Central, today wrap up a seven-game homestand with the final contest of a four-game set against the San Francisco Giants Chicago started this stand with a three-game sweep of the Pirates before taking two of the first three against the Giants yesterday s 3-2 setback snapped a five-game winning streak and a nine-game home winning streak. By winning the first two games of this four-game set, the Cubs have now been unbeaten in their 10 home series in the season s second half entering this Giants series, the Cubs went in their first nine home series since the All- Star break. Four of Chicago s five wins have been by a single run, and in fact, seven of Chicago s eight games overall have been decided by one run the team is now in one-run games this season. MAKE ROOM ON THE MANTEL: MLB yesterday named Kris Bryant N.L. Player of the Month for August and Kyle Hendricks N.L. Pitcher of the Month for August. Hendricks finished August 4-0 with a 1.28 ERA (6 ER/42.1 IP) and a complete game shutout in six starts. Bryant batted.383 (41-for-107) with seven doubles, a triple, 10 homers, 22 RBI, a.472 OBP and a.748 slugging mark. LEADER OF THE PACK: Kyle Hendricks 7.0 shutout innings Tuesday night lowered his season ERA to 2.09, well ahead of San Francisco s Madison Bumgarner and his 2.51 ERA for the best mark in baseball. Hendricks has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his 18 starts dating to May 22 (1.63 ERA), the longest streak by any big league pitcher this season he is the fourth Cubs starting pitcher in the 30 years to allow three earned runs or fewer in 18- straight starts, joining Jake (29, ), Mike Morgan (27, 1992) and Frank Castillo (23, ). CROSSING THE PLATE AT A RAPID RATE: Kris Bryant leads the majors with 112 runs scored this season, four ahead of Toronto s Josh Donaldson and 12 ahead of the next-closest N.L. player, Colorado s Nolan Arenado (100) with nearly a month to go in the season, Bryant s 112 runs scored are already the most for any Cub since Derrek Lee scored 120 runs in the 2005 campaign.
