6 Special Programs and Events at the Historic Village 72
Because the Buffalo Gap Historic Village is part of a history education foundation, it is able to offer numerous special programs and events aimed at illustrating and illuminating America s past. Some of the most successful programs and events are discussed in this chapter. SPECIAL PROGRAMS The 1925 School Program West Texas students have a unique opportunity to experience a day in a 1925 school, thanks to this special program at Buffalo Gap Historic Village. It uses the historic Cottonwood Flat School to recreate a class using a 1925 curriculum, allowing students to get a taste of what their predecessors in the 1920s experienced. The initiative, begun in April of 2003, highlights a 1925 school day in rural West Texas using the period school and furnishings to show how classes have changed from when students great-grandparents went to school. Most historical sites depict the typical one-room schoolhouse of the nineteenth century, but the village chose 1925 to highlight the great changes that took place after World War I. Discussions of airplanes, radios, automobiles, advances in farming, Texas first woman governor, and the Scopes Monkey Trial are heard in the two-room schoolhouse during these occasions. The program is available by reservation Monday through Friday and is limited to one class at a time. An interpreter in the role of a 1925 school teacher presents 73
The Texas You Expect the school program, which is currently available for kindergarten through the sixth grade. The program is available morning and afternoon, and, when coupled with a guided tour of the village, makes for a fun, enjoyable day. Vintage Base Ball Program Should you show up at the Buffalo Gap Historic Village on either the first or third Sunday of the month, it is not uncommon to see members of the Buffalo Gap Vintage Base Ball Club locked in competition, struggling to recapture the flavor of a game played in a bygone era. Playing vintage base ball (and yes, it was two words), they recreate an earlier time, blending history and sport in an effort to educate the public not only about the evolution of base ball, but about society and politics in late nineteenth century Texas. The club got its start in 2002, when the Buffalo Gap Historic Village launched a vintage base ball program. Originally fielding a handful of players, regional interest in 74
Special Programs and Events the program has grown, and it now finds a more formal home at nearby McMurry University s Public History Program, with players from the college and throughout the community. Currently outfitting two teams, the Chips and the 407s, the groups offer a history lesson every time they take the field. In 1883, the location of the Taylor county seat was pretty much up for grabs, as both Buffalo Gap, the county seat since 1878, and Abilene, the new city formed at Texas and Pacific Railroad mile marker 407, hoped to be the home for the county courthouse. These vintage base ball teams reflect the character of each community and try to represent this when they take the field. The Buffalo Gap Chips appear as 1880s-era farmers and ranch hands of rural Taylor County, wearing overalls and work clothes in lieu of anything that passes as a baseball uniform. In contrast, their more cosmopolitan urban cousins, the Abilene 407s, show up smartly dressed in navy blue knickers, white shirts, caps, and bright red socks. Vintage baseball at Buffalo Gap is different from the modern game. They play without gloves, a playing aid not popular until the 1890s, and use the language of an earlier time. Their hurler (pitcher) tosses the apple (ball) to the striker (batter) who tries to hit it with the willow (bat). If he launches a daisy cutter (well hit ground ball) past one of the tenders (infielders), he then legs it (runs hard), so that he can make his first (get to first base). If he is successful, he might then take his second and third before pro- 75
The Texas You Expect ceeding to the dish (home plate), where he tallies his ace (scores a run). If not, he is pronounced dead (out) and then waits until his team next comes to bat. Play is at a much faster pace, as vintage base ball is not a pitchers duel, but is designed around getting the ball in play. Although the Chips and the 407s play most of their matches at an odd-shaped cigar-box of a field crammed into the back of the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, they have taken their brand of base ball on the road. In August 2005 the Buffalo Gap Chips won the inaugural President s Cup Tournament held at Montgomery College, located north of Houston. More recently, the club hosted the Texas Forts Trail Vintage Base Ball Tournament in Abilene, played at McMurry University s Driggers Field. Their goal is to continue to generate interest in vintage base ball in Texas, something that has already happened elsewhere in the country. SPECIAL EVENTS Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Every Independence Day, the historic village opens the grounds for free to all who want to celebrate the nation s birthday at the site. Festivities begin with a full reading of the Declaration of Independence (a powerful document meant to be heard, not just 76
Special Programs and Events read). Following this reading, village personnel ring the large church bell fifty times to honor the states of the union. Visitors then enjoy the afternoon with hot dogs and drinks, and afterwards take in a vintage base ball game. Horrors of the Frontier/Haunted Village This special event in late October has become one of the village s most popular offerings. After dark during the days leading up to Halloween, the village uses more than thirty volunteers to transform the site into a large haunted village. Tour guides lead visitors in groups of ten through the site, telling them true stories (and a few tall tales) of gore and disaster from the Texas frontier. At different places throughout the site, visitors jump with fright as costumed volunteers enact frightening scenarios, or as scarecrows and other inanimate objects seemingly spring to life. Christmas at the Gap Held every December, this special event allows the village to be decorated in the Christmas traditions of old. On a selected evening, the site is opened up for visitors to view parts of the village by lantern-light. In the church, volunteers read special yuletide stories from the past, and friends, neighbors, and strangers gather to sing favorite Christmas carols. 77
The Texas You Expect Dinner With Since 2001 the historic village has periodically hosted dinners with famous historical figures from the past. The village hires different actors to portray the historical figure, then invites the public to join this person for dinner on the grounds. The historical guest of honor talks about his or her exploits and then entertains questions from the audience. In the past, the village has hosted such notables as David Crockett, Edgar Allan Poe, Will Rogers, and Meriwether Lewis. This special program continues periodically, and if there is any particular historical figure with whom readers would like to dine, be sure to contact the village to let them know. Continuing Education Because the mission of the McWhiney Foundation is history education, the historic village offers a variety of continuing education opportunities. The Foundation has wide contacts with prominent historians around the nation, and as a result the village can host lectures, workshops, and other events for the public using top-quality talent. In addition, the Foundation has local university history professors and a certified history teacher on staff. Weddings The most frequent special events to occur at the village are weddings in the church. The church is available for wedding rentals, and during several weekends of the year, 78
Special Programs and Events couples and their families enjoy the beautiful old building as the surrounding for their nuptials. In the north end of the wagon barn there is a bridal changing room for use by the wedding party. Wedding parties may also rent the Gallery meeting room, the school house, or part of the grounds for receptions. Other Special Events From time to time, the historic village will create special events on various historical or cultural topics. In the past, the village has sponsored a Horses to Horseless Carriage event, where wagons, draft animals, and vintage cars fill the site for visitors to see the evolution of transportation. Other events have included a buffalo hunter exhibition, teacher workshops, and children s activities at Halloween, Easter, and in the summer. Horses to Horseless Carriage event 79
