1 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (80-82) Third Place, National League East Division, Games Manager: Gabe Kapler, 1 st season 2018 SEASON RECAP: The Phillies went (.494) in 2018, their first season reaching the 80- win plateau since 2012 when they went Philadelphia reached sole-posession of first place in the National League East for the first time since the end of the 2011 season as they held the top spot in the division for a total of 35 days 2018 marked Philadelphia s sixth consecutive season under.500 (73-89 in both 2013 & 2014, in 2015, in 2016 and in 2017), which is their longest streak since they posted seven consecutive losing seasons from However, Philadelphia entered play with a.500 record or better in 148 of their 162 games this seaon The Phillies finished 3 rd place in the NL East, 10.0 games behind the Atlanta Braves Overall, the club batted.234 with a.314 OBP,.393 SLG % and a combined.707 OPS Phillies pitchers combined for a 4.14 ERA (665 ER, IP), which included a 4.12 ERA for the starters and a 4.17 mark for the bullpen. PROGRESS IN THE PROCESS: The Phillies tallied 14 more wins than they did a season ago when they went As for run differential, the Phillies improved by 41 runs from 2017 as they improved their run prevention by 54 runs Philadelphia, who matched 2017 s win total of 66 on August 15, didn t notch their 66 th win last year until the final day of the season, October 1 against the Mets, a difference of 47 days on the calendar. A STAR IS BORN: Among all Major League starters, RHP Aaron Nola finished 1 st in bwar (10.5), 4 th in ERA (2.37), T-4 th in starts (33) & quality starts (25), 5 th in IP (212.1) & OPP OPS (.570), 6 th in OPP SLG % (.311), 7 th in WHIP (0.97), T-7 th in wins (17), 8 th in SO (224), OPP AVG (.197) & HR/9.0 IP (0.72), 9 th in pitches/ip (15.1) and T-10 th in win % (.739) Nola was named to his first career All-Star team, the first Phillies starter since Cliff Lee in 2013 He tossed a scoreless 5 th inning with two strikeouts for the NL team as he was summoned to face Salvador Perez, Mookie Betts, Jose Altuve and Mike Trout Nola s 224 strikeouts in 2018 were the second-most ever by a Phillies pitcher 25 or younger, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander s 227 in 1911 Nola s bwar of 10.5 was the most by any pitcher in baseball since 2002 (Randy Johnson, 10.7), most by a Phillies pitcher since 1972 (Steve Carlton, 12.1) and T-7 th highest ever by a Phillies pitcher Further, he joined Walter Johnson (1910, ), Dwight Gooden (1985) and Hal Newhouser (1945) as the only pitchers in baseball with a 10.5 or higher bwar in their age 25 or younger season (age on 6/30) in the modern era (since 1900) Finally, following a Phillies loss, Nola went 10-3 with a 2.17 ERA (28 ER, IP). CY NOLA: On August 23, Aaron Nola beat Max Scherzer in a duel that lived up to the hype and perhaps even eclipsed it How rare was Nola s day? Only twice before had an opposing starter gone in to Nationals Park, tossed at least 8.0 scoreless frames and handed Scherzer an L Prior to Nola, the only other two were Zack Greinke (W, 8.0 IP, 0 R) on July 19, 2015 and Johnny Cueto (W, 8.0 IP, 0 R) July 7, 2015 The epic pitching matchup marked the first time that two starters with a sub-2.25 ERA had squared off with at least innings under their belt in a season since 1985 when STL s John Tudor and NYM s Dwight Gooden faced off in a 1-0 classic at Shea Stadium (9/11/85) Overall, in a combined four starts this season against Cy Young winners (Kershaw, Price, Scherzer 2x), Nola went 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA (3 ER, 29.0 IP) In those four starts, the three pitchers he opposed went a combined 0-1 with a 2.52 ERA (7 ER, 25.0 IP). NOTHING BUT RHYS-PECT: Among all National League players, 1B/OF Rhys Hoskins finished 1 st in pitches per plate appearance (4.42), T-4 th in go-ahead RBI (29), 7 th in walks (87) & XBH (72), T-7 th in HR (34), T-8 th in doubles (38) and 10 th in RBI (96) Philadelphia s nominee for both the Hank Aaron and Roberto Clemente awards, Hoskins was one of five players in MLB with at least 70 XBH and 85 BB (also: Alex Bregman, Jose Ramirez, Matt Carpenter and Paul Goldschmidt) A participant in the Home Run Derby held during All-Star weekend at Nationals Park, Hoskins defeated MIL s Jesus Aguilar in the first round, before falling in the semifinals to CHI s Kyle Schwarber, In doing so, he became the first player in HR Derby history to hit 20 HR in the semifinals and his 37 total HR were the second-most HR by a Phillie in Derby history, trailing only Bobby Abreu in 2005 (41) His.938 OPS (648 PA) was the second-best mark among all Phillies through the first 150 games of a career (dating to 1900), trailing only Hall of Famer Chuck Klein (1.041 OPS) Hoskins reached the 50-homer plateau in only his 192 nd career game, becoming the seventh-fastest player in the history of Major League Baseball to reach his 50 th home run, trailing only Ryan Howard (182 G), Aaron Judge (174 G), Ryan Braun (171 G), Gary Sanchez (161 G), Mark McGwire (161 G) and Rudy York (153 G) Finally, Hoskins reached the 162-game mark in his career on August 16 with the following numbers:.257/.376/.542 with 35 doubles, 43 home runs, 125 RBI and 104 walks Through 162 games, he was one of only two players in MLB history with at least 40 home runs and 100 walks, the other being NYY s Aaron Judge (43 HR, 114 BB) His 104 walks are the most of any Phillies player through 162 (next: Don Hurst, 98 BB) and his 43 home runs and 125 RBI were both 2 nd to only Hall-of-Famer Chuck Klein (44 HR, 131 RBI). CITIZENS BANK SPARK: Philadelphia finished the year with a record (.613 win %) at Citizens Bank Park (not including their neutral site home game against the Mets in Williamsport), their best season at home since 2011 when they went (.642 win %) Philadelphia s.613 winning percentage at CBP this season was their third-best ever record in the ballpark s 15 seasons, behind only 2011 and 2010 Philadelphia finished the year averaging 4.57 runs per game at home which was their highest total since 2010 (4.88 RPG) Despite their struggles on the road this season (31-50), Philadelphia s record in their home ballpark was third-best in the National League behind only the Brewers (51-30,.630 win %) and Cubs (51-31,.622 win %) Per Elias, you have to go all the way back to 1955 to find the last time the Phils finished a season at least 15 games above.500 at home and 15 games under.500 on the road (46-31 at home, on the road). YOUTH GROUP: The Phillies, who began the season with the youngest roster in MLB, collected innings from pitchers age 26 or younger, the second-highest total of any team in the majors (most: PIT, IP) Philadelphia s 130 games started by pitchers 26 or younger led the majors (next: PIT, 122 GS) Offensively, Philly s 3,919 plate appearances by players 26 or younger ranked 2 nd in MLB to only the Cubs (3,989) and their 126 home runs were tied for the most with the Rangers. 2 2018 POSTSEASON NOTES TEAM NOTES PAGE 2 THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE: Philadelphia finished 2018 with 582 walks, its most in a season since 2009, when the club had 589 Carlos Santana (110), Cesar Hernandez (95) and Rhys Hoskins (87) became just the third trio of Phillies with 85 or more walks in one season in franchise history and the first to do so since 2006 (Bobby Abreu 91, Pat Burrell 98, Ryan Howard 108) Santana s 110 walks were the most by a switch hitter in Phillies history and the most by any Phillies player since Pat Burrell had 114 in 2007 Cesar Hernandez s 95 walks would have tied the previous record for a switch hitter, held by Pete Rose in 1979 The Phils were the only team in MLB that had multiple players with 85 or more walks in 2018, let alone three with 85 There were only four other National League players with 85 walks or more: Bryce Harper (130), Joey Votto (108), Matt Carpenter (102) and Paul Goldschmidt (90) Among all ML teams, the Phillies finished 2 nd in pitches per plate appearance (4.01, best: LAD, 4.03) and 4 th in walk rate (9.5%) & walks. ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT: On July 26, left-hander Ranger Suarez made his major league debut in a start against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park Suarez s start broke a stretch of 267 straight games in which the Phillies threw a right-handed starter (last: Adam Morgan, 9/28/16 at ATL) It was the longest such stretch in franchise history, breaking a 172-game righthanded starter streak from 5/26/1907-6/24/1908 It didn t sniff the longest major league streak however, as the Dodgers once went 681 games without a left-handed starter during parts of six seasons from AN INSTANT CLASSIC: On Sunday, August 19, the Phillies and Mets came together at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field for the second Little League Classic game in Williamsport, PA Prior to the game, players from both teams attended various Little League games and also made stops throughout the Little League International Complex Scott Kingery (2006, Ahwatukee, Ariz.) was the lone Phillie to have played in the Little League World Series It was their first neutral site game since Sept. 3, 1957 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, where they were the visiting team against the Brooklyn Dodgers and first as the home team since May 28, 1927 vs Boston Braves at Shibe Park (then home of the A s). A NIGHT TO CELEBRATE: On August 4, Pat Gillick, the architect of the 2008 World Championship team and Roy Halladay, were forever enshrined on the Phillies Wall of Fame Halladay, who pitched four seasons for the Phillies from , won the NL Cy Young award in 2010, was twice named an All-Star while in pinstripes ( ) and authored the 20 th perfect game as well as the second postseason no-hitter in MLB history Following the ceremonies for both men, the Phillies and Marlins squared off in a game that took a mere 2:20 to complete It marked the fastest Phillies/Marlins game since Halladay s perfect game, May 29, 2010 in Miami (2:13) Two other items of note from that night: catcher Bryan Holaday entered the game for Miami as a defensive replacement in the 7 th inning and the Phillies finished the night with 34 at bats. WHAT IF TOLD YOU : In 2018, the Phillies had four different starting pitchers make at least 30 starts in a season for just the sixth time in franchise history (others: 2008, 2003, 1987, 1982 & 1968) Jake Arrieta (31 GS), Aaron Nola (33 GS), Nick Pivetta (32 GS) and Vince Velasquez (30 GS) became the first quartet of Phillies starters to each make 30 turns through a rotation since 2008 when Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer each started 33 games and Kyle Kendrick and Brett Myers both started 30. FORMULA 50: On July 9 th, Philadelphia secured their 50 th win of the season in their 89 th game of the 2018 campaign That is a 44 game improvement from 2017 when the Phillies won #50 in their 133 rd game of the season Only two other Phillies teams in the history of the franchise had a 44 game or better improvement from one season to the next at win #50 In 1993, the Phillies began after going in 1992 (+47) and in 1905, the Phillies began after inexplicably going the year before in 1904 (+62) The last major league team with a 44 game or better improvement at win #50 was the 2011 Pittsburgh Pirates (50-44) who went the year prior in 2010 (+54) July 9 marks the earliest a Phillies team won #50 since the 2011 team did so on June 28 with a record of HOW SWEEP IT IS: Philadelphia s eight sweeps this season were their most since 2011 when they had 11 series sweeps The Phillies tallied seven sweeps prior to the All-Star Break, their most in the first half of a season since 2009 (also 7), per Elias. EXTRA, EXTRA: The Phillies collected at least one extra-base hit in 110 consecutive games (4/4-8/8) which was the second-longest extra-base hit streak in franchise history, shy of only a 129- game streak from It was the longest extra-base hit streak in the majors this season (next: MIN, 74 G, 5/30-8/20). WHAT A RELIEF: The Phillies had nine separate players record at least one save in 2018 (Arano, Dominguez, Garcia, Hunter, Morgan, Neris, Neshek, Ramos, Thompson), tying a franchise record (others: 2007, 1946, 1913)... Philadelphia s 68.8 save percentage (44-64) was the fourth-best mark in the National League CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH: The Phillies finished the 2018 season as the only club in MLB without a single player on the DL It marked the first time since at least 1994, as far as the Phillies internal records go back, that Philadelphia finished a season without a single player on the DL.
