He is three short of the record, held by Jed Morris and Mike Duncan. 2. Michael Pritchard, who is hitting.291, is looking to join DJ Belfonte and Josh Scheffert in becoming the only NU freshmen to hit over.300 since Nebraska has posted a.976 fielding percentage, ranking 23rd nationally. The school record is.975. Preview: One of the longest rivalies from the old Big Eight Conference will come to an end this week when Nebraska and Missouri meet at Hawks Field. Such has been the case in the past, there is a lot at stake in the final series between the two programs, as the Huskers and Tigers are both jostling for position in the Big 12 Conference race. Nebraska needs a sweep to qualify for next week s conference tournament, while Missouri is currently in sixth place in the league standings and attempting to hold off Texas Tech, Kansas State, Kansas and Nebraska to claim one of eight spots in the 2011 Phillips Big 12 Baseball Championship. 3 Nebraska Baseball 2011 Weekly Release #22 Page 3 May 17, 2011 Huskers.com Tech in those season-ending meetings. Although Nebraska has dropped its last four Big 12 series, three of those opponents currently make up the top three in the conference standings (Texas A&M, Texas and Oklahoma). The Huskers will be looking to get back on track against a Tiger squad that started slow, but has been hot late with four straight Big 12 series wins. Nebraska will be looking for continued solid production from Michael Pritchard, who has started six of the past seven games as NU s leadoff hitter. The freshman from Omaha, Neb., is the hottest hitting Husker entering this week, going 12-for-24 over the last seven contests while raising his batting average 91 points to.291. While Pritchard has been the young spark to the Huskers, a pair of All-Big 12 caliber upperclassmen are looking to end strong regular seasons. Cody Asche had a pair of doubles last Friday at Texas A&M to increase his Big 12-leading total to 23 and move him into fifth with Justin Cowen (2000) on the NU single-season list. The junior from O Fallon, Mo., also leads the conference in home runs (12), total bases (121) and slugging percentage (.621), while ranking second in RBIs (53). Senior Casey Hauptman has also made his way into the school record books this season as his eight saves are the sixth-most in program history, his 14 career stops ranks fourth. The Omaha, Neb., native is 6-2 with the Big 12 s fourth-best ERA (1.77). He leads the nation in walks allowed per nine innings at Hauptman s only three walks this season have been intentional. On the mound, freshman Logan Ehlers (1-3, 4.26) and sophomore Tyler Niederklein (7-3, 4.26) will start the first two games for the second straight weekend. Saturday s starter has not been determined. 4 Nebraska Baseball 2011 Weekly Release #22 Page 4 May 17, 2011 Huskers.com Scouting Missouri Missouri is coming off a key Big 12 series win over Texas Tech last weekend in Columbia. Like Nebraska, the Tigers are attempting to secure a spot in next week s Big 12 Championship during the last week of the regular season. Missouri is led by 17th-year head coach Tim Jamieson, who has guided the Tigers to eight NCAA Tournaments. Senior Jonah Schmidt leads MU at the plate with a.314 average that ranks 15th in the Big 12 Conference. He also leads the Tigers with six home runs and 27 RBIs. Schmidt s six homerlead is shared with Blake Brown, who is hitting.278, the Tigers third-highest average behind Brannon Champagne s.293 mark. Missouri ranks last in the Big 12 in overall team batting average at.260, but has hit better in league play to rank seventh at.259. Left handed senior Phil McCormick has been the top hurler, coming out of the bullpen to produce a 6-2 record with a 3.27 ERA that is 15th in the league. Right hander Matt Stites holds the second-best ERA at 3.54 and is 3-5 in 13 starts. Stites will start aginst the Huskers on Friday. Missouri will start right hander Eric Anderson (2-0, 5.12) in the series opener and left hander Rob Zastryzny (2-4, 4.17) in the series finale. The Tigers were picked to finish last in the Big 12 Conference by the league coaches but sit seventh heading into this weekend. Missouri has been one of the hottest teams as of late, winning four straight Big 12 series, including an upset of Texas A&M. Series History: The Tigers lead the all-time series with the Huskers in one of the Huskers oldest rivalries. Nebraska s last series win over Missouri was a three-game sweep in Columbia during the 2006 campaign. The two teams first met in Team Comparison Huskers Category Tigers 52 Games Batting Average Runs/Game Hits/Game Home Runs Stolen Bases ERA Innings Runs Allowed/Game Strikeouts Walks Hits Allowed/Game Errors Fielding Percentage.967 Last Time Out: Huskers Fall to Aggies, 5-1 It was a game of inches for the Nebraska baseball team, as the Huskers could not take advantage of scoring opportunities in the early frames and a three-run Texas A&M sixth proved costly in a 5-1 loss Sunday afternoon. Krey Bratsen and Matt Juengel drove in two runs each, while Brandon Parrent tossed 4.2 innings of one-hit relief for the Aggies, who need one win over Texas this weekend to clinch a share of the Big 12 title. Parrent (2-1) came up big for the Aggies in the fifth, getting Texas A&M out of a jam when it was clinging to a 2-1 lead. A pair of Nebraska hits sandwiched around a fielder choice ended the day for TAMU starter Derrick Handley and brought the left-hander out of the bullpen. Parrent walked Byran Peters on four pitches to load the bases, as the Huskers had the heart of their lineup coming up. The lefty settled down and got Cody Asche to strike out on a 1-2 pitch before Kash Kalkowski ripped a liner up the middle which was snagged by a diving Andrew Collazo behind second to end the threat. The Huskers got up early, pushing a run across against Hadley in the top of the first. Freshman Michael Pritchard continued his hot hitting with a leadoff single before eventually coming around to score on a passed ball against Kevin Gonzalez. Pritchard paced Nebraska with a 2-for-3 afternoon. Texas A&M came right back, pushing across runs in each of the first two frames against Nebraska starter Jon Keller to take a 2-1 lead. The Huskers had chances to pull even in both the third and fifth innings, but Kalkowski was unlucky on both occasions. In the third, a one-out double by Peters and an intentional walk to Asche put the Huskers in a prime spot. With a full count, Kalkowski ripped a Hadley offering down the left field line that was foul by a whisker. On the next pitch, the sophomore hit a smash that Aggie shortstop Kenny Jackson snared, beginning an inning-ending double play. Nebraska was unable to draw closer, getting only one baserunner on in the final three innings against Parrent, who finished by retiring the final eight Huskers in order. The 15 student-athletes broke the previous mark of 10 set in 2009 and established a new program record for the second time in the three years. The nine first-team selections marks the fourth consecutive year that Nebraska has ranked among the top three schools in first-team honorees. The first-team selections included Cody Asche, Cory Burleson, Casey Hauptman, Zach Hirsch, Kale Kiser, Tom Lemke, Tyler Niederklein, Matt Freeman and Eric Rose. In addition to the first-team honorees, six Huskers gained second-team accolades, including Chase Adams, Kurt Farmer, Josh Scheffert, Khris Tate, Patric Tolentino and Dylan Vogt. Nebraska s school record 15 selections raised the Husker baseball team s all-time academic All-Big 12 total 84 dating back to Leading Off Nebraska s series against Missouri will conclude the Huskers 32-game home schedule. NU is this season at Hawks Field, with seven of those losses coming to ranked opponents. Nebraska is all-time at Hawks Field. This is the 10th season at the ballpark, which is nationally-recognized as one of the best in collegiate baseball. Nebraska currently ranks 28th nationally in attendance with 2,357 fans per game. Nebraska is 16-5 all-time when ending the regular seasonending series at Hawks Field. Each of the past two years, the Huskers have concluded the season with sweeps (Baylor in 2009; Texas Tech in 2010), but did not advance to the Big 12 Championship. This week s Nebraska-Missouri series is the first Thursday- Friday-Saturday series since the Huskers hosted Texas on Eastern weekend in Kale Kiser has reached base in 23 straight games, setting a team-best mark for the 2011 season. Michael Pritchard is hitting.500 (12-for-24) over the past 10 games and has produced a.474 average in the last two Big 12 series against league leaders Texas and Texas A&M. Pritchard hit.455 in College Station last weekend, while Chad Christensen hit.333. Cody Asche went just 2-for-9 at Texas A&M last weekend, but those two hits were doubles on Friday night that moved him to fifth on the NU single-season doubles chart with 23. Asche is now tied with Justin Cowen (2002) and is three short of the school record of 26 held by Jed Morris (2002) and Mike Duncan (1985). Three Huskers - all sophomores - have started all 52 games this season in first baseman Kurt Farmer, shortstop Chad Christensen and second baseman Bryan Peters. Six Huskers have at least 10 multiple hit games this season, led by Cody Asche with 20. Kurt Farmer has 16 multiple hit games, followed by Kash Kalkowski (15), Chad Christensen (14), Bryan Peters (12) and Kale Kiser (11). Nebraska ranks in a tie for second in the Big 12 in team fielding percentage at.976, falling only behind Texas at.980. NU has only had multiple errors six times in the past 42 games. The infield, anchored by sophomores Chad Christensen (SS) and Bryan Peters (2B), has led NU in turning 26 groundball double plays. Hauptman s ERA ranks fourth in the league, while he is also third in saves (8). On April 3 against Oklahoma State, he went 6.1 innings to pick up the win in the longest relief outing by a Husker since His most impressive statistic is walks allowed, where he ranks first nationally by allowing just 0.44 walks per nine innings. A native of Grand Island, Neb., Kalkowski sat out last season following shoulder surgery. A two-way prep standout, Kalkowski was orginally expected to have a primary pitching role for the Huskers until two shoulder surgeries in 2009 and Farmer Finds His Groove in Sophomore Season First baseman Kurt Farmer played in only 15 games last year, but quickly developed into one of Nebraska s best bats. The Columbus, Neb., native is hitting.287 and is one of three Huskers to have started all 52 games. The week of March 14-20, Farmer helped lead Nebraska to a 4-1 mark by hitting.435 (10-for-23) with a team-best 12 RBIs. Peters walk-off homer in the sereis finale was the first by a Husker since Craig Corriston gave NU a 4-2 victory over Oklahoma on March 21, Josh Scheffert followed suit two weeks later when he provided a walk-off infield single against Northern Colorado to complete a 5-4 comeback victory. 17 Nebraska Baseball 2011 Weekly Release #22 Page 17 May 17, 2011 Huskers.com vs. Missouri 2010 Season Recaps Missouri Won, 3-0 Game 1 (Missouri 2, Nebraska 0): On a night where Michael Mariot was sharp, Missouri s Nick Tepesch was superb, tossing a five-hit shutout in a 5-0 Tiger win on Friday. Tepesch fired the first complete-game effort of his career and struck out nine in handing the Huskers their first shutout of the year. Nebraska received a fine start from junior Michael Mariot, who allowed two runs on six hits over seven plus innings. Mariot, who has worked into the seventh in his last 11 outings, has allowed three runs or less in five of his eight conference starts. Aaron Senne provided nearly all of the offense for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 with a homer and scored both of Missouri s runs. Eric Garcia s fourth-inning sacrifice fly got the Tigers on the scoreboard before Senne s solo homer in the sixth extended the margin. Nebraska had its best chance in the fifth, as one-out singles from Kale Kiser, Cody Asche and Josh Scheffert loaded the bases, but Tepesch got out of the jam by getting Cade Thompson to ground into an inning-ending double play. Game 2 (Missouri 12, Nebraska 7): Missouri took advantage of Nebraska s misfortunes, topping the Huskers, 12-7, in soggy conditions Saturday. The Tigers took advantage of a season-high 12 walks by Husker pitchers and capitalized on a pair of costly firstinning miscues that put Missouri ahead to stay. Jesse Santo went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, as his two-run single in the third highlighted a fiverun inning that gave the Tigers an 8-2 margin. Brett Nicholas also drove in two runs, while four Tigers enjoyed multi-hit nights. Phil McCormick picked up the win in relief, tossing 0.1 innings and getting Missouri out of a jam in the fifth after the Huskers pulled to within 8-5. Cody Asche and Tyler Farst each had two hits and two RBIs for Nebraska. Game 3 (Missouri 6, Nebraska 5): Nebraska nearly overcame a five-run deficit, but the Huskers comeback fell short in a 6-5 setback. Trailing 5-1 in the eighth, Cory Burleson s three-run homer - his first of the season - made it a 6-4 game before the Huskers nearly pulled out the game in the ninth. After loading the bases with two outs in the ninth, Brad Buehler hit Josh Scheffert to pull the Huskers within a run, but Burleson, who had two hits and drove in career-high three runs, struck out to end the game. The Huskers out-hit Missouri, 10-7, but the Tigers made the most of their opportunities, getting three of their hits in a five-run seventh to break open a 1-1 game. Jonah Schmidt and Connor Mach drove in two runs apiece, as Mach s two-run double off of Sean Yost was the back breaker in the seventh.
