1 Game #1, Home Game #1 - Thursday, April 7th - Durham Bulls Athletic Park - 7:05 p.m. Durham Bulls (0-0) vs. Charlotte Knights (0-0) LHP Blake Snell (6-2,1.83 in Triple-A, 2015) vs. RHP Scott Carroll (7-4, 3.76 in Triple-A, 2015) Thursday s Game The Bulls franchise begins its 92nd season - and 19th at the Triple-A level - against South Division rival Charlotte in the opening game of the 2016 season. The four-game series kicks off a six-game homestand for the Bulls to begin the year, closing the first week of action with a three-game series against Gwinnett, before a 10-game road trip where the Bulls tour the South Division - visiting Charlotte, Gwinnett and Norfolk. About Last Season Despite posting a record over.500 in manager Jared Sandberg s first season as a Triple-A manager, the Bulls finished tied for third in the South Division and missed the playoffs for the first time since Durham finished 74-70, just 4.0 games out of first place in the division and 9.0 games out of a Wild Card berth. Strikeout Kind of Team The Durham pitching staff has led the IL in total strikeouts each of the past four seasons. In 2012 the team struck out 1,125 batters, in 2013 a league-record 1,246, in 2014 it was 1,220 batters and last season 1,117. Bounce-Back Hitting Season After finishing with a 3.98 runs/game ratio in 2014, the secondworst rate in the International League, Durham scored 4.2 runs/game in 2015, fifth-most in the league. Opposing teams scored 4.2 runs/game against Durham, which was the only team to have a 1:1 runs to runs against in the league. The Bulls also improved on their batting average, with a.250 team average, slightly up from.248 in The 2014 mark was the Bulls worst in their history as a Triple-A team by 14 points (previous worst:.262 in 2007). Dingers and Discipline The Bulls were second in the International League in home runs in 2015, with 123 long balls. The since-departed J.P. Arencibia and Corey Brown paced Durham s slugging lineup. Arencibia had a league-high 1/17.45 HR/AB, and Brown had a 1/22.96 rate. Durham also had a league-leading 506 walks, but only 10 intentional walks. This season, the Bulls look to bolster their walk rate with the addition of Kyle Roller, who led the league in IBB (10) and was fourth in the IL in BB (60) with Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre last season. Leading Man Taylor Motter finished 2015 in the top 5 International League players in 8 categories, including leading the league in doubles (43), extra-base hits (58) and sacrifice flies (9). He was also among the top 10 in the league in batting average (.292). Only two other Bulls finished among the top 5 in batting categories (Arencibia and Brown).
