Last night was already the second game this season in which four Cubs had at least three hits the team also turned the trick May 9 vs. Miami (Almora, Contreras, Russell and Rizzo). WHOA, WE RE HALFWAY ONE-THIRD OF THE WAY THERE : Chicago last night played its 54th game of the season, exactly one-third of its 162 game schedule at 31-23, the team is on pace for 93 wins after going last season the team has recorded 186 extra-base hits and is on pace for 558 that would play out to the second-most for the franchise in a single-season, surpassed by the 2004 club and its 572 extra-base hits. With 470 strikeouts thus far, Cubs pitchers on pace to tally 1,410, which would be their fourth-highest single-season mark (1,441 in 2016, 1,439 in 2017 and 1,431 in 2015). LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN: Chicago last night plated three seventh-inning runs, and this season has scored 46 runs in the seventh frame, its most productive inning this season in fact, the 46 runs in the seventh inning lead the N.L. and are tied for the most in the majors with the Astros. The Cubs have plated seventh-inning runs in four of the first five games on the current trip, scoring nine runs total. Chicago has now scored 103 runs between the seventh and ninth innings this season, tied for the N.L. lead with Atlanta and third in the majors (Houston, 109). WALK IN THE PARK: Chicago has drawn 118 walks in its last 24 games since May 6, good for an average of 4.9 free passes per game prior to this stretch, the Cubs averaged 1.6 walks per game in 11 contests from April 24-May 5 (18 walks total). Chicago s 213 free passes this season are tied with Washington for most in the N.L., and are tied for second in the majors (Yankees, 218). FEAST OR FAMINE: The Cubs this season are hitting.315 (349-for-1,109) with 234 runs scored in their 31 wins (7.5 runs per game), while posting a 2.48 team ERA (77 ER/280.0 IP) in the team s 23 setbacks, the club has posted a.199 average (161-for-808) with 50 runs scored (2.2 runs per game) Cubs pitching has a 4.40 ERA (104 ER/212.2 IP) in those setbacks. NEW YORK STATE OF MIND: Albert Almora Jr. has reached safely in each of his last 12 games against the Mets dating to June 30, 2016 he s batted.563 (18-for-32) with three doubles, a triple, a homer and nine RBI during his 12-game run against the Mets. Anthony Rizzo has reached safely in his last nine games against the Mets dating to July 20, 2016 he is batting.333 (12-for-36) with five homers, 11 RBI, nine runs and seven walks in that span. BAT MEN: Chiago has averaged 5.8 runs per game in its last 25 contests since May 5, batting.290 (263-for-906) with 51 doubles, eight triples, 34 homers, 142 RBI, 120 walks, a.375 OBP and a.477 slugging mark this follows a stretch in which the Cubs scored three or fewer runs in nine-straight games, April 25-May 4. Omitting that nine-game stretch, in which the Cubs totaled just 18 runs, Chicago has averaged 5.9 runs in its other 45 games (266 runs scored). WHAT S THE DIFF?: Chicago leads the National League with a run differential of +85, ahead of Atlanta s +62 the Cubs 284 runs scored are second in the N.L., trailing only Atlanta (286), while their 199 runs allowed are second-fewest in the National League, trailing only Washington (197). PUTTING THE BALL IN PLAY: Cubs batters rank third in the N.L. in plate appearances per strikeout (4.95), trailing only Pittsburgh (5.18) and Atlanta (5.04) among N.L. clubs, the Cubs ranked 10th in 2017 in PA/SO (4.48) were sixth in 2016 (4.73) and last in 2015 (4.08). Tommy La Stella has gone 27-straight plate appearances without a strikeout dating to May 8, the fourth-longest active streak in the majors. THIS PEN IS BULLISH: The Cubs bullpen owns a 2.72 season ERA (61 ER/202.0 IP) that ranks third among major league bullpens behind Milwaukee (2.45) and Arizona (2.59). Chicago s relievers have posted a.201 opponent batting average (146-for-725) and a.594 opponent OPS, both the best marks in the majors.
