3 Our Partners Formed in 1961, the Scottsdale Charros are an all-volunteer group of business and civic leaders dedicated to providing support and funding for youth programs, educational scholarships and grants to local charities. With a history of innovative fundraising, the Charros have leveraged spring training baseball as a chief economic driver in Scottsdale. Funds raised through the sale of Charro Lodge passes and stadium advertising are donated back to the community, making the Charros one of the community s largest philanthropic contributors. Spring Training is the premiere annual fundraising event for the Charros, we welcome more than 200,000 people during the month of March to Scottsdale Stadium, making it one of the top destinations for Spring baseball. Bush in 2005 and received Major League Baseball s Beacon of Life Award at the 2008 Civil Rights Game, an award bestowed upon individuals whose life embodies the spirit of the civil rights movement. In recognition of Robinson being named Major League Baseball s first black manager, the Cleveland Indians erected a statue of Robinson at Progressive Field s Heritage Park in The statue shows Robinson holding the lineup card with the Indians batting order from his debut game on April 8, 1975 against the New York Yankees. He was the designated hitter and batted second, hitting a home run in his first at-bat. Gaylord Perry Perry played for eight major league teams in his 22-year career, breaking in with the San Francisco Giants in He spent his first 10 springs in Phoenix with the club before being traded to the Cleveland Indians in The Indians and Giants were the first two teams to officially conduct spring training in Arizona. In his first season with the Giants, Perry pitched an AL leading 29 complete games and also led the league with 24 wins, capturing his first of two Cy Young Awards. Perry was still pitching for the Indians during Robinson s first season as manager. He also spent Cactus League seasons with the San Diego Padres in Yuma ( ) and the Seattle Mariners in Tempe ( ). I ve been a big, big fan of baseball in Arizona because the weather is just so great it seems to be every day is spring training, said Perry recalling his early Cactus League seasons with the Giants. We had four teams and as soon as they found out how great Arizona is to play baseball in the spring a lot of the other teams moved there, said Perry.
