In game-three, Wake Forest will start senior righthander Charlie Mellies (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on the mound. The Clifton, VA native has made one start for a total of 2.0 innings pitched. He has allowed one hit (.167 opponents batting average) and two walks with no strikeouts. Clemson will counter with sophomore lefty Ryan Hinson (2-1, 2.23 ERA) on Sunday. The Rock Hill, SC native has made eight starts for a total of 44.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 40 hits (.244 opponents batting average) and 14 walks with 35 strikeouts. The Demon Deacons Wake Forest, led by third-year Head Coach Rick Rembielak, enters the series with a overall record and 7-8 ACC mark after posting midweek victories over UNC Greensboro and #19 Coastal Carolina. The Demon Deacons, who are 13-8 at home this season, have played one of the nation s toughest schedules. They have a 5-8 record against top-20 ranked teams. Nine of those 13 games have been against top-six teams as well. Wake Forest is hitting.274 with a.375 on-base percentage thanks to 149 walks and 68 hit-bypitches. Allan Dykstra (12), Willy Fox (12), and Ben Terry (11) all have double-digit hit-by-pitch figures. The team has hit 36 homers with 36 steals in 46 attempts as well. Dykstra is among the national leaders in home runs with 13 along with 11 doubles and 43 RBIs. He has a.506 on-base percentage thanks to 33 walks. Fox is hitting.344 overall with four homers and 27 RBIs, but is batting.431 in ACC games. The pitching staff has a 5.21 ERA and.294 opponents batting average. The team has allowed 156 walks with 229 strikeouts. Senior righthander Josh Ellis is 2-1 with a 1.07 ERA and six saves in 19 relief appearances. He has also struck out 38 against only seven walks. The Demon Deacons sport a.964 fielding percentage as well. The Tigers Clemson enters the series at Wake Forest with a 23-9 overall record and 8-4 mark in the ACC after winning all five games last week, including a threegame sweep at Virginia Tech over the weekend. The Tigers, who are 5-4 on the road this season, also bring a #14 national ranking into Wednesday s game. The team is hitting.289 with a.373 on-base percentage. Brad Chalk is hitting a team-best.393 with a.518 on-base percentage. Doug Hogan is hitting.355 with five homers and 18 RBIs. Taylor Harbin leads the squad with 28 RBIs and 12 doubles. Marquez Smith, the lone Tiger to start all 32 games in 2007, is hitting.333 with a team-high six homers and 27 RBIs as well. First-baseman Andy D Alessio, who suffered a pulled groin in the second inning against Miami (FL) on April 1, did not play in any of the five games last week. D Alessio is listed as questionable for the Wake Forest series. The pitching staff has a 3.28 ERA and.245 opponents batting average. It has combined to strike out 270 against 93 walks. Daniel Moskos has a team-high six saves, while Stephen Clyne has an 0.37 ERA and.163 opponents batting average along with two saves in 15 relief appearances. The team is fielding at a.969 clip as well. Worth Noting Clemson has won five straight road games after starting the season 0-4 on the road. Clemson has an 8-0 record when it scores at least one run in the first inning. In the Tigers 23 wins, they are hitting.319 with runners in scoring position, while their opponents are hitting just.193. In their nine losses, Clemson is hitting just.200 in that situation, while its opponents are hitting.382. Clemson is 5-5 when it commits one error and 10-3 when it commits two or more errors. Polls Clemson jumped to the #14 spot in the Baseball America poll and #14 in the Collegiate Baseball poll on Monday after going 5-0 in five games last week. Clemson also rose to #15 in the Sports Weekly poll. The Tigers #1 ranking by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball on February 12 was their first since February 27, 2006, when Clemson was ranked #1 by those same two polls. The Tigers have been ranked #1 for 20 weeks by at least one of the major polls in Head Coach Jack Leggett s 14th season at Clemson. Clemson Has 174 Top-25 Wins Under Leggett Clemson has a 1-2 record against top-25 ranked teams in In 14 seasons at Clemson, Head Coach Jack Leggett has 174 wins over teams ranked in the top 25. Only three times in his first 13 seasons has he had a losing record against teams in the top 25. Leggett Against Top-25 Teams Year Overall Top 25 Top 10 Top Totals Leggett Leading a Consistent Winner Head Coach Jack Leggett has a (.702) record at Clemson in his 14th season. The legendary Bill Wilhelm has the most wins of any Tiger coach with 1,161 in 36 seasons ( ) at Clemson. Leggett s 631 wins are second-most in school history. No other Clemson coach has more than 70 wins while in Tigertown. Through Leggett s first 13 seasons at Clemson, he had 608 wins. Only three other programs (Florida State, Wichita State, Rice) have more wins over that 2 20 Consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearances ClemsonTigers.com

3 2007 Clemson Baseball Notes span from Furthermore, he has led the Tigers to at least 39 wins every year he has been at the helm of the program. Clemson along with Florida State and Wichita State are the only three programs in the nation to win at least 39 games every year since Leggett Reaches 1,000 Career Wins Head Coach Jack Leggett, in his 14th season at Clemson and 28th overall, won his 1,000th game on March 25 in the Tigers 5-0 victory at Maryland. He has a overall record, including a ledger at Clemson. At the age of 53, Leggett became one of the youngest coaches to reach 1,000 career wins. Leggett became the 29th head coach in Division I history to reach the 1,000-win mark. He also became the 10th active head coach at the Division I level to reach 1,000 career wins. Lefties Lights Out So far this season, Head Coach Jack Leggett has called upon six different lefthanders, including starter Ryan Hinson along with relievers Daniel Moskos, Matt Zoltak, Chris Fidrych, William Bond, and Alex Martin. Hinson has a 2.23 ERA in eight starts, Moskos has a 2.45 ERA and six saves in 18 appearances, and Zoltak, Fidrych, Bond, and Martin have combined to allow just seven runs. Therefore in a combined 88.1 innings pitched, they have allowed only 80 hits and 25 earned runs (2.55 ERA) with 82 strikeouts. Widmann Out Indefinitely Due to Neck Injury Starting shortstop Stan Widmann (Hurst, TX) is out indefinitely due to a neck injury. The junior was hitting.409 in the Tigers first six games of the season. He has one home run and six RBIs along with a perfect fielding percentage in 25 chances in the field. The 2007 season has marked his third straight year as Clemson s starting shortstop. He hit.307 in 67 games as a sophomore on Clemson s 2006 ACC Championship and College World Series team. He was also the Tigers leading hitter for the eight NCAA Tournament games last year with a.387 batting average. D Alessio Likes Em Loaded If you had to use one phrase to describe senior Andy D Alessio (Naples, FL), it might just be run-producer. The first-baseman has a knack for driving in runs in all kinds of situations. This season, he has 16 RBIs on 28 hits. In 2006, he totaled 85 RBIs on 78 hits. The 2005 season saw him do the same, as he had 60 RBIs on only 58 hits. But no stat has proved his value in producing runs more than his stats with the bases loaded. He is 0-for-3 with the bases loaded in But in 2006, he was 8-for-11 (.727) with two doubles, two home runs, and 23 RBIs with the bases full. In 2005, he was 6-for-9 with two home runs and 18 RBIs with the bases loaded. Therefore in his career ( ), he is 16-for-29 (.552) with four homers and 48 RBIs with the bases full. D Alessio Moving Up Home Run Chart A year after Kris Harvey totaled 25 home runs in 2005, second-most in the nation, Andy D Alessio provided the big bat in the Tiger lineup in 2006 with 23 long balls. This season, he has three homers, giving him 45 in his career, seventh-most in Tiger history. Clemson Career Home Run Leaders Rk Player Year(s) HR 1. Jeff Baker Michael Johnson Matthew LeCroy Jim McCollom Khalil Greene Eric Macrina Andy D Alessio Jim Crowley Kurt Bultmann Joe DeBerry Keith Williams Kris Harvey Chalk Had a 50-Game On-Base Streak Brad Chalk (Greer, SC) ended his sophomore season by reaching base safely in each of the last 27 games. And since he did the same in the first 23 games that he played in 2007, he reached base via a hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch in 50 straight games. That streak came to an end against Miami (FL) on March 30. He hit safely in 45 of those 50 games as well. Overall this season, the junior is hitting.393 with a.518 on-base percentage. He has walked 25 times, been hit-by-pitch five times, and struck out just 12 times, a trend that has been evident throughout his career. He has walked 100 times, hit-bypitch 22 times, and struck out only 52 times in 163 career games and 545 at-bats. He is also a.360 career hitter with a.475 on-base percentage. Hogan Boosting Tiger Lineup Junior catcher Doug Hogan is in his first year as Clemson s starting catcher in And he wasted little time making an impact by blasting two solo homers in the Tigers season-opening 14-0 win over George Mason on February 16. Hogan, who batted #9 in the lineup that game, entered the season with just one career homer, but became the second Tiger in as many years to hit two long balls in the season-opener. Tyler Colvin hit two home runs in the 2006 season-opener against James Madison as well. Hogan, who hit four homers in the Tigers first five games of 2007, went 26 straight games without a long ball until April 8 at Virginia Tech. There, he hit a three-run home run in the 10th inning to give Clemson a 5-2 win. He is also hitting.355 with a team-high 25 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples, five homers, and 18 RBIs. Not bad for a player who entered the season just 6-for-46 (.130) with a homer and seven RBIs in 46 career games. Harbin Pulling Double Duty Junior middle infielder Taylor Harbin (Travelers Rest, SC) has had to make the move from second base, where he was a preseason first-team All- American, to shortstop due to the loss of regular shortstop Stan Widmann. Harbin s preseason accolades were due in a large part to his defensive Head Coach Jack Leggett Full Name: Jackson Scott Leggett Born: March 5, 1954 in Bangor, ME Education: Bachelor s degree in physical education and minor in history at Maine (1976); master s degree in teacher education at Vermont (1980) Playing Experience: Four-year letterman (baseball) at Maine ( ); three-year letterman (football) at Maine ( ) Coaching Experience: Head coach at Vermont ( ); head coach at Western Carolina ( ); assistant head coach at Clemson (1992,93); head coach at Clemson ( ) Family: Son Tanner (23), daughter Colby (21); Wife Karen Leggett s Clemson Head Coaching Record Year Overall ACC Finish NCAA 1994^ st Regional st CWS nd CWS th Regional T-2nd Regional rd Super Regional nd CWS nd Super Regional th CWS T-3rd Regional T-4th Regional nd Super Regional 2006^ *1st CWS * - Atlantic Division; ^ - ACC Tournament Champion Leggett s Head Coaching Record By School School Seasons Years W-L Pct. He started the season as Clemson s leadoff batter, but is hitting just.143 in 49 at-bats at either the #1 or #2 spot in the order. So when Head Coach Jack Leggett decided to move Johnson down in the order to the #8 spot on March 10, his batting average has increased. At either the #7, #8, or #9 spot this season, he is 24-for-70 (.343). Overall, Johnson is hitting.261 this season. He is also 9-for-18 (.500) with five RBIs in the last six games. Smith Heating Up in Late Innings Senior third-baseman Marquez Smith (Ocala, FL) is hitting.333 overall with six homers and 27 RBIs this season. But as the game progresses, his batting average rises drastically. In the first four innings of games, Smith is just 13-for-57 (.228). From the fifth inning on, he is 28-for-66 (.424). Bunnell Goes From Club Team to Starter at 2B In the fall of 2004, the beginning of his sophomore year at Clemson, David Bunnell (Charlotte, NC) tried out for the team as a walk-on but was cut. In the spring of 2005, he played on Clemson s Club team, then he did not play any organized baseball the following school year as a junior. During last 2006, Tanner Leggett, former Tiger ( ) and son of Head Coach Jack Leggett, recommended him to his father to work Clemson s summer baseball camps. The elder Leggett obliged and Bunnell got to know Clemson s coach. Due to the loss of catcher Adrian Casanova and several infielders from the 2006 squad, Leggett invited Bunnell to join the team in Bunnell was slated to be a bullpen catcher and provide depth in the infield for the Tigers, but in January, freshman infielder Graham Stoneburner suffered a seasonending leg injury. So Leggett told Bunnell to continue taking ground balls on his own because he might need him to play in the infield. After hitting a pinch-hit double in his first career plate appearance in the season-opener against George Mason on February 16, Bunnell did not play in the Tigers next 10 games. But with no other Tiger solidifying his name at second after Taylor Harbin moved to shortstop to replace an injured Stan Widmann, Bunnell earned his first career start there on March 9 against Memphis. He had a hit and reached base three times in the game. He also hit an early RBI single in the March 11 game and went 3-for-9 with two walks while not committing an error in 15 chances in the series. Bunnell is currently battling for playing time at second base, as he is hitting.242 in 33 at-bats this season. He also has a solid.962 fielding percentage, committing just two errors. Although he has planned on 2007 being his one and only season with the program, he is still eligible to play in 2008 as a fifth-year senior. With his boisterous cheering section beyond the outfield fence, D-Bunny has made a name for himself in a varsity uniform. Father Sees Son Go Deep, Part II In 2006, former Tiger Tanner Leggett, son of Head Coach Jack Leggett, hit his only home run as a Tiger against Virginia Tech on April 28. It was a special moment for the elder Leggett, as he is Clemson s third-base coach and got to give his son an extra-long handshake after rounding third base. Another thrilling moment for a Tiger coach occurred on February 21, 2007 against High Point. Freshman infielder Ben Paulsen, son of Assistant Head Coach Tom Riginos, hit a two-run homer in Clemson s six-run third inning. It was Paulsen s first hit as a Tiger, and it was key in Clemson s 11-3 win. Then against Gardner-Webb on March 27, Paulsen had a career day. He went 5-for-5 with a double, homer, four runs scored, and six RBIs in Clemson s 14-2 victory. It was an extra-special occasion for the freshman, because his father was in the third-base coaching box in each of the at-bats. Head Coach Jack Leggett was not at the game, as he was with his ailing father in Vermont. It was the first time ever that Riginos was in the third-base coaching box in a game Paulsen was playing in. Paulsen is 25-for-90 (.278) with four doubles, three homers, and 14 RBIs in 29 games (23 starts) this season. Moskos Moving Up Charts Junior lefthander Daniel Moskos (Alta Loma, CA) entered the 2007 season as one of the most prolific closers in the country after serving in the same role for Team USA during last summer when the club captured the gold medal at the world championships in Cuba. In 21.0 innings pitched, he had an 0.86 ERA and six saves, as he allowed just eight hits and four walks with 35 strikeouts. He has kept up his impressive stats for the Tigers in In 17 relief appearances and one start, he has a 2-2 record, six saves, 2.45 ERA, and.241 opponents batting average. The hard-thrower has allowed 21 hits and seven runs with 32 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched. Moskos had 10 saves in 2006, which alone placed him 10th all-time in Clemson history in that category. He has also made 72 career appearances, 11th-most in Tiger history Consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearances ClemsonTigers.com

He has allowed just 14 hits (.163 opponents batting average) and five walks with 19 strikeouts while tallying a 4-0 record and two saves. Clyne went the last 15.1 innings of 2006 without allowing a run, meaning he had a streak of 31.1 consecutive innings pitched over 16 relief appearances without allowing a run dating back to last season. That mark was just behind the school record of 32.2 consecutive scoreless innings pitched by Scott Berney. Berney, a starter, opened the 2000 season, his first and only as a Tiger, by not allowing a run until there were two outs in his 33rd inning on the mound that year. Clyne s value to the team had been as a long reliever in the first half of 2007, and he did well in that role in his fifth season in the program. But since Daniel Moskos has moved to the weekend rotation, Clyne has taken over as the team s closer. Clyne has a 7-1 record, 2.21 ERA, and four saves in 50 career relief appearances (77.1 innings pitched). He has also allowed just one homer and 21 walks with 75 strikeouts, good for a 3.57 strikeoutto-walk ratio. Clyne is the only fifth-year senior on the 2007 team. Tigers Shake Up Pitching Staff With the emergence of senior righthander Stephen Clyne, who has an 0.37 ERA and.163 opponents batting average in 24.1 innings pitched this season, Head Coach Jack Leggett decided to move Daniel Moskos from the closer role to the weekend rotation. Moskos made his starting debut at Virginia Tech on April 6, as the junior lefty allowed just one run in 4.0 innings pitched in that outing. Moskos had made 71 relief appearances from prior to his first career start. The owner of 16 career saves had never started on the mound in a Clemson uniform prior to the start in Blacksburg. However, he was used as a starter in the Cape Cod League in the summer of His ability to throw three or four different pitches for strikes was a reason Leggett opted to move him into the weekend rotation. Clyne s stellar senior season had a lot to do with the move as well. The Parkland, FL native is throwing harder than ever and has routinely hit the low 90s on the radar gun. This past offseason, he focused on increasing his lower-body strength in the weight room, and he credits that to his higher velocity. He already had a sharp breaking ball. D.J. Playing a Different Tune in 2007 Sophomore utility player D.J. Mitchell (Rural Hall, NC) started all 13 postseason contests in right field in 2006 after Travis Storrer went down with an injury, and he performed well, hitting.311 in those 13 games. He has platooned in right field with Wilson Boyd and Alex Burg so far this season. But unlike last year, he has added pitcher to his resumé in He did not appear on the mound in 2006, but had a successful summer with Thomasville in the Coastal Plain League. There, he had a 2.25 ERA and save in 16.0 innings pitched over nine relief appearances. Mitchell also earned the victory in a starting role in the league championship game. Mitchell made his Tiger debut on the mound against George Mason on February 16. He pitched 2.0 perfect innings with a strikeout in the Tigers 14-0 victory over the Patriots. Then against High Point on February 21, he earned his first career win. In 4.0 innings pitched in relief, he allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in the Tigers 11-3 win. Overall in 2007, he is 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched over six relief appearances and two starts. He also has 19 strikeouts against only four walks and is holding opponents to a.220 batting average. He is playing an important role on the 2007 team with the unexpected preseason loss of righties Sean Clark and Graham Stoneburner. He has also contributed of late at the plate. He is hitting.260 overall with five sacrifice bunts and eight walks against only three strikeouts in 50 atbats. His ninth-inning single against Georgia on April 4 tied the score, then he came around to score the winning run in Clemson s dramatic victory. Hinson Showing Consistency on the Mound Sophomore lefthander Ryan Hinson (Rock Hill, SC) has been a weekend starter all season. In eight starts, he is 2-1 with a 2.23 ERA along with 35 strikeouts against 14 walks in 44.1 innings pitched. He has also yielded just one home run. He has been perhaps Clemson s most consistent starter in In each of his eight starts, he has allowed two earned runs or less. In 2006, he made 18 relief appearances and one start. In only one of those 19 appearances did he allow more than two earned runs. His nemesis in his young career has been Georgia Tech. He has made four relief appearances against the Yellow Jackets, allowing eight earned runs in 7.0 innings pitched (10.29 ERA). Therefore in his other 68.0 innings pitched against all other teams, he has allowed just 16 earned runs, good for a 2.12 ERA. Overall in his career, Hinson is 6-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 18 relief appearances and nine starts. Unofficial RPI Warren Nolan s RPI By Team Rk Team ^W-L Rating SoS 1. He has also struck out 35 against only 11 walks and is holding opponents to a.168 batting average. In ACC regularseason games, he has 22 strikeouts in only 12.1 innings pitched as well, good for a 16.1 strikeoutsper-nine-innings-pitched mark. He has been a strikeout machine out of the bullpen as well. In his eight relief appearances, he is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched. The power pitcher has also allowed just 10 hits (.141 opponents batting average) and three walks with 31 strikeouts (10.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio) out of the bullpen. Vaughn Valuable as Middle Reliever Sophomore righty Matt Vaughn (Summerville, SC) struggled as a freshman, but in 2007, he has become one of the most valuable pitchers out of the bullpen for the Tigers. He is 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA and.256 opponents batting average in 22.1 innings pitched over six relief appearances and one start. Vaughn has also struck out 23 against only six walks. Future ACC Tournament Sites The 2007 and 2008 ACC Tournaments will be played at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville (FL), where the tourney was played in 2005 and In 2009, the ACC Tournament will be held in Boston, MA at historic Fenway Park.
