1 MEDIA INFORMATION Winston-Salem Dash (17-35, 5th, 13.0 GB / Southern) Carolina League Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (26-25, 3rd, 5.0 GB / Northern) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 52 Road Game No. 26 BB&T Ballpark Wednesday, May 31, :00 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: AWAY: STREAK: L 1 LAST 5: 3-2 LAST 10: 7-3 ON THE ROAD AGAIN: After a seven-game home stand that saw the Wilmington Blue Rocks go 4-3 against the Frederick Keys and the Potomac Nationals, the Blue Crew enjoyed a travel day on Tuesday and start a seven-game road trip against Southern Division opponents in the Winston-Salem Dash and Down East Wood Ducks tonight. The Rocks open with a four-game set against the Dash, who owns the worst record in the league, and then finish the trip with a three-game set against Down East. Wilmington is five games back of first place Salem with 19 contests remaining in the season s opening half. NICKY KNOWS HOW IT S DONE: Nicky Lopez extended his on-base streak to 28 games with a walk in the first inning on Monday. The shortstop ultimately reached base three times, adding a hit and a walk to his ledger in the loss. Lopez continues to chase teammate Anderson Miller for the longest on-base streak for any Blue Rock hitter and for any hitter in the Carolina League this season (30 games). Lopez strung together a 30-gamer of his own last season in his first year in professional baseball with the Burlington Royals. Lopez has hit in all but six games this season and has reached in every game but two. He has also reached safely in his first at bat of the game in eight straight contests. BRANDON IS BACK: Brandon Downes returned to the Blue Rocks active roster after missing the last six weeks due to a broken hammate bone, which he suffered against the Carolina Mudcats on April 11. Downes had started the season 5-for-18 with a homer, two triples, an RBI and two runs scored in five games with Wilmington. Last season Downes led the Blue Rocks with 12 homers, but also batted just.230 and struck out 170 times in 130 games. The University of Virginia product played in one game with Wilmington in 2015, and got a cup of coffee at the end of last season with Triple-A Omaha. To make room on the roster for Downes, the Royals released Blue Rocks outfielder Tanner Stanley. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 24 one-run games so far in No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 19 single-score affairs. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the Rocks are just 9-14 in such contests, but have won five of the last seven. Wilmington has also played in six extra innings affairs already in 2017-the second-most in the Carolina League. The Rocks are just 2-4 in those games not completed in regulation. AMAZING IN MONTH OF MAY: The Blue Rocks offense continues to roll through the month of May, averaging almost 4.5 runs per game. Wilmington has scored doubledigit runs in five of their 28 games played this month. Entering May the Rocks had gone 54 consecutive contests without plating 10 runs. Wilmington is currently hitting.275 in the second month of the season, which is 59 points higher than the.216 average the team posted in April. As a result, the Rocks are in the month, which is tied for the best record in the Carolina League (with Lynchburg). LOVING THE LONG BALL: Over the Blue Rocks first 26 games of the season the Blue Crew had hit just 11 home runs, the second-fewest in the Carolina League. But over the last 25 games Wilmington has blasted 22 more long balls. Anderson Miller has clubbed five of the homers over this stretch. Miller has seven on the season after hitting just three during the entire second half with Wilmington last year. Chase Vallot is not far off of Miller s scorching pace, hitting four homers during Wilmington s power surge. Roman Collins, Cody Jones and Nicky Lopez have also clobbered two during the stretch. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: We were very poor executing on offense (on Monday). Getting runners in, getting them over, little things that win ball games. That s how you lose one-run games. Our situational hitting was poor. Just taking what they give you, that is the key to me. We failed at that aspect of the game (on Monday), going 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position, and that s not counting the guys getting them over. When you do those things, like we have been doing, you win the game. When you don t do them, it shows...i love our bullpen right now. Matt Tenuta was here last year as a starter, made the Double-A team and started. He had a couple hiccups and they sent him down. He is going to be in the bullpen with us and they will see how he does out of the bullpen. He was absolutely outstanding (Monday). I saw a good fastball, he was more aggressive (on difference in Tenuta between last year and this year). He ended up getting a lot of strikeouts and was just trying to throw strikes. He gets in trouble when he starts trying to be perfect, misfiring and getting in hitter s counts. He was in pitcher s counts almost the whole time out there. I loved his aggressiveness, he came out and made his pitches. That was a big difference from what we saw last year... Never being out of a game is a great mindset to have, but we can t rely on coming back from three runs, two runs. We have to rely on getting runners in earlier in the game, getting on the board, trying to play with a lead. It s very tough to keep trying to come from behind. Tonight s Starters WS: RHP Dane Dunning (1-0, 5.79 ERA) vs. WIL: RHP Andres Machado (1-4, 4.15 ERA) The Kansas City Royals signed then 17-year-old Andres Machado as an international free agent out of Venezuela on November 17, Machado spent his first two professional seasons in the Dominican Summer League before coming to the states for two years in the Appalachian League with the Burlington Royals. His career was progressing at a good pace before an injury slowed his momentum in Machado underwent Tommy John Surgery, costing him the entire season. He returned in 2016 and made 13 starts for the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League before starting his first year of full-season ball with Wilmington this April. Machado opened the season as a reliever, posting a 1-4 mark and a 4.15 ERA in 12 appearances out of the bullpen. The six-foot, 175-pound right-hander has plenty of experience in the rotation however, having started 28 of his 66 professional games. Machado takes the rotation spot of 2014 first-round pick Foster Griffin, who was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on May 28. The Carabobo Venezuela native throws a four-seamer, a two-seamer, slider and changeup. Dane Dunning gets the ball tonight for the Winston- Salem Dash. It is his fifth start for Winston-Salem and his first career nod against the Blue Rocks. Dunning was originally selected with the 29th overall pick in the 2016 draft by the Washington Nationals after going 12-6 with a 3.26 ERA in 66 games over three seasons as a Florida Gator. He pitched nine professional games last season (one in the Gulf Coast League and eight in the New York/Penn League) after throwing 78.2 innings that season out of the pen for Florida. On December 8 he was packaged along with fellow prospect pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez to the White Sox in exchange for outfielder Adam Eaton on December 8. The 22-year-old Orange Park, Florida native entered the season as the 10th-ranked prospect in the White Sox organization according to Baseball America. Dunning began the season at Low-A Kannapolis where he absolutely dominated. He allowed just two total runs and one earned tally in four starts. Dunning struck out 33 and walked only two over 26 frames. That earned him a quick promotion to the Carolina League, where things have not gone as well. After tossing five scoreless frames in his debut, Dunning has not made it through the fourth inning in his last three starts. He throws a fastball, slider and changeup Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. WS Date Site Result WP LP Save 4/20 WIL W, 1-0 Puckett (2-1) McRee (0-2) Bodner (1) 4/21 WIL L, 4-1 Banks (3-0) Castillo (0-1) Riga (1) 4/22 WIL PPD, make up in doubleheader on April 23 4/23 WIL W, 8-0 Griffin (2-1) Thompson (1-2) 4/23 WIL L, 1-0 (F/11) Valerio (1-1) Kalish (1-0) 5/31 WS 6/1 WS 6/2 WS 6/3 WS Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Thursday, June Winston-Salem, 7:00 p.m. RHP Scott Blewett (3-4, 3.95 ERA) vs. RHP Luis Martinez (0-1, *.** ERA) WGLS-FM 89.7 Friday, June Winston-Salem, 7:00 p.m. LHP Colin Rodgers (1-2, 3.72 ERA) vs. RHP Aaron McRee (1-6, 4.89 ERA) WGLS-FM 89.7 Saturday, June Winston-Salem, 4:00 p.m. RHP A.J. The Dash are led by first year skipper Willie Harris. Harris is a former World Series Champion with Winston-Salem s parent club, the Chicago White Sox, back in During his 12-year career, in the MLB, Harris played with the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, New York Mets and the Cincinnati Reds. He finished as a career.238 hitter and hit 39 home runs and drove in 212 runs in 1,046 games. On the roster, the Dash have five players that are on the White Sox top 30 prospect list, according to MLB Pipeline. Returner Zack Collins (No. 6) is ranked the highest of the group. Collins played in 36 games with Winston-Salem a year ago and hit.258 with six home runs and 18 RBI. Scouts say Collins has a patient approach at the plate and has elite strikezone awareness. Next on the list is outfielder Luis Alexander Basabe (No. 8). Basabe was a main piece in the trade that had Chris Sale change the color sox he wears as he was sent to Boston in one of the bigger trades of the 2016 offseason. Basabe spent time between two levels in the Red Sox system and hit.264 with 12 homers and 53 RBI along with swiping 25 bases. The final position player on the top 30 is Alex Call. Call is in just his second year on the White Sox farm after being drafted by Chicago in the third round of last year s draft out of Ball State. Call played in 10 games so far with the Dash this season but is currently on the disabled list. On the hill, the Dash have a pair of talented arms. Southpaw Aaron Bummer (No. 25) and righty Zach Thompson (No. 30) round out the top 30 representatives for the Dash. Bummer returns to Winston-Salem after spending last year with the team. He went a composite 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA at three stops in the system last year. He appeared in four games with the Dash and posted a 1.80 ERA and 0-1 record. Thompson spent last season between Low-A Kannapolis and Winston-Salem and went a combined 9-8 with a 3.77 ERA in 26 starts. With the Dash, he went 3-5 with a 5.60 ERA in 10 starts. Overall, the Dash have 14 members of the team that spent time with the team a year ago. The bullpen for the Dash have the most familiar faces such as Tanner Banks, Yelmison Peralta, Drew Hasler, Ryan Riga, Kelvis Valerio and Andre Wheeler. Former outfielder Louie Lechich played 39 games with the Dash a year ago, will now try his luck on the mound. Last season he hit just.159 and drove in seven runs as an offensive player for Winston-Salem. Last season, the Blue Rocks and Dash met 15 times last year with Winston-Salem taking the head-to-head match-up 9-6. The Rocks went 4-3 at Frawley Stadium against their Southern Division opponent, but struggled down in Winston-Salem, going just 2-6. This season, the two teams have met already once this year with the teams splitting a four-game series at Frawley Stadium back on April The meeting at Winston-Salem marks the final time the two teams will meet in the regular season.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #43 RHP Andres Machado Acquired: Signed as non-drafted free agent on November, 17, 2010 Born: Carabobo, VZ Age: 24 (April 22, 1993) Resides: Carabobo, VZ Ht: 6 0 Wt: 175 College: N/A Bats/Throws: R/R Pitch Repertoire: Four-Seam Fastball, Two-Seam Fastball, Slider, Changeup THE BOOK ON ANDRES MACHADO: The Kansas City Royals signed then 17-year-old Andres Machado as an international free agent out of Venezuela on November 17, Machado spent his first two professional seasons in the Dominican Summer League before coming to the states for two years in the Appalachian League with the Burlington Royals. The Carabobo, Venezuela native throws a four-seamer, a twoseamer, slider and changeup. LAST TIME OUT: Machado s last outing was sort of his first start. The right-hander took the ball in the resumption of a suspended game against Potomac on Friday. On the books the outing reverts back to May 18 and took place at Pfitzner Stadium, but in reality it was at home and Machado was the first pitcher to take the mound that day. He took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) and fanning four in 3.1 frames. AGAINST WINSTON-SALEM: This will be Machado s first career game against Winston-Salem. BULLPEN TENURE: Machado started the season pitching out of the bullpen and even picked up his first professional save in the United States on April 16 against Potomac. It was his first save anywhere since he was in the Dominican Summer League in Machado s role varied as a reliever. He tossed three or more innings on three occasions, including two outings of 3.1 frames. He also worked one frame or less in four of his 12 appearances Appearances (Wilmington) The Book on Machado (2017) At Home: 1-2, 2.25 ERA 4G/0GS On the Road: 0-2, 5.27 ERA 8G/0GS LH Opp Avg:.225 RH Opp Avg:.277 Record when he pitches: Wilmington Record when he starts: N/A Run Support (overall): N/A Run Support (starting): N/A ERA: 4.15 Season-High K s: 4 Potomac Nationals Career-High K s: 9, 8/28/16 vs. Odgen Raptors Last Win: 4/11/17 vs. Carolina Mudcats Last Loss: Potomac Nationals Most IP, 2017: 3.1 IP, 2x (Last: Salem Red Sox) Most IP, Career: 6 IP: (8/28/16 vs. Ogden Raptors) MACHADO ON DIFFERENCES OF STARTING VS. RELIEVING: This transition is a little bit difficult because I started in the bullpen but now they moved me to the rotation. In spring training, I was looking to be a starter but they made me a reliever. I feel good though because I Career Numbers pitched as a starter the whole season last year in Idaho Falls. It s different because we come in Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP relief against just one or two hitters sometimes. Now I need to think of pitching in a very different style. When you start a game, you need to learn what the hitter is looking for. When you come in 2011/DSL Royals for relief for one hitter, you can throw a slider or something different and it works. As a starter, 2012/DSL Royals you have to face these hitters more than once. So you have to throw strike one, and you have to control your fastball to set other pitches up. It s more of a process. 2013/Burlington /Burlington BIGGEST INFLUENCES ON ANDRES: When asked what pitcher had the biggest impact on him, Machado did not hesitate even for a second. I enjoy watching Felix Hernandez of the Seattle 2015/DNP Due to Injury Mariners, Machado said. He has very good stuff and he is a starter. I like him because he throws 2016/Idaho Falls a lot of strikes, has great stuff and also because his from Venezuela. 2017/Wilmington MACHADO ON TOMMY JOHN IN 2015: It was Tommy John surgery and it is one year Total that you re out and that you can t get back. Last year, I was feeling better and I started, but now I actually feel good again. They said it: Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out...it took its own form (on 62-game on-base streak). I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs...working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out... I know Brandon Phillips doesn t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well. #15 Chris DeVito INF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 220 Age: 22 B/T: L/R Lives: Northridge, CA LG: 0-for-3, BB Homestand:.286 (6-for-21, R, BB, 2 2B, 2RBI, 4 SO) Notes: Selected in the 8th round of the 2016 June MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of New Mexico. A homer at Potomac on 5/19 (2R-HR) -Picked up first multi-hit game with WIL on 5/12 vs. FRE) (2-for-4) -Made Class-A Adv. debut on 5/11 vs. POT and went 1-for-3 with a walk and strikeout. -Played in 30 games with the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League). Hit.347 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI. -Led the South Atlantic League with his 11 HRs, hits (42), RBI, XBH (21) and SLG (.702) -Also was tied for third in the league with his.347 contact-clip. -In his last game with LEX on 5/8 he picked up his first, career four-hit game. (4-for-5, HR) 2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.261 with nine home runs and 50 RBI in 60 games. Led the team in both HR and was ranked second in the league in RBI. They said it: (On what led to great success in Lexington to start the season) Honestly, my teammates. My first couple of games weren t very good and my teammates knew I could do it, they had my back and I couldn t have done it without my teammates and the great coaching staff we have down there...just trying to be as consistent as possible (On what he worked on in the off-season). That s everyone s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible.... I actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I m super excited. It s a great group of guys here...i loved that school (the University of New Mexico). Great school, great place to hit. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(on transition from catcher to first base.)...i absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body...(on being in the cleanup spot in his first Class A Advanced start) I m sure there will be some pregame jitters obviously. First game, new stadium, new guys on the team but it s just baseball. Hopefully we get a win and keep the good vibes going. #34 Roman Collins OF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 210 Age: 22 B/T: L/L Lives: Boca Raton, FL LG: 1-for-3, R, BB Homestand:.363 (8-for-22, R, BB, 3 2B, 3B, 6 SO) Notes: Drafted in the 5th Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Florida Atlantic Univ. Considered one of the best pure hitters in organization last season. Turned down opportunities to play college football. Father played football at West Virginia University Notes: Had three-hit game on FRE. Third three-hit game of the season. -Had 13-game on-base streak end on 4/20 vs. WS. -The streak was tied as the longest on-base streak on the team with D.J. Burt and was the fourthlongest in Carolina League at the time. -Fourth on the team with three home runs. -Fourth on team in runs (21). -Has posted a pair of eight-game hitting streaks this season. Posted two, nine-game H.S. in 2014 with Idaho Falls Notes: Spent the season between the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) and Wilmington Blue Rocks (Adv. A/Carolina League). -Hit.242 with nine home runs and 41 RBI in 111 total games between the two teams. -Started the season with the Blue Rocks hitting.222/0/5 in 21 contests. -Played 90 games with the Legends and hit.246/9/36. -Collected three, four-hit games last year. -Hit.249 vs RHP and.213 vs LHP -Hit.275 on the road (208 ABs) and.207 at home (218 ABs) -Spent the winter in the Australian Winter League with the Melbourne Aces and ranked among league s leaders in total bases (tied for second), batting average (third), hits (third) and runs (tied for fourth) Notes: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit.292 with four home runs and 45 RBI in 68 games. -Ranked tied for fourth among Pioneer League batters in walks (36) during his pro debut. -Finished third on the Chukars in hits (78), second in doubles (18) and fourth in triples (6). -Was the second toughest batter to strike out in the league (every 9.03 at-bats). They said it: I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. I like it here. #26 Brandon Downes OF Ht: 6 3 Wt: 195 Age: 24 B/T: R/R Lives: South Plainfield, NJ LG: 0-for-1, 4/11 vs. CAR Home Stand: Notes: Selected in the 7th round of the 2014 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of University of Virginia. In 2011 he was selected by Boston in the 43rd round of the First- Year Player Draft, but chose to attend the University of Virginia. Sister Kelly played softball at Drexel University Notes: Started the year with Wilmington. Played in five games and hit.278 with two triples and a home run before breaking a bone in his hand. Was placed on disabled list on April Notes: Spent the season with the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Adv. A/Carolina League) and Omaha StormChasers (AAA/Pacific Coast League). -Hit.230 with 12 home runs and 66 RBI in 130 games with Wilmington. -Ranked second among Royals farmhands with 36 doubles, 34 of which came at Wilmington, where he ranked fifth in the Carolina League in two-base hits. -Played in five games with Omaha and hit.308 with a pair of doubles in 13 at-bats. -Had 26 multi-hit games last season. 2015: Spent the season with the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) Wilmington Blue Rocks. -Hit.251 with 14 home runs and 59 RBI in 106 games with Lexington. -Ranked second on team in doubles, home runs and RBI for Lexington. -Played in just one game in Wilmington and in his lone at-bat struck out. -Fell a home run shy of the cycle on 5/15. (5-for-5 3 2B, 3B, RBI) 2014: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit.308 with three home runs and 23 RBI in 41 games. Finished fifth on the team with 13 doubles. They said it: I definitely think it will be a good adjustment for me. I went through the whole first year struggling a little bit. I know the stadiums, the teams, maybe some of the same players are coming back. I think it gives me a little bit of an edge on other guys in the league. I m excited...honestly I went in there carefree. If I get out, it s supposed to happen because I m the guy from A-Ball so I took it the right way. I just went out there and felt comfortable and enjoyed myself. I honestly had no pressure on myself and that s the way I should play here too which is what I m going to try to do. It was enjoyable... The postgame spread was unbelievable. You get big leaguers buying the spread and it is steak and lobster for dinner which was very awesome. The field was incredible. There was a ton more fans I m not saying we have a bad fan base, but it s a step away from the big leagues and kids are going crazy for you. It was cool to be around older guys who have been there or guys that are close to being there. The league itself was very cool. I met one of my teammates from Virginia, Chris Taylor, he got traded to the Dodgers and we were playing them during the six games I was there and it was good to see him. It s a whole different atmosphere. There s 35-year-old guys pitching to you and you do one thing wrong and they know what that weakness it, they can repeatedly make that pitch so it definitely was a big jump but definitely awesome...it s definitely a big thing (playing near hometown). There s a lot of ups and downs, especially if you get homesick, which I haven t gotten that much in my career so far. It s definitely a blessing to have your family come out.

(250 innings) -Threw out 28% of would-be base stealers Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Rookie/Arizona League) and hit.250 with five RBI in 27 games. Made just one error behind the plate. They said it: I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that s helped me relax at the plate... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don t think it would ve been as successful as a game... I think that s the reason why I m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that s what I pride myself on the most... I don t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn t a big stocky dude because I m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long. I love playing baseball and I m looking to that more than anything else and doing what I can to help the club win...i was lucky enough to go to Australia and play in the Australian Baseball League. I kind of got my lower half going, but I m still honing it and trying to get more up the middle. It has allowed me to have a little more power than in the past...(on living in Australia) It was awesome. We got to play with big leaguers and that s special just in itself. We got to see how they conduct themselves. Living in a new country was a lifetime experience...(cultural shocks in Australia) They drive on the wrong side of the road and that took a little while to get used to. Navigating and little things here and there, like stores closing earlier was a little different, but I loved it...last year really helped (on being in WIL for second season and being comfortable in CF at Frawley Stadium). He also stole 24 bases. -Earned MLB.com Organization All-Star and Appalachian League postseason All-Star honors. -Ranked among the league s leaders in runs (54, first), triples (5, tied for first), stolen bases (24, second), walks (35, tied for second), games (62,tied for third) and total bases (99, fifth). -Defensively, paced all shortstops in Appalachian League in fielding percentage. (.981) -Recorded 17 multi-hit games which was tied for team lead. -Had more walks (35) than strikeouts (30). -Hit better against LHP (.316) than against RHP (.270) They said it: On his success last season: I had a little more freedom. The stuff I learned in college ball really helped me mature as a player and really help me deal with adversity. Kind of preserve through the slumps you go through and know how to handle those and I think that was the biggest thing. When things weren t or were going right, just know how to act.... I think it s great. In baseball you have to play defense and offense, especially at the shortstop position. You need to be a good defender, get on base, anyway to help the team win. That s what I try to do day in and day out try to get on base and let the people behind me score me and pick up the ball and help my pitchers out. Anyway to help the team succeed.... Creighton helped me. Freshman year I had the strikeouts, it comes. As I matured my sophomore and junior year I got better a pitch recognition and worked the counts. I got comfortable battling with two strikes and don t be afraid that there are two strikes on you and get nervous. I think that s the biggest thing. Not being afraid with two strikes, work the count as the leadoff hitter and the walks will come....on being rated #13 prospect No I don t think it adds any pressure. I don t try to really read into that stuff. I kind of just play the game and try to help the team win and stay inside the locker room. I don t look too much into that and try to compete and help the team.... I was a big Derek Jeter fan. I used to watch the Yankees a lot and Derek Jeter play. Right now I like Brandon Crawford. I really like how he plays. He s a grinder and would do anything to help the team. It always looks like he has a dirty uniform so I kind of try to emulate that and play the game hard.... I ve never been this far east. It s a new part of America I haven t seen. I ve been and played to the west coast, been to the south but I haven t been this far east so I m just looking forward to meeting the people up here and what they have to offer. #8 Travis Maezes [MAY-zes] INF Ht: 6 0 Wt: 195 Age: 23 B/T: L/R Lives: Ann Arbor, MI LG: 0-for-1, RBI (PH) Homestand:.429 (3-for-7, 3R, 2B, HR, 4RBI, 2SO) Notes: Drafted in the 13th Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by the Royals out of University of Michigan. The long season and bus rides. In college, our travel was much less, the bus rides weren t nearly as long and we didn t play nearly as many games. I feel like that was a huge aspect on top of the better talent that you faced day in and day out... Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year...on going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes...it was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally...for me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself...there s no one specific player for me personally. I m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they re can t miss TV. Watching Miguel Cabrera when I grew up as a Detroit fan and watching him on a daily basis during his Triple Crown season was unbelievable. #24 Anderson Miller OF Ht: 6 3 Wt: 208 Age: 22 B/T: L/L Lives: Lexington, KY LG: 1-for-5 Homestand:.278 (5-for-18, R, 2RBI, 5SO) Notes: Drafted in the 3rd Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City from Western Kentucky Univ. They said it: Luckily, I came back from a labrum surgery early in my career at Western and had some things fall my way and got lucky with that. Got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League my sophomore year. After that, my junior year went well and had a good season and started to hear my name a lot more. I always had a chip on my shoulder going to a smaller school and being a small school guy and I talked to the guys who were drafted before me in Wade Gaynor and Kes Carter were the two guys that went higher and they always played with a chip on their shoulder. I think it helped me get to that position and be blessed with that opportunity...at first in 2015 I got called up there after ten games in with Burlington and it was a little stressful. I really didn t know how to handle that situation. I went back last year and embraced it a lot more and had a lot more fun and stayed loose. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year they had an Anderson Miller bobblehead day and the first pitch of the game, I hit a home run and it was one of the top five moments of my career. It was an amazing opportunity and I know a lot of guys don t get to do that so I took it all in...it goes a long way. We spend so much time together and the closer you are off the field, the better you re going to play together, play for each other, pick each other up and play as a unit. There s not separation in the locker room and from what I see we have a really close knit group and we ve had a lot of fun so far. Even the guys who just jumped on board we got to know a lot in Spring Training. Like Foster (Griffin) said, a lot of us played together and we know how to get along with each other. I m really looking forward to it.

BLUE ROCKS HITTERS NOTES They said it: I don t remember any of the pain (on getting hit in the face by a fastball.) I don t remember the initial impact or five seconds after it happened. The only thing I remember is walking down the third base line into the clubhouse and everything after that. I went to the first hospital and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip....(on getting back in the box): It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it s fine.... Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.... From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.... I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to be soon.
