DON T CALL IT A COMEBACK: The Cardinals scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings last night to rally past the Yankees 3-2 at Roger Dean Stadium. The win marked the 20th comeback win for Palm Beach this season. CF Charlie Tilson drove in the tying run on an infield single in the seventh inning and 2B Bruce Caldwell scored the go-ahead run on a Tampa error in the eighth. HOME RUN DERBY: LF David Popkins launched a solo home run in the second inning on Wednesday night to put the Birds in front 1-0. It was his second consecutive game with a homer. The Cardinals have gone deep in a season-high eight straight games dating back to July 9. Seven different players have combined for 10 long balls over the span. The team leads the league with 13 dingers in July and are tied for second overall this season with 53. QUALITY PITCHING: LH Jimmy Reed was terrific on the mound once again for Palm Beach last night. The lefty surrendered two runs on nine hits over 7.2 innings, didn t issue a free pass and fanned four. In his first four starts for Palm Beach this season, Reed is 3-0 with four quality starts. He has recorded 19 strikeouts compared to just one walk. WORST TO FIRST: Since dropping to a seasonworst eight games below.500 (18-26) on May 19, the Cardinals have won 37 of their last 50 games. TAMPA: Today s games marks the sixth of eight meetings this season between the Cardinals and the Yankees. The Yankees lead the season series 4-1 after sweeping the Cardinals in Tampa from May Palm Beach lost three games by one run, including an 18-inning heartbreaker on May 16, and another game by just two runs in that series. Since 2005, the Cards have won just one season series against the Yanks ( 05) and are overall over the span. Last year, the teams split the season set 4-4. ERA LEADERS: The Palm Beach pitching staff currently leads the Florida State League with a 2.47 ERA in July. The next closest team is Tampa with a 3.10 mark. The Cardinals have had the best pitching unit since the beginning of May and RH Nick Petree is a big reason why. Since transferring to Palm Beach from Low-A Peoria on May 4, Petree owns the thirdbest ERA in the league (1.67). FIRST TO THE PUNCH: The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead last night on Popkins home run. Palm Beach has scored the first run in a game more times (58) than any team in the league this year. They are 22-4 when doing so at home. HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals have the third-best home record in the league this season (29-15). The squad is an impressive 16-3 at Roger Dean Stadium over its last 19 games in Jupiter dating back to May 25. TILSON TIDBITS: CF Charlie Tilson is batting.357 (40-for-112) with 19 runs, 16 RBI and three home runs in 27 games since the FSL All-Star break. He ranks sixth in the league with a.314 batting average this season. BULLPEN BEST: The Palm Beach bullpen has been solid in the last five games. The group has allowed just one run in 12.1 innings of work and has fanned 17 batters compared to just two walks over the span.
2 TODAY S STARTING PITCHER #16 KYLE HELISEK (4-4, 3.24) Height: 6-0 Weight: 170 Throws: Left Bats: Right Born: April 23, 1990 Opening Day Age: 23 Resides: Cranberry Township, PA LH Kyle Helisek makes his 16th start of the season for the Palm Beach Cardinals today against the Yankees. Helisek last pitched on July 10th at Roger Dean Stadium against the Fort Myers Miracle. He gave up two home runs in a game for the first time this season. Adam Brett Walker and Travis Harrison took two consecutive pitches from Helisek deep over the wall in the second inning to help the Miracle jump out to a 4-0 lead. A late Palm Beach rally fell short and Fort Myers won the game 5-4, handing Helisek the loss. Overall, he tossed five innings, allowed four runs three earned on seven hits. The Cardinals are 7-8 when Helisek starts this season. FIRST IMPRESSION: Helisek was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 30th round 930th overall of the June, 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Villanova University. The left-hander made his professional debut on June 23, 2012 for Short-Season Batavia. He allowed two runs on one hit in 3.1 innings of relief against the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League. The Muckdogs won the game 5-3 in 10 innings. Helisek notched his first professional win on July 5 after tossing four scoreless innings of relief against the Connecticut Tigers. He finished the season with a 4-2 record and a 3.42 ERA (21ER/55.1IP) in 12 games 10 starts. MIDWEST LEAGUE STANDOUT: Helisek spent the entire 2013 season with Low-A Peoria in the Midwest League. The 6-0, 170 pound hurler turned in an excellent season, posting a 3.13 ERA (45ER/129.1IP) in 23 games all starts. Helisek finished sixth in the Midwest League in ERA and ranked fifth in strikeouts/9ip (7.03). Among Cardinals minor league pitchers, he ranked fifth in ERA, sixth in games started (23), and eighth in innings (129.1) and strikeouts (101). HOT SUMMER NIGHTS: Helisek was on fire during the months of June and July last season. In nine starts, he boasted a 1.59 ERA (9ER/51.0IP). He put up six quality starts during the span, including three straight starts of seven innings with only one earned run allowed. Helisek fanned a career-high eight batters over six shutout innings against the Clinton LumberKings on June 13 in a winning effort. VS. TAMPA: Today s game will be Helisek s second career start against the Tampa Yankees. Helisek made his only other start against the Yankees on May 16 earlier this season. He allowed three runs on three hits over five innings, walked three and fanned three. Helisek was perfect through three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. He left with the Cardinals ahead 4-3 but didn t factor into the decision when Tampa came back and won it in an 18-inning marathon, 7-6. HELISEK S 2014 STARTS FOR PALM BEACH Date Opponent Score Dec.
