They will be going from Chicago temperatures in the 20s to mid-50s and sunshine. Leading the way for the 2013 Blue Demons is second-team All-American Kirsten Verdun who was from the pitching circle last season with a 1.62 ERA. She set season records for starts (42) and innings pitched (272). The junior from Coal City, Ill. was No. 17 in the nation in shutouts, No. 19 in wins and No. 25 in strikeouts. She also hit.363 and led the team in home runs (11) and RBIs (41). Other top returnees include Megan Coronado (.395), Samantha Dodd (.329), Mary Connolly (.288, five HRs, 31 RBIs) and Allie Braden (.279). Three Decades Plus: DePaul coach Eugene Lenti will begin his 32nd season heading up the Blue Demon program, and the Hall of Famer has amassed an extraordinary career record of 1, he is the fifth winningest active coach in the nation... Lenti has led DePaul to the NCAA tournament in 15 of the last 16 years, four times qualifying for the Women s College World Series... in three of the last five seasons, the Blue Demons have won either a BIG EAST regular-season title or BIG EAST Conference Championship tournament title... Lenti and his assistant coaches have been honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year three times. Making Her Mark: Besides the season bests, Verdun s 266 strikeouts in 2012 were the second-highest, singleseason mark in DePaul history... she is also No. 3 in complete games for a season (35), third in strikeouts looking (63), fifth in appearances (43) and tied for fifth in shutouts (12). Verdun Watch: Verdun was among the top 50 players in the nation included in the preseason Watch List for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award presented by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) and USA Softball... former DePaul assistant coach Cat Osterman won the award three times (2003, 2005, 2006). Preseason Poll: The Blue Demons (36-22, 14-8 in the BIG EAST) were picked to finish fourth in preseason balloting of the league s coaches... they designated USF as the preseason favorite to capture the league s regular-season title... Notre Dame was chosen to finish second while Louisville was ticketed for the third spot. 2 National Radar: The Blue Demons received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 preseason poll... Lenti & Co. were No. 33 in the NFCA poll... DePaul will play five teams in ESPN.com/ USA Softball Top 25 and five in the USA Today/NFCA Top in addition, the Blue Demons will encounter six teams receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA rankings and five teams receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll... Two years ago, DePaul was ranked No. 24 in the final USA Today/NFCA poll and was among the final 20 teams in the NCAA tournament. Road Warriors: DePaul could be nicknamed Mileage Plus as it will play its first 28 games away from Cacciatore Stadium... that is among the longest season-opening road stretches in the nation... overall, the Blue Demons will play 39 road games. Inside the Blue Demons: Five of DePaul s returning starters (Verdun, Dodd, Coronado, Braden, Connolly) were among the top six hitters in the 2012 lineup... Coronado has the highest batting average among the returnees at.395 and is followed by Verdun at.363, Dodd at.329, Connolly at.288 and Braden at Verdun was tops in power numbers with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs... Dodd had 57 hits, scored 31 runs and drove in 20 runs... Verdun led the team in hits with 61 while Dodd was second and Connolly third among returnees with Verdun also had a team-leading 29 walks... the Blue Demons out-hit their opponents and out-scored them the Blue Demons hit 35 home runs while allowing DePaul owned a edge in RBIs and had 406 hits to 314 for the opposition... in the pitching circle, Verdun was with a 1.62 ERA and 35 complete games... she held opponents to a.204 batting average... Hannah Penna went 4-2 with a 3.04 ERA... the Blue Demons finished with a 2.22 team ERA while their opponents had a 3.17 team ERA... DePaul made just 40 errors while opponents committed 71 errors... those errors led to 52 unearned runs for the Blue Demons. Power Staff: Lenti has plenty of support from assistant coaches Nancy Evans and Samantha Findlay. Evans is a former Honda Award winner as NCAA Player of the Year in softball... she played on three NCAA champion teams at Arizona from , and her career pitching record is No. 1 in NCAA softball history. She is also among the alltime leaders in career wins... the two-time, NCAA first team All-American and NCAA first team Academic All-American served as an assistant coach at Arizona from in that span, she helped lead the Wildcats to three national championships, one runner-up finish and a pair of third-place finishes... Findlay was the Blue Demons Director of Softball Operations in 2011 after serving two seasons as volunteer assistant coach... an All-American first baseman at Michigan, Findlay hit the game-winning, three-run home run in 2005 in leading the Wolverines to their first NCAA Championship softball title... she was named the NCAA Tournament s Most Outstanding Player... Findlay graduated from Michigan as the career leader in home runs (62), RBIs (219) and walks (157). UCF Report: The Knights return five starters from the ballclub that went last season... ace Mackenzie Audas was with a 1.28 ERA and 279 strikeouts in 229 innings... Farrah Sullivan hit.292 with 13 doubles, six home runs and 35 RBIs... Kahley Novak is back after batting.278 with 17 stolen bases and 16 RBIs... the Knights will look to reload with a huge incoming recruiting class of 13 freshmen including three pitchers. Scouting UNLV: The Rebels welcome back eight starters from a team last season that includes pitcher Amanda Oliveto who led the team in wins with 13 and in ERA at last year s leading hitter, Stefany Valentino (.341) returns along with top home run hitter and run scorer Tayler Aleman (10 HRs, 45 runs) and Pauline Monreal who led the Rebels in RBIs with 30 and doubles with eight... Jaexie Balilea returns after leading the team in hits with 45. Lowdown on Louisville: The Cardinals are loaded with eight returning starters from last year s 55-5 team that opened the season with a 28-game winning streak... DePaul ended the winning streak at its home opener... heading up this year s team is third-team All-American Taner Fowler (.366), all-great Lakes Region first-teamer Alicja Wolny (.387), second-team, All-Region Katie Keller (.277) and all-big EAST selections Whitney Arion (.289), Caralisa Connell (19-1, 1.55 ERA), BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player Jordan Trimble (.410) and Jennifer Esteban (.335). Minnesota Matchup: The Golden Gophers enter the 2013 season with eight returning starters from the team that went last season... that gave Minnesota its first back-toback, 30-win seasons since 2003 and the Gophers will be tough whenever junior ace Sara Moulton is in the pitching circle... last year, the right-hander was with a 1.52 ERA, 302 strikeouts in 253 innings and pitched a no-hitter at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic... she was third-team, All-Big Ten along with sophomore infielder Tyler Walker who batted.380 with nine doubles, nine home runs, 29 RBIs and 16 stolen bases... other key returnees include Katie Richardson (.338, 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 38 RBIs) and Kari Dorle (.268, 10 HRs, 47 RBIs). Red Raider Rundown: Texas Tech edged DePaul 2-1 last year at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic and went on to finish and advanced to the NCAA Regionals... the Red Raiders had a record in the rugged Big 12 Conference... their top three hitters are back, and it s quite an impressive trio... Adriana Perez batted.351 last season with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs... Mikey Kenney hit.314 with 13 home runs and 31 RBIs... Sandy James batted.301 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs... those three combined for 39 of the team s 66 home runs and totaled 131 RBIs... in the circle, ace Cara Custer returns after posting a record of last season with a 2.33 ERA.
