Red Sox vs. Royals Last night s series-opening triumph gave the Royals a 3-1 lead in the season series after going 2-1 in The K back in June..these clubs have played 468 times since 1969, with each team winning 234 contests...kc is all-time at Fenway. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 6/19 KC W, 4-2 Hammel Boyer 27,992 6/20 KC L, 3-8 Sale Strahm 25,983 6/21 KC W, 6-4 Soria Scott 30,826 Bos W, 4-2 Vargas Porcello 37,321 Bos Bos LONG BALL BACKS VARGY--Sal Perez and Mike Moustakas provided the thump and Jason Vargas returned to his winning ways as the Royals secured their ninth straight win with a 4-2 victory in the series opener over the Red Sox last night...the win matched KC s longest winning streak of a season ago (August 14-23) and kept the Royals two behind the division leading Indians, who won their eighth straight last night, while expanding the lead for the second Wild Card spot to two games, only a half-game behind the Red Sox for the top spot...perez opened the scoring with a windshield shattering blast over the Green Monster, his 21st roundtripper of the year, then Moustakas clubbed his 30th blast in the fourth on the last of a 9-pitch battle with Rick Porcello...that was more than enough for Vargas, who won for league-lead tying 13th time and first since June 30, working 6.0 innings allowing five hits and a run with two walks and two K s...a quartet of relievers allowed just one run over the final 3.0 innings, with Kelvin Herrera finishing up for his 22nd save. INSIDE THE STREAK--Kansas City s current 9-game winning streak is the longest since the club won nine in a row last August a win tonight would give the Royals their longest stretch of consecutive wins since June 7-18, the only frustration that has occurred during this streak is that KC started it three games out in the A.L. Central, but enter tonight two games removed since Cleveland has won its last eight contests...the Royals were in third place at the time the skein began, 1 1/2 games in back of Minnesota, but have flipped that to a 4-game edge over the Twins...Kansas City has outscored the opposition during the streak, while out-homering opponents by a 20-2 count...the Royals have hit.316 as a unit, including a.444 mark with runners in scoring position (32-for-72)...not to be outdone, the pitching staff has a 2.65 ERA during the streak, while holding opposing hitters to a.236 average, while the pen has shined with a 0.75 ERA, allowing three earned runs in 36.0 innings. MOOOOOOOOSE!!!--Mike Moustakas capped a 9-pitch at bat against Rick Porcello with his 30th home run of the year last night, extending KC s lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning...honing in on the club record of 36 by Steve Balboni during the 1985 season, 30 home runs to this point translate to 48 over the remainder of the campaign... he s the fastest Royal ever to 30 blasts, well ahead of Gary Gaetti s pace from 1995 when he clubbed his 30th in the 117th game and 410th at bat...last night was KC s 101st game and Moose s 364th AB...Moustakas has hit the second most home runs in the Majors this year trailing only A.L. leader Aaron Judge and the N.L. s Giancarlo Stanton. PEN STREAK SNAPPED--Kansas City s bullpen was finally solved for an earned run when the Red Sox plated a seventh inning tally against Mike Minor, snapping the streak at 30.1 innings...despite that tally, in the last 12 games, Royals relievers have worked 49.1 innings in which they ve posted a 1.82 ERA, allowing 10 earned runs...kc has an American League best 1.91 bullpen ERA in July. NEXT STOP BALTIMORE--The Royals will closeout this 9-game journey with a 3-game stop in Camden Yards beginning Monday night...kansas City swept a 3-game set in Kauffman Stadium in May, but will be looking to snap a 4-game slide in Baltimore including being swept there last season. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch.
