Kansas City jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first when former Tiger, Omar Infante, scored on a sac fly after his one-out triple...starter James Shields blanked the Bengals over the first two innings, but they scored a pair in the third and added three more in the fourth before pulling away with a 3-spot in the seventh...all told, Shields was solved for 8 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits over 6.1 innings with a walk and season-low matching 3 K s...infante had a pair of hits against his old mates, while Billy Butler snapped his season-opening homerless drought with a solo shot into the leftfield bleachers to open the fourth...after that blast, Detroit pitchers combined to retire the 18 consecutive Kansas City hitters. FOUR WOULDN T HAVE BEEN NEARLY ENOUGH--Kansas City s offensive line of demarcation between winning and losing through the first 28 games has been the 4-run threshold, but the Royals fell well shy of that figure last night...kc is now 0-14 when being held under the 4-run mark, but has gone 14-0 when putting up a 4-spot...last season, the Royals were an amazing 51 games over.500 when scoring at least four runs with a mark, while going with three runs or fewer. INTERLEAGUE PLAY OPENS NEXT TRIP--The Royals are one of five big league clubs who have yet to play the other league (Oakland, Atlanta, St. Louis and Arizona are the others), but that will change on Monday when Kansas City opens a 3-game series in San Diego...the Royals were 9-11 vs. the National League last year, their fifth consecutive sub-.500 year against the Senior Circuit...the last winning season against the N.L. was 2007 when KC dominated with a 13-5 mark...kansas City s alltime Interleague mark is , including a record on the road...this year s Interleague work is concentrated against the N.L. West with trips to San Diego, Arizona and Colorado, while the Dodgers, Giants and Rockies visit Kauffman Stadium...the Royals will also play four games in a home and home series against their cross-state rivals from St. Louis. A WEEK AWAY AHEAD--The Royals will takeoff following tomorrow s matinee for a tour of the left coast, playing three in San Diego starting Monday night and then heading north to Seattle for a 4-game stop in Safeco Field...Kansas City will be looking for its first-ever victory in San Diego, going 0-6 in a pair of previous stops there, the most recent in the Mariners haven t treated the Royals much better over the last couple of seasons, with KC going just 1-6 in Seattle dating back to the Royals will return home on Tuesday, May 13 for their first 3-team stand, hosting Colorado (2), Baltimore (4) and the White Sox (3). NED TO MANAGE 1,600TH--Tonight is the 1,600th game that manager Ned Yost has been at the helm over his 11 seasons of managerial experience...the first six years came in Milwaukee, where he compiled a ledger over 959 games and then he was named to this role on May 13, 2010, nearly four full years ago, and has gone tonight is his 648th contest as the skipper of the Royals. BUENO REHABS TONIGHT--Lefthanded reliever Francisley Bueno will start his assignment tonight in Omaha...he has been down since April 7 with a contusion and sprain on his left little finger...cain hit the shelf on April 16...Lorenzo Cain made his first rehab start as the DH last night for the Chasers, going 0-for-4. BACK IN THE STARTING ROLE--Danny makes his first start of the year tonight after six relief outings...from , Danny had 31 starting assignments as a member of the Royals rotation, going 8-10 with a 4.75 ERA (83 ER in IP)...he compiled a career-high 20 starts during his rookie year in after opening the 2012 season in the rotation, Danny suffered an elbow injury and missed the remainder of the year, having Tommy John surgery on June 13...he returned to the Royals on August 7 of last year, going 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA (5 ER in 24.1 IP) in five starts. OUT OF THE PEN--Duffy entered the year having never pitched out of the bullpen at the Major League level, but has made six relief appearances after being recalled from Omaha (AAA) on April 12...in his first four appearances, he 8.1 shutout innings allowing only 5 hits...he earned his first win out of the pen on April 16, tossing a pair of scoreless frames in KC s 6-4 triumph in 11 innings at Houston...however, in his last two appearances, he s allowed three runs while failing to record an out...he suffered his first loss at the Major League level in over two years last Saturday in Baltimore, hitting a man and then committing a pair of throwing errors that ultimately led to the O s plating the tie-breaking run in a 3-2, 10-inning contest. AN EVENTFUL Duffy had three stints in the Major Leagues with the Royals last season, also pitching at Omaha (AAA) and Northwest Arkansas (AA)...he began his rehab from Tommy John surgery on May 26...he shuttled back and forth between the Naturals and Omaha due to the Triple-A All-Star break, making 14 appearances (12 starts), with his official rehab stint ending on June 25 when he was optioned to Omaha...Duffy compiled a 3-0 mark at Triple-A, posting 59 strikeouts over 53.0 IP...he had his 2012 season cut short after suffering an elbow injury in his May 13 start in Chicago. VS. CENTRAL--Duffy is 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA over 16 appearances (13 starts) vs. A.L. Central opponents (28 ER in 78.2 IP), defeating each rival once. VS.
