1 2012 IL West Champs INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME INFORMATION Radio Broadcast: WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and iheartradio TV Broadcast: HTSN (Ch. 6.2) Communications Department Victory Field 501 W. Maryland Street Indianapolis, IN Louisville Bats 43-44, 2nd IL West RHP Chad Rogers (NR) Thursday July 4, :05 p.m. EDT Victory Field Indianapolis, Indiana Game #89 Home Game #49 LAST TIME OUT: Starter Graham Godfrey allowed just one run on three hits over 6.0 innings, but Louisville plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 4-3 win... Prior to RHP Duke Welker giving up three runs in the bottom of the ninth against the Bats last night, the Indianapolis bullpen had surrendered just three runs to Louisville in their previous nine meetings (31.0 IP)... It was also the first three earned runs allowed by Tribe relievers over their last 22.0 innings pitched. SERIES SHOWDOWN: With last night s defeat the Indians are now 5-5 against Louisville this season... The Tribe s five losses to the Bats are already one more than all of last season in which the Indians posted an 18-4 mark against Louisville... Last night s loss also snapped the Tribe s season-best five game road winning streak. INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS: Despite last night s loss, Indianapolis (56-32) still owns the best record in the International League by 1.5 games over Durham (54-33)... The Indians swiped two bases and belted four doubles on Wednesday to increase their International League-best total to 108 stolen bases and 176 two-baggers... The Tribe pitching staff also continues to pace the IL in several categories including ERA (3.37), innings pitched (790.0), saves (32) and WHIP (1.26). ORG. REPORT: The Pirates improved their MLB-best record to with a 6-5 win over Philadelphia last night... Former Indians southpaw Jeff Locke picked up his eighth win with Pittsburgh (8-1) after surrendering just three runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings pitched... 3B Pedro Alvarez also remained red-hot at the plate, belting his 21st home run of the season... Elsewhere in the organization CF Gregory Polanco went 2-for-4 with an RBI and walk in Altoona s 6-3 win at Binghamton, while in his third start of the season with West Virginia, pitching prospect Luis Heredia suffered his first loss despite allowing just a single run on three hits over 5.0 innings pitched... In his second rehab outing with the GCL Pirates, Indianapolis OF Jerry Sands went 1-for-3 and belted a solo home run. TRIBE TRENDS: Including last night, starter Graham Godfrey has allowed just three earned runs on five hits over his last two starts (11.0 innings)... Indians starters have now turned in quality starts (6.0+ innings & 3 or less earned runs) in four of their last five outings, all against Louisville... Wednesday marked just the second time all season that Indianapolis has lost a game when leading after six innings, dropping their record to 40-2 overall in those situations... At home this season, the Indians are 20-5 in games in which they score first, and 18-4 during contests in which they hit at least one home run. TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: LHP Andy Oliver (4-2, 3.35) is scheduled to make the start for the Tribe tonight s Independence day matchup... The Indians southpaw has been a dichotomy of good and bad pitching stats throughout the season, as he not only leads the IL in strikeouts (97) and batting average against (.207), but has also surrendered the most walks (77)... Despite all his control issues, the Indians have found a way to win when Oliver is on the mound, going 13-4 in games in which he starts, including winning each of Oliver s last seven outings... In the southpaw s last start, which began the Indians and Bats series on June 29, the left-hander did not figure in the final decision after allowing three runs on five hits and six walks while striking out three over 6.0 innings pitched... Prior to that outing, the southpaw turned in one his best starts of the season on June 24 against Charlotte in which he earned the win after allowing just three scores on five hits and four walks while striking out six over 7.0 innings of work... This season Oliver has excelled in night games, turning in a 4-0 record and 1.91 ERA (14 ER in 66.0 IP) over 12 starts under the lights, compared to an 0-2 mark and 7.54 ERA (19 ER in 22.2 IP) in five starts during the day. TONIGHT S BATS STARTER: RHP Chad Rogers (NR) is expected to make his Triple-A debut tonight for Louisville... The right-hander made 13 starts with Double-A Pensacola this season, posting a 3-2 record and 2.20 ERA (17 ER in 69.2 IP) with 55 strikeouts and 26 walks over 69.2 innings pitched... He began the season strong, turning in a stellar 1.73 ERA (11 ER in 57.1 IP) over his first 10 starts of the season, but was charged with six earned runs in only 12.1 innings (4.38 ERA) over his three most recent outings... With Pensacola, Rogers was particularly effective against right-handed batters, holding them to just a.178 batting average (24-for-135), while left-handers didn t fare much better, posting only a.211 clip (23-for-109)... Early in his career, Rogers suffered an infamous injury as he was bitten by a shark while surfing off the waters of Galveston, Texas, after being drafted by the Reds in 2010 out of Galveston CC... Despite the wound taking 60 stitches, he showed no permanent damage and signed his deal with Cincinnati... The right-hander recorded excellent numbers in his first two professional seasons, posting a combined 15-9 record and 2.93 ERA (69 ER in IP) over 64 appearances (28 starts) in 2011 and 2012 THE KING HAS RETURNED: After going through an 0-for-8 slump from June 28-30, Indians OF Alex Presley has collected six hits in his last 14 at-bats (.428 batting average), including going 1-for-4 with an RBI double in last night s contest... Even including his mini-slump, over his last 11 games, Presley is now batting.341 with a team-best 15 hits, which is also tied for the second-most knocks in the IL, and has also scored six runs and driven in seven. INDY RACING: OF Felix Pie stole his team-leading 30th base of the season in last night s game and has now swiped four bags in his last four contests... Amazingly, Tribe SS Chase d Arnaud s 34 steals in 2012 ranked second in the IL for the entire 144-game season... Pie is off to a quick start in July, posting a.429 average (3-for-7) with two runs and two doubles, after batting just.192 (15-for-78) in 22 games in June. THE HITS KEEP ON COMING: INF Ivan DeJesus extended his hitting streak to four straight games by going 2-for-4 with a double in last night s contest.. During his four-game streak (since June 30), DeJesus has collected the second-most hits in the IL (7) as part of his overall batting average of.389 with two doubles and two stolen bases... DeJesus has enjoyed hitting at the friendly confines of Victory Field this season, posting a.341 average (29-for-85), and has excelled against left-handed hurlers as well, posting a.353 clip (18-for-51) against opposing southpaws. JOHNSON NAMED JUNE PLAYER OF THE MONTH: LHP Kris Johnson was named the Indians June Player of the Month this morning and will be honored in a ceremony prior to tonight s game... The recently named IL All-Star went 2-1 with two saves and the IL s third best ERA (1.65) in June... The Tribe s left-hander began the month with three scoreless appearances out of the bullpen (6.2 IP) before rejoining the rotation and making four straight quality starts... Johnson allowed just one earned run through a combined 12.0 frames of work in his first two starts, before concluding June with back-to-back outings of a career-high tying 7.0 innings in which he was charged with only five total scores on 10 scattered hits.
