1 Corpus Christi (17-14) at San Antonio (21-10) Tuesday, May 8, 2018 Wolff Stadium San Antonio, TX 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 9-5 Home 8-9 Road Series 1-1 Sweeps L 3 Streak 1-4 Last Last 10 SLAM VAULTS MISSIONS...AGAIN: For the second time in the past three days, San Antonio swatted a walk-off grand slam to stun Corpus Christi. Ty France turned the trick Monday night, turning a two-run Hooks lead into a 5-4 Missions triumph. Riley Ferrell walked the first two hitters in the Missions ninth. Lefty Sean Stutzman then entered from the Hooks bullpen. Stutzman jumped ahead of Josh Naylor 0-2, but later struck the San Antonio three-hole hitter with 1-2 curveball. France was next and belted an 0-1 pitch over the left-field fence to end the game. Stutzman surrendered the grand slam to Kyle Overstreet that gave the Missions a 9-8 win Saturday night. Stephen Wrenn put the Hooks in front in the third by cracking a two-run double to left field off Cal Quantrill. Corpus Christi netted two more in the sixth. Josh Rojas opened with a double and, one out later, Ryne Birk was walked intentionally. Randy Cesar and Nick Tanielu followed with RBI singles gave the Hooks a 4-0 lead. Akeem Bostick and Erasmo Pinales teamed to strand nine Missions over the first seven innings. Bostick struck out six over 4 1/3 frames. 2 PAGE 2 FRESH ARM: RHP Justin Ferrell was promoted from High-A Buies Creek to Corpus Christi on Tuesday. The 24-year-old went 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA in 7 appearances (16.2 IP) with Buies Creek to begin the season, allowing just 6 hits and striking out 24 batters. He registered a.109 batting average against and 0.60 WHIP, last appearing on May 3 at Down East (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H). Ferrell is a native of Wagoner, OK and was selected by the Astros in the 36th round of the June 2014 draft from Connors State College. He went 7-5 with a 4.26 ERA in 28 games (8 GS) with Buies Creek in Ferrell spent 2015 and 2016 with Quad Cities, posting a 4.74 ERA (62.2 IP) in 2016 and a 1.95 ERA (64.2 IP) in He began his pro career with the GCL Astros in RHP Kevin Hill was also placed on the 7-day disabled list on Tuesday. NOT SO GRAND: The Hooks have lost a pair of games at Wolff Stadium this series on walk-off grand slams. On Saturday night, Kyle Overstreet capped a six-run ninth inning with a slam to left field to give San Antonio a 9-8 win. On Monday, Ty France belted a walk-off slam to left field to vault the Missions to a 5-4 victory. Both home runs were allowed by LHP Sean Stutzman, who entered Saturday s game with the bases loaded and Monday s game with two runners aboard. In another twist, the grand slam swings were the only hits allowed of either frame. THREE S COMPANY: The Hooks have now dropped 3 consecutive contests, marking just the second time that s happened in The other instance was April 8-10 at Arkansas. GOING BATTY: The Hooks offense has consistently been one of the best units in the Texas League, trending towards the top of the circuit in a number of different categories: 1st in team batting average (.288), 2nd in runs scored (176), and tied-2nd in triples (11). The Hooks also lead the circuit in stolen bases (44) and on-base percentage (.364). ROJAS ROCKIN : IF Josh Rojas joined the Hooks last week from High-A Buies Creek. He s 7-for-20 with 2 doubles, 1 triple and 3 RBIs in 5 games to begin his Hooks tenure. Rojas batted.311 with 20 runs, 11 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run, and 10 RBIs in 24 games for Buies Creek to start the season. The Arizona native worked 15 walks against 13 strikeouts in A-ball. Rojas also swiped 12 bags without being caught for the BC Astros. The 23-year-old was taken last year in the 26th round out of the University of Hawaii. Rojas played in 52 games for Quad Cities after being drafted, and closed out his first pro campaign by going 4-for-12 in the Pacific Coast League with Fresno. JAMES GOES WEST: RHP Josh James was promoted to AAA Fresno prior to Sunday s contest. James posted a 2.49 ERA in 21.1 IP with the Hooks. James earned Texas League Midseason All-Star honors in 2017, going 4-8 with a 4.38 ERA in 21 games (11 GS) with Corpus Christi. In a corresponding move, RHP Riley Ferrell was activated from the disabled list. Ferrell, who had last appeared on April 19, tossed 0.1 IP and gave up 2 ER in Monday night s contest at San Antonio. RUNNING WILD: Corpus Christi continues to lead the Texas League with 44 stolen bases. The Hooks have the top-2 stolen base leaders in the circuit with Myles Straw (16) and Stephen Wrenn (8). CAN T STOP THE BROCK: Corpus Christi s pitching staff has a combined 3.89 ERA, which ranks 2nd among Texas League ranks. A big reason for that success has been the early season performance of veteran RHP Brock Dykxhoorn, who allowed 2 ER in 3 innings on Sunday in San Antonio. Dykxhoorn is now 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 26.1 IP. He ranks 2nd among Texas League arms in ERA. YA GOTTA HAVE HART: Left-hander Ryan Hartman also was solid on Sunday at Wolff Stadium, tossing 5 innings while giving up just 2 ER. Hartman is now 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA in 24.2 IP. His ERA ranks 5th-best in the Texas League. DROPPIN DIMES: Myles Straw has recorded 3 outfield assists in the last 4 games. The Bradenton, FL native now leads the Texas League with 7 outfield assists and is on pace to shatter the franchise s single-season record for outfield assists. Ramon Leaureano (2017) and Jon Gaston (2010) are tied for the single-season record with 16 outfield assists. TOO MUCH RELIEF: Corpus Christi s bullpen has chewed up 27.1 IP over the last 4 games, including 3.2 IP in Monday night s game.
