponents in 2007 (22-7 in 2006), including a 9-1 mark in midweek games. The Sooners posted an mark against the field of 64 that advanced to the 2007 NCAA Tournament, including a 7-6 mark against regional host schools MLB DRAFT RECAP Junior catcher Jackson Williams was selected 43rd overall in the supplemental first round. Williams became the first Sooner since David Purcey (17th overall) to be drafted in the first round and the 16th overall. Below is a look at the six Sooners selected in the 2007 MLB Draft.: Jackson Williams - First Round - San Francisco Giants Joe Dunigan - Fifth Round - Seattle Mariners Heath Taylor - 10th Round - Cleveland Indians Aaron Reza - 21st Round - Boston Red Sox Stephen Porlier - 21st Round - Oakland Athletics Brad Burns - 26th Round - New York Mets 108
3 BAKER TABBED FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN Oklahoma first baseman Aaron Baker was selected to the 2007 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team by Collegiate Baseball and Rivals.com. Baker is the sixth Sooner to collect the accolade and the first since Kody Kaiser in 2005 (Baseball America). After coming off the bench on opening day, Baker started every game after for the Sooners at first base (except one start at catcher). Baker was the only Sooner to play in every game in 2007 and collected at least one hit in all but 10 games. He finished the year with a.323 batting average and an OU freshman record 50 RBIs (second most on the team). Baker led Oklahoma with 16 doubles and 14 multiple-rbi games and ranked third with 20 multi-hit contests. REZA AND HUGHES COLLECT POSTSEASON HONORS Two members of the OU baseball team were named to the 2007 All-Big 12 Championship Team following the conference tournament on May 27. Outfielder/pitcher Joseph Hughes was selected along with third baseman Aaron Reza. The last Sooners to appear on the All-Big 12 Championship Team were Jason Franz (OF) and Mark Roberts (P) in PORLIER AND WILLIAMS HEADLINE ALL-BIG 12 TEAMS Junior Jackson Williams (C) and sophomore Stephen Porlier (RHP) represented Oklahoma baseball after the regular season as the All-Big 12 teams were announced by the league office. Williams and Porlier earned second team honors while seniors Joseph Hughes (OF) and Aaron Ivey (OF), juniors Joe Dunigan (OF), Aaron Reza (SS) and Heath Taylor (LHP) and freshman Aaron Baker (1B) received honorable mention. FOUR SOONERS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 HONORS Seniors Aaron Ivey, Joseph Hughes and Cory Williamson were named to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 First Team on May 15, Junior Jarod Freeman was honored on the second team. Hughes, Williamson and Freeman were each selected for the first time in their careers. It marked the third time in Ivey s career that he was selected to the first team and the third time he was nominated with a 4.0 GPA. Ivey is one of four Sooners in program history to be named to the first team on three occasions, joining Casey Bookout ( ), Chris Ebright ( ) and Matt Reubel ( ). BIG 12 MEDIA NAME BAKER TOP FRESHMAN OU freshman first baseman Aaron Baker was selected by two newspapers from around the Big 12 Conference as the top freshman in The Daily Oklahoman (Oklahoma City) and Fort Worth Star Telegram (Fort Worth, Texas) both tabbed Baker as the league s top freshman in Below is a look at some of the other Sooners who were recognized by the media around the conference: HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANT DATES IN 2007 March 3, OU head coach Sunny Golloway records the 400th victory of his career with an 11-5 victory over UC Riverside. March 10, The Sooners record the season s longest winning streak with 11 consecutive victories. March 17, Freshman first baseman Aaron Baker hits safely in his 22nd straight game, vs. Michigan State, as the Sooners wear green hats and socks in honor of Saint Patrick s Day at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Baker hit safely in each of his first 22 games in a Sooner uniform, a freshman record at OU and a mark that ranks third best all-time in program history. April 13, Sophomore Stephen Porlier tossed the first complete game of his career with nine innings of four-hit ball against Nebraska. The four-hit shutout was the first for a Sooner since Daniel McCutchen shut down UC Riverside in 10 innings on March 3, April 21, Aljay Davis drives in six runs off four hits against Kansas State in Manhattan. The six RBIs marks the first time a Sooner drove in six or more runs since Chris Ebright had nine RBIs on March 28, 1987, against Oklahoma City. May 25, The Sooners extended their winning streak over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship to seven games with a wild 9-8 win in front of 9,582 fans at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
