Danny Duffy was stellar in his first relief appearance of the year, working 4.0 innings giving up only two singles, while fanning six to record his first professional save...the win kept Kansas City s lead in the A.L. Central at 11 games, while the Royals lead over Toronto for best record in the league stands at 1 1/2 games. MAGIC NUMBER AT THREE--Kansas City s magic number to clinch the American League Central dropped to three after Sunday s business, as the Royals were winners in Detroit, while the Twins took the series finale at home from the Angels...with 13 games remaining, any combination of three Royals wins or Minnesota losses will give the Royals their first-ever A.L. Central crown...kc s last division title was the 1985 Western Division squad that went and eventually won KC s lone World Series championship...the 11-game lead is largest margin in the Majors, while the Magic Number of three makes the Royals the closest to clinching club in the league...meanwhile, Kansas City is 1 1/2 games up on the Blue Jays for the best record in the American League and home field in the postseason. RECORD SETTING DAY FOR K --The wintertime addition of Kendrys Morales has been a boon to the offense all season, but on Sunday he had a day that had never been seen in franchise history...with a club record tying three home runs and a triple, Morales established a team standard for total bases in a game with 15, one more than George Brett had on May 28, 1979, vs. Baltimore in a 16-inning affair...kendrys was also the seventh player since 1900 to have three homers and a triple in the same contest joining Les Bell (Boston, 1928), Tony Lazzeri (New York Yankees, 1936), Pat Seerey (Cleveland, 1945), Wes Westrum (New York Giants, 1950), Fred Lynn (Boston, 1975) and Ryan Braun (Milwaukee, 2012)...the 15 total bases tied Yoenis Cespedes for the most in a game this year, with Cespedes accomplishing the feat on August 21 in Coors Field...the multi-homer effort was the 14th of Morales career, first of the 3-homer variety and first by a Royal since Danny Tartabull on July 6, A TRIO IN THE 20-HOME RUN CLUB--Kendry Morales hit his 19th, 20th and 21st home runs of the season on Sunday to join Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas in KC s 20-homer club in it marks the ninth time Kansas City had at least three players reach the 20-homer plateau in the same season, the first time since 2002 when Carlos Beltran (29), Raul Ibanez and Mike Sweeney (21)...the Royals need Lorenzo Cain (16) or Eric Hosmer (15) to get hot over the final 13 games to have four with 20 roundtrippers, which would be the third time in team annals, first since 1987 (Danny Tartabull-34, Steve Balboni-24 and George Brett/Bo Jackson-22). ADD DUFF TO THE SAVE LIST--Lost but far from forgotten in all of Sunday s offense was a strong relief performance from Danny Duffy, who made his seventh career relief appearance, first of this year, and contributed 4.0 shutout innings allowing only two hits while fanning six to earn the save...he became the 143rd pitcher in franchise history to post a rescue. SERIES WORK--Kansas City s 1-2 stop in Detroit dropped the Royals to 0-4 with a split in their last five series played, all coming in the month of September in which the club has gone just prior to this dry spell KC had an 8-series unbeaten streak, going 7-0 with a split...the Royals are still in their last 22 sets...on the year the Royals are with six splits in the 49 series played...since June 7, when KC trailed the Twins by a game, the club has gone for a 12-game flip in the standings...only the Blue Jays have won more games since that date in the American League (58-34).
