Four players moved through Iowa to their Major League debuts with Chicago infielder David Bote, and pitchers Justin Hancock, James Norwood and Duane Underwood Jr. RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY: The 2018 season will be remembered for its bitter cold, persistent rain, and harsh heat that led to a record seven postponed games and two cancelled contests at home, with an additional two postponed games on the road. Nine games were delayed for a total of four hours and 39 minutes of delays. The I-Cubs began the season with the first Opening Day doubleheader in history due to forecasted freezing temperatures, and were able to play on just two of the first five dates of Iowa ended the season in similar fashion as two of its last three games were cancelled due to inclement weather. HITTING HEARTACHES: Iowa s season was heavy with offensive challenges as the team sat at the bottom of the PCL in runs (526), hits (1,101), triples (18), home runs (79), RBI (97), total bases (1,575), batting average (.2), on-base percentage (.318), slugging percentage (.39) and OPS (.667). Iowa averaged 3.81 runs per contest with its 526 total runs marking its fewest since the Iowa Oaks scored 516 in Iowa s.2 team batting average was the second lowest in franchise history, trailing 198 Cubs by.001. MAKING HISTORY: Ryan Court hit for the cycle on July 20 vs. New Orleans. It was Iowa s second cycle in history and the first since Robin Jennings accomplished the feat on August 15, 1997 vs. Oklahoma City. Memphis Luke Voit also hit for the cycle against Iowa at Principal Park, for the fourth cycle allowed by Iowa in franchise history. Voit began his quest for the cycle on Saturday, June 30 with a triple and a home run, before the game was suspended after four innings. The next day, Voit completed his cycle with a double and a single, before capping the effort with his second home run and fifth hit of the game in the ninth inning. Omaha s Scott Thorman was the last opponent to hit for the cycle against Iowa on Aug. 29, WALK-OFF THIS WAY: Iowa won nearly one-third of its home games in walk-off fashion with eight of 25 victories at Principal Park credited to the walk-off. Efren Navarro started the trend with a walkoff single against Oklahoma City in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Opening Day. Ryan Court mashed a walkoff single to left on May 17 to give Iowa a -3 win over Omaha in 11 innings. Just a few days later, Mike Freeman hit a walk-off single on May 20 in the ninth inning against Omaha. Bijan Rademacher was the hero twice with a bases-loaded walk in the 10th against New Orleans on May 27. He then hit a sacrifice fly to give Iowa another walk-off win in the ninth inning the next day. On June 6, Victor Caratini plated two with a bases-loaded single in the ninth to hand Iowa a -3 win over Albuquerque. David Bote got his tasted of heroics with a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the ninth against Colorado Springs on June 22. Bote was recalled by Chicago and accomplished the same feat on July 8 against Cincinnati. CALL THE POLICE: Iowa s 10 stolen bases allowed were its third-most in franchise history, trailing the teams from 199 (158) and 2013 (18). Iowa s 2018 catchers Chris Gimenez, Taylor Davis, Will Remilliard, Ali Solis and Erick Castillo combined to cut down 20 percent of attempted base stealers (35CS, 10SB), it s lowest team percentage since 2013 (17%). EXTRA, EXTRA: In the first season of Minor League Baseball s new extra inning rule, Iowa played extra frames 1 times including in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Opening Day and in five of its first 15 games. Iowa s 1 extra-inning contests were the fourth most in the PCL, trailing New Orleans with a league-most 20. The I- Cubs finished with a 6-8 record in these games for 11th in the PCL. NIFTY FIFTY: The I-Cubs went it their 50th season of Triple-A baseball in Des Moines to finish last in the PCL. Their.362 winning percentage was the lowest of any full-season Minor League Baseball team this season. Only three other teams logged a winning percentage under.00 Single-A Hagerstown (52-81,.391), Advanced-A Florida (51-80,.389) and Single-A Burlington (50-8,.373). Iowa s 50 wins were its lowest total in franchise history, though the team avoided the organization s lowest winning percentage. The 1992 squad held on to the bottom spot, going with a.357 winning percentage.

Twelve innings marked the shortest game in which Iowa fanned 19 times. Iowa s team total of 1,188 strikeouts in 2018 are the second-most in franchise history, trailing the 201 I-Cubs with 1,280. BAD BLOOD: Iowa marked a franchise record with 10 consecutive home losses June 23 through Game 1 of a doubleheader on July 13. The I-Cubs were shut out twice through this stretch and were overall outscored by their opponents. The streak was snapped by a 5-3 victory over Nashville. The previous record was eight-straight home losses, last matched in HOME RUN HEARTACHES: Iowa finished at the bottom of the PCL with 79 home runs 17 behind New Orleans (96) in the penultimate spot and 9 behind league-leading Salt Lake and Las Vegas (173). Iowa s home run count was its fewest team total since the Oaks hit 77 in It is the fourth-lowest total among PCL teams in the last decade (OKC, 77 in 2009 NO, 68 in 2015 SL, 68 in 2016). SLAP A W ON THIS ONE: Alberto Baldonado went 7-2 with a.88 ERA across 37 games for the I-Cubs. Only Nashville s Dean Kiekhefer notched more wins in the PCL as a reliever, going 8-1. Seven victories paced the 2018 I-Cubs and marked the most wins for an Iowa reliever since Blake Cooper went 7- over 50 relief appearances in Entering the season, Baldonado had not earned a win since Aug. 31, 201 through a span of 135 games. FULL HOUSE: Principal Park hosted a season-high 13,005 fans on Aug. 3 for a Firework Friday vs. Salt Lake. It ranks as the 2th-largest crowd in Iowa Cubs history. The high for the day was 93 degrees with clear skies. POWER SAP: Iowa wrapped the season with with no home runs through eight games against Colorado Springs at Security Service Field. Since at least 2005, no team has ever failed to hit a home run in a season series of three or more games in Colorado Springs. The only other time a team did not hit a long ball in a series at Colorado Springs was when Salt Lake and the Sky Sox played a rain-shortened two-game set in OUCH: Three Iowa Cubs pitchers plunked three batters in a game to tie the franchise record Trevor Clifton (July Nashville), Duane Underwood Jr. (Aug. Oklahoma City) and Jen-Ho Tseng (Aug. 19 vs. Oklahoma City). Prior to 2018, Iowa pitchers had only hit three batters in a game five times in 9 seasons. Blake Parker was the last I-Cub to plunk three in a game, coming on June 2, 2009 against New Orleans. DOUBLE-DIGIT DOOM: Jen-Ho Tseng (2-15), Duane Underwood Jr. (5-10) and Alec Mills (5-12) all came away with double-digit losses on the year a testament to their longevity in the Iowa rotation. Tseng and Mills took the top-two spots among the PCL league leaders in losses, while only three other PCL pitchers outside of the I-Cubs logged 10 or more losses in The last time three Iowa pitchers had 10 or more losses in a single season was in Steve Adkins (7-13), Jeff Hartsock (5-12) and Laddie Renfroe (3-10) contributed to Iowa s season. WITH SYRUP ON TOP: Dillon Maples dominated PCL hitters this season, using his evasive sinker to fool opposing hitters. Maples set an Iowa franchise record with a K/9 rate (10.0+IP), while also leading PCL relievers (30.0+IP). The righty struck out four in a single inning twice due to dropped third strikes, and struck out the side 12 total times. THE HIGHS AND THE LOWS: One year removed from his second career Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors, Jen-Ho Tseng spent his first full season at the Triple-A level and never found his footing with Iowa. The 23-year-old set a franchise record with 11 consecutive losses (May 30- Aug. 30), and finished the season 2-15 to tied with Chris Floethe (1972) and Drew Rucinski (2016) for second in losses in a season for Iowa. Tseng saw glimmers of excellence, collecting seven quality starts, but couldn t gain offensive support as he was 1- in these games. THAT LL LEAVE A MARK: Stephen Bruno was pegged by a team-leading 12 pitches the most in a single season since Calvin Murray was also hit 12 times in Bruno has been hit by 23 pitches wearing an Iowa Cubs uniform, placing him in a tie for fifth all-time in Iowa franchise history with Bobby Scales. K KOUNTER: Ryan Court finished the season fourth in the PCL in strikeouts with percent of his MONTH PA K K% plate appearances (50PA). KEEP IT CLOSE: Ninety-five of Iowa s 138 games were decided by three or fewer runs in 2018, leaving just 3 contests decided by a wider margin. The I-Cubs went 18-2 in one-run contests (1th in the PCL), in two-run games (16th in the PCL) and 3-1 in three-run games (16th in the PCL). STREAKING: Ryan Court compiled a 20- game hitting streak July -26, batting.57 (32-for-70) with 7 doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 1 RBI. It was the longest streak for an I-Cub since Willson Contreras also hit safely in 20-straight games in The 20-game streak was tied for the fifth-longest hitting streak in the PCL for the season. Court extended this streak to a 25-game onbase streak through Aug. 1 (.20, 37-for-88, 8 2B, 3B, 3HR, 19RBI, 10BB, 20K). HOLDING ON: Iowa went a perfect 35-0 when leading after eight innings. Iowa and Omaha (53-0) were the only PCL teams that didn t lose a lead after the eighth. TROPHY CASE: Ryan Court was named the PCL Player of the Week on July 23 after batting.615 (16-for-26) and hitting for the cycle.
