Last night was the Rays first win that did not require a comeback since April 14 at BOS (10-5) 7 of their 11 wins have been of the comeback variety, 4th most in the AL the Rays have held a lead in 10 consecutive games but are only 5-5 over that stretch the Rays have blown a lead in each of their last 4 losses and 7 of their last 8 losses. The Rays drew 7 BB in each of the last 2 games, the first time they ve done so in back-to-back 9-inning games under Manager Kevin Cash (last Sep 2-3, 2013 at LAA). This is the third straight series the Rays are playing an opponent entering the series in first place in their division (DET, HOU, BAL). The Rays are 7-9 against AL East opponents, and 4-2 outside the division their first 14 games were vs. AL East rivals. JUST LIKE THEY DREW IT UP Due to the uncertain weather forecast last night, the Rays tapped RH Austin Pruitt to start the game about 30 minutes before first pitch Pruitt (3-IP) combined with RH Danny Farquhar (0.2), RH Jumbo Díaz (1.1), RH Chase Whitley (3.0) and RH Alex Colomé (1.0) in a 2-hit shutout after Chris Davis led off the 4th with an infield single, Rays pitchers did not allow a hit and retired 17 consecutive batters until Colomé s 2-out walk in the 9th. Last night was the first time the Rays had ever shut out the Orioles at Camden Yards on 2 hits or fewer they had done it only once at home: April 22, 1999, a 1-0 win by LH Tony Saunders. It had been nearly a decade since the Rays last played a game at Camden Yards in which 2 runs or fewer total were scored the Rays lost 1-0 in 10 innings on May 9, 2007 on a walk-off homer by ex-ray Aubrey Huff 88 games were played in between. A RAYS FIRST OR WAS IT? According to the Elias Sports Bureau, last night was the first time the Rays had ever used five or more pitchers in a shutout allowing 2 hits or fewer on June 17, 2015 at WAS, five pitchers (RH Steve Geltz, RH Matt Andriese, RH Kevin Jepsen, RH Brandon Gomes, RH Ronald Belisario) appeared in the box score but only four were credited with an appearance Gomes was announced but never threw a pitch due to a rain delay the Rays also changed starting pitchers that day, from Andriese to Geltz, due to pinch-hit opportunities in a NL park. The last team to employ five or more pitchers in a shutout allowing 2 hits or fewer was San Francisco on May 31, 2016 at ATL (five pitchers, one hit) the last AL team to do so was Kansas City on Sep 27, 2015 vs. CLE (five pitchers, 2 hits). 29 STARTERS IN NINE-PLUS YEARS RH Austin Pruitt became just the 29th different starting pitcher used by the club in the Rays era (since 2008), fewest in the majors, and the 13th of those developed by the Rays the Giants are next with 32; the Indians are the next fewest in the AL with 39 the Orioles have used 53 LAD and SD have used the most (65 each). 29 Starting Pitchers Used in Rays Era (Since 2008) How Acquired # of P s Total GS (pct. of GS) Developed by Rays (draft or int l) (60.1 pct.)
