Question #1 If a coach protests a rule and brings a rule book on the field, he should be ejected. Question #2 Videotaping by any team personnel may not be done from the bullpen. Question #3 With two outs R1 leaves early. Batter-runner grounds out. The defense may chose to make the third out either on R1 or the batter-runner. Question #4 Games officials shall be the plate umpire and one, two or three base umpires. A minimum of one official must be contacted for each game. Question #5 Only starters may be re-entered. Question #6 If an unreported player is at bat, a pitch has not been thrown and the defense notifies the umpire, the batter is out. Question #7 The host team or game s management director of a tournament shall designate an official scorer before each game and identify him/her to the umpires and opposing coaches. Question #8 The Flex may play offense only. 1
Question #9 When a ball goes out of play, the dead-ball appeal cannot be made until the umpire puts the ball in play. Question #10 If the Flex plays a defensive position and the DP is playing a defensive position, a substitution must be charged to another player. Question #11 Cell phones and pagers are not allowed on the field but may be used in the dugout for purposes other than coaching or scouting. Videotaping from cameras and cell phones from any team area is not allowed. Question #12 Timing Play: A term used by the umpire to temporarily suspend play. Question #13 The coach s box is for the coach and they are entitled to stay in the box during any play. Question #14 If an unreported player is at bat, a pitch has been thrown and the defense notifies the umpire that the player has not been reported, the batter is out and ejected. Question #15 When onsite within one hour before game time, the coaches of both teams and/or the on-site administrator shall decide whether a game shall not be started because of unsatisfactory conditions of weather or playing field. This shall apply to both games of a doubleheader. 2
Question #16 Three players on the home team are wearing headbands. Two are read, one is blue. The umpires rule that all three must be the same color. Question #17 Runners may advance on dead ball appeals. Question #18 A coach may not interfere with a fielder who has a reasonable opportunity to make a play on a foul ball. Question #19 Should bad weather or unfit conditions exist during a game, the plate umpire shall be the final judge as to the suspension, resumption or termination of play. Question #20 Base runner leaving a base prior to release of the pitch is a delayed dead ball. Delayed dead ball is signaled. At the conclusion of the play, the coach of the defensive team shall have the option of taking the result of the play or No Pitch is declared and the batter is returned to the batter s box. In addition, the offending base runner(s) is out, each other base runner must return to the base occupied at the time of the pitch. Question #21 Only pitchers are protected to be allowed adequate time to warm up if replacing an injured player. Question #22 If a player is unreported and the coach in violation informs the umpire prior to the offended team s notification, there is no penalty and the unreported player shall be declared in the game officially. 3
Question #23 When the plate umpire or his/her clothing interferes with the catcher s attempt to throw out a runner on a pickoff or steal attempt. Delayed dead ball is signaled. If the runner is not out, she must return to the base legally occupied at the time of the pitch. If the runner is ruled out, the ball remains live, and there is no interference. Question #24 If a runner is obstructed prior to reaching the base she would have reached had there not been obstruction, the umpire shall call the violation and use the delayed dead ball signal. Question #25 Game balls must be available a minimum of 60 minutes before the scheduled starting time of the game. Question #26 If an unreported player is at bat, a pitch has not been thrown and the defense notifies the umpire that the player has not been reported, there is no penalty. Question #27 Batters are not credited with a base hit when an umpire interferes with a play. Question #28 The DP and Flex may both play offense at the same time. Question #29 Illegal Pitch: Any pitch by the pitcher that is in violation of the pitching rules or an effect for a rule violation. 4
Question #30 A single piece, unaltered wooden bat may be used in the on deck circle. Question #31 Cell phones are not allowed on the field. Question #32 A pitcher must complete the first batter she faces. Question #33 During the regular season, the eight-run rule may be set aside by competing teams or conferences. Question #34 Before each game, the umpires shall inspect the bats for grip, size, current ASA certification and obvious damage. Question #35 A pitcher is not entitled to warm-up pitches if she returns to pitch in the same half inning. Question #36 If no substitute is available and a player is injured, the Flex my play both offense and defense even if the DP is in the game (special exception). Question #37 With bases loaded and no outs, B5 hits an easily playable fly to third base. R 1 on first and R3 on third both leave their bases prior to the pitch. The umpires rule triple play: R1 and R3 out for leaving early: B5 out for infield fly. 5
Question #38 With no outs R1 on first, R2 on second, and R3 on third when R3 leaves early. The batter hits a line drive that is caught by the second baseman. She throws to the shortstop at second base for the second out. The shortstop attempts to make it a triple play by throwing to first but throws the ball into a dead ball area. The defense may elect to have R3 called out for leaving early, R1 return to first, R2 return to second and the batter return to bat with the previous count. Or, the defense may elect to have R1 on third, R3 score (subject to possible appeal for tagging up after a caught fly ball), and two outs. Question #39 With R2 on second and R3 on third, the batter hits a fly ball that is caught for the second out. R3 legally tags and scores. R2 leaves early and is called out on appeal after R3 scored. The umpire allows the run. Question #40 Upon arrival to the field, each coach shall provide a printed copy of the current NCAA Approved Bat List available on the NCAA ( and SUP Arbiter Sports websites as amended through communication from the NCAA relating to bats added to or scratched from the list. All bats in the dugout and on the field shall be highlighted and included in the count for each model on the printed NCAA Approved Bat List. Question #41 A coach may assist a runner who has not crossed the plate while she is actively running the bases and the ball is in play. Question #42 If a batter does not obviously attempt to get hit by a pitched ball and the ball is in the batter s box, the batter shall be awarded first. Question #43 The plate umpire, his/her crew and game management personnel shall determine whether playing conditions permit the start of the second game of a doubleheader. 6
Question #44 If the plate umpire believes a pitcher has intentionally thrown at a batter, he may eject the pitcher and catcher, but not the head coach without warning. Question #45 A base runner leaving a base prior to the release of the pitch is a delayed dead ball. Question #46 If both the DP and the Flex are playing defense, another player in the first 9 positions will be required to play offense only. Question #47 The batter does not have to attempt to avoid being hit by a pitched ball in the batter s box. Question #48 Team managers are responsible for duties assigned by the head and/or assistant coaches. Managers shall be held accountable for their actions as representatives of their institutions. Question #49 Umpires should give dented, bent, altered or illegal bats to the head coach so they can be kept out of the game. Question #50 The field belongs to the fielder, and the stands belong to the spectator. There are no exceptions to this rule. 7
