2 2003 SEASON A NOTES GENERAL PREVIEW COACHES/STAFF PLAYERS REVIEW OPPONENTS NCAA HISTORY Overall Record: Pacific-10 Record: 5-7 (fifth) NCAA Regional: 4-0 College World Series: 1-2 (t-fifth) A RETURN TO THE SERIES: The Washington softball team won the No. 5 Regional Tournament in Lincoln, Neb., to advance to its sixth Women's College World Series. The fifth-seeded Huskies defeated No. 4 Oklahoma, 3-1, in the opener before dropping a pair of 2-1 ballgames to No. 1 Arizona and No. 2 UCLA. CONSECUTIVE NCAA APPEARANCES: Washington's 10 consecutive regional appearances ties with Oklahoma for the fourth longest active string in NCAA softball. REGIONAL RECAP: Washington entered the 2003 Regional Tournament in Lincoln, Neb. as the No. 1 seed and swept the field, 4-0, to earn its sixth bid to the Women's College World Series. The Huskies defeated Creighton, 5-1 and notched three consecutive mercy-rule shutouts over Mississippi State, 8-0 (6), and Iowa 11-0 (5) and 11-0 (6). Kristen Rivera and Tia Bollinger were named Co-MVP's of the tournament and Jaime Clark and Aimee Minor were named to the all-tournament team. The Huskies outscored their opponents MERCY, MERCY ME: The Huskies have posted 11 mercy-rule victories this season. Three of those mercy-rules came at the Regional Tournament to set a Husky postseason record. Washington run-ruled Mississippi State, 8-0 in six innings and Iowa, twice, 11-0 in five innings and 11-0 in six innings. RIVERA TIES HOME RUN RECORD: With a home run against against Arizona at the College World Series, Kristen Rivera set the UW single-season home run record with 25 blasts. Rivera finished the season tied with Arizona s Lovieanne Jung for the national home run lead. BOLLINGER BLANKS 'EM: Tia Bollinger tossed three consecutive shutouts at the NCAA Regional Tournament to earn Co- MVP honors and bring her season total to 10. Overall, Bollinger has blanked 24 opponents in her career, which ranks fifth on the Husky charts. ROAD TESTED: Washington spent 13 of the season's 16 weeks on the road. The Huskies logged 29,498 air miles in that time, visiting eight states (Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oregon.), not including miles shuttled between airports, restaurants and hotels. In that time, UW has picked up three tournament titles and has posted a (.759) record, proving that life on the road isn't necessarily a disadvantage. LAST TEAM STANDING: UW was the last undefeated team in the nation in The Huskies played for exactly a month (Feb. 7-Mar. 6) before suffering its first loss to Northwestern to snap a 19-game winning streak. Washington had a mark during those first four weeks with the tie against Minnesota at the Arizona Pepsi Classic. Rain delayed the tournament schedule and the Huskies and Gophers were forced to rule a game locked in a 5-5 tie in the ninth over so each team could make its scheduled flight home. GOING YARD: Washington belted seven home runs at the NCAA Regional Tournament and three more at the College World Series to set a UW record. Kristen Rivera blasted four homers, while Jaime Clark hit three, Kathy Fiske added two and Aimee Minor belted one out of the park. The previous record of eight home runs was set during the 2000 postseason. Washington tallied 75 home runs on the season. ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS: Eight Huskies were named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team, including first team selections Jaime Clark and Kristen Rivera. Clark received her fourth All-Pac-10 honor after leading the Huskies to their 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and a No. 1 seed. Rivera earned her second All-Pac- 10 nod after being the only freshman to be a first team pick in The Huskies have had 77 players earn Pac-10 All-Conference honors in its 11-year history. ALL-PACIFIC REGION: Two Washington softball players were among the 26 players named to the 2003 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Pacific Region team. Kristen Rivera was a first team selection, while Tia Bollinger was a second team pick. Overall, the Huskies have had 42 players earn All-Pacific Region honors. Jaime Clark finished her Husky career with 243 RBIs, which set a UW record and ranks sixth on the NCAA all-time list. FIGHTING LIKE CATS AND DAWGS: In the final Pac-10 game of the season, Washington and Arizona played a three-hour slugfest with the Wildcats coming out on top, After the Huskies ran away with the 7-1 victory in the opener of the doubleheader, Arizona tossed its third-string pitcher and UW let four position players try a hand at collegiate pitching in an effort to saves its aces for regional competition. The teams played to a tie in the seventh before UA's Jackie Coburn hit a game-winning grand slam off Washington's starting left fielder to end the game. The Huskies broke just two records in the game, including most runs scored by an opponent and combined runs (38). CAREER RBI RECORD: Jaime Clark hit her 68th career home run versus Oregon on May 4 for her 228th career RBI. She now tops the Washington all-time chart with 243 RBIs and ranks sixth on the NCAA career list. Former Huskies Jen Cline ( , 227 RBIs) and Michelle Church ( , 225) rank ninth and 10th on the NCAA RBI list. A PAIR OF ACES IN THE CIRCLE: Washington was the only team in the Pac-10 with two 15+ game winners and two pitchers with 150 or more strikeouts. Junior Tia Bollinger was 28-9 with a team-high 207 strikeouts and 1.32 earned run average. Sophomore Ashley Boek was 18-6 with 176 strikeouts in 166 innings.
