2 CRUSADEROATH The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed a Student-Athlete Oath for the academic and athletic year. The oath outlines the expectations accepted by all UMHB Student-Athletes and also details the pride those studentathletes feel to be a part of Cru Athletics. Student-athletes began using the oath for the first time in the fall of 2009 and it became a prominent and permanent part of the UMHB Student- Athlete experience. 4 COACHSHIPP Ben Shipp returned to head baseball coach in May of 2012 after spending the previous 18 years as Vice-President for Athletics and guided the Cru to a overall record and the team s first ASC Tournament berth in three years. Shipp has guided the Cru to seven overall conference tournament berths in his career (three HOT Tournaments and four ASC Tournaments). He is in five years in his second stint as UMHB s head baseball coach. UMHB has also earned back-to-back Team Academic Excellence Awards from the American Baseball Coaches Association. Shipp became the first full-time athletic director at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in December of Coach Shipp had been serving as the school s athletic director since June of 1995, while also serving as the head coach of the Cru baseball team. His promotion to full-time athletic director status coincided with the University s decision to make the transition to NCAA Division III status. Not only did Shipp oversee that successful transition, he also saw the UMHB athletic department grow with the addition of football, women s soccer, and women s golf. UMHB now competes in a total of 12 varsity sports. He was promoted to Vice President for Athletics in August of Shipp served on the NCAA Division III Baseball National Committee from and was Chairman of that committee from He oversaw the change of the tournament from a traiditional eight-team bracket to pool play leading to a two-of-three Championship Round. Under Shipp s guidance as Vice-President for Athletics, UMHB won 27 conference championships, had 130 All-Americans and 38 Academic All-Americans. Coach Shipp was also the Crusaders head baseball coach from He coached UMHB to a record in that time, and Coach Shipp is the winningest head coach in UMHB history, with a current record of Coach Shipp also coached the Crusaders to a runner-up finish at the 1992 NAIA World Series and coached two NAIA All-Americans in that time as well. UMHB also won the Heart of Texas Conference championship in Coach Shipp is a 1980 graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, where he was a three-year letterman for the Crusaders baseball team. Coach Shipp coached on the high school level at Cameron Yoe High School and Calhoun High School in Port Lavaca before returning to his alma mater in Coach Shipp is married to the former Donna Hacker. They have two sons, Kyle, and Nate. Kyle was a four-year letterman and starting catcher for the Cru baseball team and also spent time as an assistant baseball coach at UMHB. Kyle returned to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant in Nate is a graduate of Southwestern University, where he was a four-year letterman for the Pirates baseball team. He now serves as an assistant coach at UMHB. Ben and Donna also have two grandchildren. 4 CRUBASEBALL 4
5 ASSISTANTCOACHES Nate Shipp - Assistant Coach Nate Shipp was promoted to full-time assistant coach in June of 2014 after spending the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at UMHB. The Cru went in his two seasons as a graduate assistant and advanced to the ASC Championship Tournament in both of those campaigns. Shipp graduated from Southwestern University with a degree in kinesiology in May of 2012 and was a four-year letterman for the Pirates baseball team. He was a two-time All-SCAC selection at Southwestern University and also earned a spot on the SCAC Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll. Shipp spent one year at Tarleton State University before transferring to Southwestern. Nate is a native of Belton and is the son of Cru head coach Ben Shipp. He and his wife, Taylor, were married in July of Kyle Shipp - Volunteer Assistant Coach Kyle Shipp returns to the Cru as a volunteer assistant coach after taking a few years off from coaching. This is Shipp s second stint as assistant coach for the Cru. He started his coaching career at Southwestern University in Georgetown where he worked with the Pirate catchers and also served as the team s hitting coach during his last two seasons. Southwestern had catchers lead the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in runners caught stealing twice in the last five years under his direction. Shipp is a 2007 graduate of UMHB and was a four-year letterman for the Cru baseball program. He was a four-year starter at catcher and a three-time American Southwest Conference Academic All-Conference selection. Shipp earned UMHB Male Senior Athlete of the Year honors in the spring of 2007 and was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He also won the Fred Jacoby Award, presented by the ASC and representing leadership, sportsmanship and academic excellence. Kyle and his wife, Tiffany, have two children. 5 CRUBASEBALL 5

Caleb is studying sport management at UMHB and wants to work for a professional baseball organization. He was an all-district catcher at Fort Worth Christian School, where he was also an all-district selection in football and a state champion in the 4x400. Caleb was also named academic all-state and participated in National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Roddy and Barbara Davis. Casey is a sport management major at UMHB. He was a two-time all-state baseball player at Salado High School, where he was also named Area MVP twice. Casey was also an academic all-state selection and member of National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Brooke and Vickie Frazier. Trevis is a pre-physical therapy major at UMHB. He was a two-time all-district baseball player at East View High School, where he was also named Most Valuable Player. Trevis was also a two-time academic all-district selection and golden arm recipient. He is the son of Dee and Donnay Green. 9 CRURETURNERS #17 MAX CONWAY JUNIOR, CATCHER, R/R, HOUSTON, TEXAS 2017: Missed the season due to injury. 2016: First Team All-ASC played in 34 games with 28 starts hit.317 on the year with 32 hits and nine extra-base knocks scored 16 runs and drove in 14 more added 187 putouts and 38 assists with just five errors. 2015: Played in 22 games with 16 starts batted.250 with 11 hits added six runs and batted in seven totaled 16 bases with 90 putouts and 19 assists caught 11 base-stealers. Max is a sport management major at UMHB and wants to be a physician s assistant after graduation. He was an all-district baseball player at The Woodlands High School. Max also played with the Challenger Baseball Organization. He is the son of Dan and Laura Conway. Jackson is majoring in accounting and marketing at UMHB. He played baseball and basketball at Crosby High School, where he was an academic all-district selection. Jackson also participated in Yearbook, Theater and Loud Crowd. He is the son of Jacob and Jennifer Godoy. Josh is studying accounting at UMHB and wants to own his own business or make senior partner for a big accounting firm. He played baseball and football at Tomball High School where he was a member of the 2013 State Championship Baseball Team. Josh was also an academic all-district selection in both sports and participated in National Honor Society, Student Council, Chorale, Tech Theater and FCA. He played one year of college baseball at Louisiana Tech University and is the son of Kevin and Melissa Horton. He played football and baseball at Giddings High School where he was named all-district and all-state. Dakota also earned academic all-district honors and participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, LEO Club and Student Council. He is the son of Dakota Best. Austin is a pre-physical therapy major at UMHB. He played baseball and ran track at Champion High School where he earned four varsity letters. Austin also earned all-district honors in both sports. He is the son of Craig and Amy Blanford. He played baseball, basketball, football and track at Riesel High School. Landon earned all-state honors in basketball, all-district honors in football and was a threetime all-district honoree in baseball. He also participated in FCA and FFA. Mark is an exercise physiology major at UMHB and wants to be a coach after graduation. He participated in football, baseball and bowling at Steele High School. Mark earned all-state honors in baseball and all-area honors in football. He was also a national qualifier in bowling and earned academic all-district honors in both football and baseball. Mark also participated in Ping Pong Club. He is the son of Thom and Reba Frankhouser. He played baseball and football at The Woodlands High School where he was a two-time all-district selection and earned four academic letters. Evan is the son of Ken and Tammy Samoff. He played baseball at Northland Christian School where he was a two-time all-district selection, member of National Honor Society and Presidents All-A Honor Roll. Ross played his first year of collegiate baseball at Centenary. #37 KODY RAMON SOPHOMORE, OUTFIELDER, R/R, FLORESVILLE, TEXAS Kody is a criminal justice major at UMHB and hopes to become a Texas Ranger or United States Marshal. He played football and baseball at East Central High School, where he was twice named Top Outfielder and also earned all-district honors. Kody played one year of collegiate baseball at Richland College and is the son of Bill and Angie Ramon. 15 CRUBASEBALL 15
16 CRUNEWCOMERS #35 HARRISON SIMS SOPHOMORE, PITCHER, R/R, STOWELL, TEXAS Harrison is studying physical therapy at UMHB. He played baseball, basketball and football at Legacy Christian Academy where he was a three-time baseball all-district selection and two-time basketball all-district honoree. Harrison also earned all-state honors in baseball and participated in FCA. He is the son of Michael and Rebeckah Sims. #32 SAM WHEATLEY SOPHOMORE, CATCHER, R/R, KINGWOOD, TEXAS Sam is an exercise physiology major at UMHB. He played baseball at Kingwood High School, where he was an all-star game participant and academic all-district selection. Sam also participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. 17 CRUNEWCOMERS #39 HAYDEN BALL FRESHMAN, PITCHER, L/L, TAYLOR, TEXAS Hayden is a nursing major at UMHB. He participated in baseball, basketball, football and track at Thrall High School, where he earned eight varisty letters. Hayden was a three-time all-district selection in baseball and was also named all-state. He was a member of the homecoming court, Junior Class Officer and participated in NHS and FCA. Hayden is the son of Jason and Stephanie Ball. #24 MALEK BOLIN FRESHMAN, INFIELDER, R/R, FORT WORTH, TEXAS Malek is a mechanical engineering major at UMHB. He played baseball and basketball at Chisholm Trail High School, where he was a two-time all-district selection, two-time academic all-district honoree and academic all-state recipient. Malek was also a member of National Honor Society. He is the son of Chris Bolin and Lesley Barrett. 17 CRUBASEBALL 17
18 CRUNEWCOMERS #38 DAWSON DELKS FRESHMAN,PITCHER, R/R, CEDAR PARK, TEXAS Dawson is studying physical therapy at UMHB. He played baseball, basketball and football at Cedar Park High School, where he earned six varsity letters. Dawson was an all-conference honoree in baseball. He was also named academic all-state. Dawson was a member of the Key Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Gary and Monica Delks. #7 GARRETT GONZALES FRESHMAN, PITCHER, L/R, SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS Garrett is a sport management major at UMHB. He played baseball at James Madison High School, where he was a two-time all-american, three-time San Antonio allstar game participant, all-district pitcher, infielder, and all-area code team selection. 29 UMHBADMINISTRATION DR. RANDY O REAR, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Randy O Rear became the 22nd president of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor when he assumed the office on June 1, O Rear was named President and CEO of the university in a unanimous decision by the school s Board of Trustees in September Dr. O Rear is the first of president of UMHB who is also an alumnus of the university. He graduated from UMHB with a bachelor s degree in business administration in 1988 and earned an MBA from UMHB in O Rear earned a doctoral degree in Higher Education from Baylor University in O Rear has served at UMHB since 1988, most recently as executive vice president and chief operating officer. For more than 18 years, O Rear has been actively involved in fundraising for the university. Under his leadership, gifts and grants dramatically increased, numerous endowed scholarships were established and major capital projects were completed, including the construction of the Parker Academic Center, the Mayborn Campus Center and the new Meyer Christian Studies Center. O Rear has also strong ties to the UMHB athletic department. He was also a two-year letterman for the UMHB baseball program as a right-handed pitcher. O Rear held the school record for wins in a season for five years before that mark was broken in He also spent one year as a student assistant coach and two years as a full-time assistant coach for the Cru baseball team. Originally from Waco, O Rear is a graduate of Robinson High School. He and his wife, Julie, have three children, Ryan, Taylor and Reed. They live in Belton and are members of First Baptist Church, Belton, where O Rear serves as deacon. RANDY MANN, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS Randy Mann was promoted to Vice President for Athletics in May of 2012 after serving as fulltime Associate Athletic Director for four years. He spent the previous eight years serving as head men s golf coach and associate AD. Coach Mann guided the Cru to the American Southwest Conference championship in 2008 and closed out his coaching career by guiding the Cru to the first NCAA Division III National Tournament berth in the program s history. Mann also led the Cru to ASC championships in 2005 and The first conference championship was the first conference title in the history of the UMHB men s golf program. The Crusaders never finished lower than fourth in the ASC Tournament during Mann s tenure in Belton. The Crusaders also narrowly missed earning the first NCAA Division III National Championship berth in the program s history in the spring of 2004, although Dillon Gooch qualified as an individual to become the first UMHB men s golfer to compete in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Coach Mann came to UMHB from Temple High School, where he spent the seven years as head coach of the boys and girls golf teams. Coach Mann spent a total of 19 years teaching and coaching in the Temple Independent School District. He took the Temple boys golf team to 4 district titles and 2 district runner-ups finishes in his 7 years as coach. In that same time, Coach Mann took the girls team to 3 district titles and 3 district runner-up finishes. The teams only missed the regional tournament once each during Coach Mann s tenure. Randy Mann is a 1980 graduate of Tarleton State University in Stephenville, and he received his master s degree from Tarleton in He and his wife, Caroline, have three sons, Mitchell, Michael, and Marshall. 29 CRUBASEBALL 29
