Game Day The University of Massachusetts makes its Atlantic 10 season debut on March 23 and 24 as it travels to Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. The three-game series should prove to be an exciting one as the Owls are picked to finish second in the A-10 behind the defending conference champion Minutewomen. Game time for Saturday s doubleheader is slated for noon. Sunday s single game is also scheduled to start at noon. The Minutewomen take a 24-game win streak into the weekend series. She is just three victories away from getting her 750th win, a feat only 10 active Division I coaches have accomplished. Sortino is ranked 12th in the NCAAfor total wins and 14th for winning percentage.689, ( ) in her 23 seasons. Nanci Lima has recorded nearly half of Temple s wins this season (4-3) and maintains a 5.61 ERA. Defense has been the achilles heal for the Owls as they have committed 58 errors in 26 games for a.931 fielding percentage. A Look Back The Minutewomen are fresh off of a six-day visit to Miami, Fla., in which they captured the Blue & Gold Classic championship, hosted by Florida International University. UMass went, 2-2, in pool play but swept its opponents in bracket action to earn the tournament title. The Minutewomen defeated Missouri-Kansas City, 5-1, in the semi final game and FIU, 2-1, in extra-innings to win the Blue & Gold Classic and avenge both of their earlier tournament loses. UMass also played a doubleheader against Illinois-Chicago and split the series with a, 6-2, win and an, 8-2, loss. A Weekend Of Firsts Last weekend, two Minutewomen recorded their first collegiate hits and one rookie scored the first run of her career. Freshman Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) recorded a single up the middle in the 2-1 extra-inning victory over Florida International on March 17, in the championship game of the Blue & Gold Classic. Freshman Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.) had her first collegiate hit on March 19, in the, 6-2, win over Illinois-Chicago with a single to right field. Rookie Kim Harrington (Reading, Mass.) made her collegiate debut as a pinch runner against Fordham on March 16, and scored a run in the 4-1 victory. Triple Threat Senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) and sophomore Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) have each hit three triples this season to lead the Atlantic 10. Rooney s most recent three-bager was against Missouri-Kansas City on March 18, while Cahalan laced a triple on March 19 against Illinois-Chicago. Turning Up The Heat Defending Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.), got off to a slow start in 2001 with a.132 batting average heading into the Blue & Gold Classic, March A stellar weekend performance, however, including a team-high.444 batting average, inflated her cumulative average to.234 overall, a more than 100-point jump in just eight games. It Must Be In The Grass UMass top three hitters in 2001 are none other than center fielder Teri Rooney (.338), right fielder Anna Perey (Chino Va l l e y, A r i z.) (.323) and left fielder Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.) (.275). The outfield trio represent 37 percent of UMass total hits (59/158), 30 percent of UMass runs scored (25/82) and 25 percent of UMass RBIs (16/63).

Playing With The Best Of The Best The Minutewomen are 2-2 against teams ranked in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll. UMass lost to No. 3 Arizona, 1-0, in eight innings on Feb. 10 and No. 7 Cal State Fullerton, 6-0 on Feb. 22. The Minutewomen defeated No. 2 Stanford, 3-1, March 9 and No. 20 Florida State, 3-2, March 9. Junior ace Kaila Holtz (North Va n c o u v e r, British Columbia) pitched for the Maroon and White in all four of those contests, allowing five earned runs on 24 hits, while fanning 19. Top 25 Poll The Minutewomen were ranked 24th in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 preseason poll. UMass slipped one spot on Feb. 20 after a 3-2 performance at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., losing to UNLV, 6-4, and No. 3 Arizona, 1-0, in extrainnings. The Minutewomen dropped out of the top 25 poll altogether Feb. 27 despite defeating No. 2 Stanford, 3-1, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, Feb. 23. They re Back UMass returns six all-conference players to the squad including Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Scooter Wheeler (3B), and A-10 Pitcher of the Year Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.). The Minutewomen also bring back all-conference selections Anna Perey (RF), Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, A r i z. ) (2B), Teri Rooney (CF) and Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) (SS), 2001 Canadian National Team member Kaila Holtz (P) and 2000 All-American Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) (1B). Hadley Receives All-Tournament Honors Jennifer Hadley was selected to the Seminole Classic All- Tournament team for her performance in three pitching appearances, March Hadley went 2-1 with wins over Southeastern Louisiana (3-0) and Southern Illinois (3-2) to capture the Gold Bracket Consolation Championship. Hadley maintained a 0.38 ERA, allowing 14 hits, one earned run and eight walks, while striking out 15. As The Leadoff Junior short stop and leadoff hitter Emily Robustelli is hitting at a solid.359 (14-for-39) clip when leading off an inning. Teri Rooney, who hits second, and Jamie Cahalan, who bats sixth, are also getting it done at the plate when leading off an inning. Rooney is 7-for-16 (.438) and Cahalan is 9-for-19 (.474). Big D = W Defense is the name of the game for UMass. T h e Minutewomen boast a 10-1 (.909) record when committing one or fewer errors in a game. Their success rate drops to 3-4 (.429) with two errors and 2-5 (.286) with three errors or more.

Right fielder Anna Perey is 13- for-32 (.406), second baseman Ashley Bakken is 11-for-28 (.393), center fielder Teri Rooney is 12- for-30 (.400) and left fielder Aisha Franke is 8-for- 23 (.348). With runners in scoring position, Franke is 7-for-19 (.368) and Rooney is 9-for-23 (.391). With the bases loaded, Bakken is 4-for-8 (.500) and Kaila Holtz is 2-for-5 (.400). Get The Early Lead The Minutewomen are 7-2 (.778) when leading after the first inning and have nine start-to-finish wins this season. When UMass holds the lead through the sixth inning, they are 12-1 (.923). Lucky No. 5 The Minutewomen are 11-2 (.846) when leading after the fifth inning. They are 6-0 (1.000) when scoring five or more runs and are 2-0 (1.000) in five-inning games this season. Moving Up The All-Time Charts Teri Rooney leads the team in hits this season with 17. This brings her career total to 183, ninth all-time at UMass. All-American Kim Gutridge ( ) holds the No. 1 spot with 262 career hits. Scooter Wheeler has nine RBIs this season to bring her career total to 117. She holds the fifth best career total and is chasing all-time leader Gutridge with 131. Wheeler had 43 RBIs in Jen Hadley has fanned 49 batters in 11 games for a career mark of 278 strikeouts. She has the sixth most of any pitcher in school history. Kaila Holtz has also struck out 49 batters in seven appearances this season. Her career total stands at 268, which ranks seventh all-time. Danielle Henderson holds the UMass strikeout record with 1,343 between Kelly Daut ( ) ranks second with 491. Eight-peat The Minutewomen were picked to finish first once again in the Atlantic 10 Conference after winning the last seven consecutive conference championships and 14 of the last 16. The two years UMass did not win the conference title (1988, 1994), it was A-10 runner-up. UMass dominated conference play in 2001, easily sweeping its opponents for an unblemished 21-0 record.
