RAY MATTER Last night s loss dropped the Rays to 85-67, one game shy of matching their high-water mark of the season the Rays are 14-4 since the start of September, best winning pct. in the majors this month they are 23-6 (.793) since Aug 19, best in the majors, and (.643) since the All-Star break, 3rd-best in the majors behind the A s and Red Sox. The Rays would need a win tonight to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time in over a month, since Aug at BOS. The Rays are in their last nine series and in their last 13 series, with the only loss in the last 13 series coming at Boston. The Rays would need to go 5-5 or better in the remaining 10 games for their sixth 90-win campaign in 11 seasons as the Rays. Any combination of four Oakland wins or Rays losses will eliminate the club from postseason contention the Rays are on pace for 91 wins, and since the second Wild Card was introduced in 2012 the only team to win that many games and miss the postseason is the 2013 Rangers (91, lost tiebreaker game against the Rays). This is the fourth consecutive season the Rays will finish with a losing record on the road they were.500 or better in each of the five seasons ( ) before this stretch this is the fifth game of a 7-game road trip to Texas (3-0) and Toronto (0-1). ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM Last night the Rays lost in walk-off fashion for the eighth time this season, first since Brian Dozier hit a walk-off grand slam on July 15 at MIN, the last game before the All-Star break the Rays led, 8-2, in the middle of the 9th inning and allowed 7 runs in the bottom half for a 9-8 loss it was their largest blown lead in a loss since Aug 9, 2013 at LAD (led 6-0 through 5 innings, lost 7-6), and it was the largest blown 9th-inning lead in a loss in franchise history they blew 5-run leads in the 9th on June 30, 2016 vs. DET and June 5, 2007 at TOR. Last night the Rays led 8-6 with 2 outs and the bases empty in the 9th inning and lost in the span of the next four pitches: a 1-0 single, first-pitch, game-tying homer by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and firstpitch, walk-off homer by Justin Smoak it was the second time in franchise history the Rays lost on back-to-back homers, following Aug 26, 2016 at HOU, hit by Carlos Correa and Evan Gattis. Last night s 9th inning was the fourth time this season the Rays allowed at least 7 runs in a frame (last Sep 5 at TOR, 7-run 1st inning) and it was the third time they allowed at least 3 HR in a frame (3 HR on June 20 at HOU, 6th inn.; 3 HR on May 13 at BAL, 2nd inn.). 7-ELEVEN The Rays have clinched a winning record for the first time since 2013 (92-71), and for the first time under fourth-year Manager Kevin Cash this is the club s seventh winning season, all coming in a span of 11 seasons since becoming the Rays they are one of only seven teams in the majors with seven winning seasons since 2008, along with the Yankees (11), Dodgers (10), Red Sox (8), Cardinals (8), Giants (7) and Rangers (7) the Nationals (77-76) and Angels (75-78), each with six winning seasons since 2008, have a chance to join this group since 2008, the Rays hold a (.530) record, 6th-best in the majors behind the Yankees (.566), Dodgers (.556), Cardinals (.553), Red Sox (.549) and Angels (.531).
